I’d probably just go this route... reuse your old case, power supply, and hard drive.

Since the APU doesn't have its own dedicated VRAM, it pulls from the system RAM. It craves higher frequencies, so this setup hits a decent sweet spot. If you can swing it, honestly, just grab 8GB of RAM right out of the gate.

So why even bother coming here to spam if you spent forever asking for advice?
What’s the point of this thread anyway?

You spent your money, whatever... You picked up a decent enough card, just enjoy it and move on.

Adam Moore3 said:I haven't been following every detail, but from what I can gather, you paid $633 for an R9 280? If that's the case, yeah, you got ripped off. No cap, just being real with you.

Man, prices have spiked everywhere, so there probably wasn't a better deal out there.
If he'd actually pulled the trigger two weeks ago when he was supposed to, then we could talk about whether it was a good move or not.

He can talk all he wants, but it won't matter when he's running a junk power supply 🍿

Good. Better off without them.😁
Budget gaming build under $600? in Desktops ·

Look, at Rolling Stone, the prices are all the same regardless of how you play it.

And for $1333 you end up with this:

Mind if I head over to NYC for a second?😁
Look, you really need to aim for $3,500-$3,600 for the base PC price. If you go up to 400-$167 you're just paying more than what it would cost cash.

Where are you based?

Mark Price said:Can someone recommend a gaming build for under $1.25? No peripherals needed.

I want Intel/Nvidia and an SSD. I'm paying with an Amex, so ideally everything comes from one retailer.

Thanks in advance 🙂.

With that much cash, you can forget about a gaming rig with those specs 😁.
Go with AMD or find more money.
Used PC builds: What are they worth? in Desktops ·
Adam Moore3 said:Why is everyone obsessed with pairing an APU with a dedicated GPU in custom builds? It makes zero sense.

Maybe as a safety net. That’s how I’d play it—grab a discrete card for gaming so if it dies, you at least have a decent fallback.😁

mistypilot9 said:Hey, kid in my building bought a PC without a GPU because the seller kept it, so he asked for help picking one out. Since you guys helped me spec mine last week, I figured I'd ask here. 🙂

He's got an ASUS M5A97 Le R2 motherboard, AM3+, AMD 970/SB950, DDR3
It'll definitely work for gaming. He’s always over at my place playing GTA V, Assassin's Creed IV, NFS, Diablo III, and Skyrim on his Xbox, so I assume he wants to run those and maybe some newer stuff on his own rig. I don't know his CPU, but the machine he grabbed off Craigslist is about 2 years old.
If there's a card for $533 that can handle those and maybe some newer titles, that would be great... thanks.

Nothing is a guarantee here. Find out what CPU and power supply he's actually running first, otherwise you're just guessing.

I'd rather just grab a cheaper graphics card and pair it with an aftermarket cooler.
ovako nesto:

One Spira Kepler Rev.2 cooler. Fits 1156/775/FM1 sockets. Dimensions are 96.5×51×125 mm with a 92mm fan.
One XFX NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960, Double Dissipation Edition, hitting 925M Boost.

Brian Campbell36 said:RAM is never enough, and this GPU needs at least 600W. You won't miss a single kWh from your electric bill if you go bigger.

Nah, that card runs fine on a decent 500W power supply.
Anything else is overkill, especially RAM 😁. For gaming, you don't need more than that.

Brian Campbell36 said:What’s their actual lifespan? Like, what's the average?

A buddy told me they usually last about 5 years. Mine is hitting that limit soon, especially with the cat constantly messing with it. 🤦

I've got old probes from ten years ago that still work. The plates are shot, but I keep the probes for my collection. 😁

Brian Campbell36 said:I get it. I always pick the part with the better warranty.

If that's how you roll, a Gigabyte card is the way to go. You can easily bump it up to an R9 280 level.👍

The invoice hasn't even gone out yet. You can still cancel through admin and just grab 280x at Future instead. 🙂

Brian Campbell36 said:I'm dropping way too much cash on this thing to risk messing it up. Better to just hand it over to a pro and have them swap it out in five minutes.🍿

Come on, you can't be that clueless about plugging in a GPU... just watch a YouTube tutorial. You're basically throwing money down the drain paying a shop for something that simple.

So this isn't actually linked to my previous issue... which, by the way, isn't popping up now that I've switched to IE. Still, this feels more like "diagnostics" than an actual fix. I hate using IE—I'm a Firefox person through and through—but at least I have more info now. We'll see if it helps. I'll try Chrome too.

The thing is, the computer "wants" to go to this specific site on its own... it's not me doing it, it just happens while I'm browsing the forum.
Got any advice or ideas regarding that first problem? Why does it only happen when Firefox is running? What else can I try besides what's already been suggested? And... can I count on a repair shop to actually fix this, given that it only happens occasionally, maybe once a day? It's totally unpredictable, so I can't really force it to happen.

The quickest, easiest move is just a fresh install of Windows... wasting time on diagnostics like this is a total headache.

So what's the deal?
Could this be related to that "Google redirect" virus?
http://atechjourney.com/google-redir...manually.html/

That just means Google flagged the site for having a virus and they're blocking you from catching it.
