graniteharbor85 said:Do you think an R9 290 will fit comfortably in here? I’m skipping the SSD for now since it's not a huge deal—this is strictly a gaming rig anyway, and it'll be super easy to slap one in later on.

AMD FX 8300
Cooler Master Hyper 212
GIGABYTE 970A-DS3P
Crucial 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Seagate 1TB Barracuda HDD
Sapphire R9 290 4GB Tri-X GDDR5
FSP 600W 80+ Bronze
Zalman Z3 Mid Tower
Acer 23" IPS 1080p Monitor
Genius Slimstar Optical Drive
Genius Wood Speaker Set

Looks clean, but honestly? You don't need the 290 for 1080p. With the budget he's working with, he could get everything he needs and still have cash left over for an SSD.😁

jadetiger81 said:Hey everyone, I was wondering if someone could help me put together a full PC build for about $2500? I’m looking for a complete setup—everything included, like the monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, you name it...
I actually tried putting one together myself, but I'd love to get some feedback on potential changes. Ideally, I'd like to grab everything from a single online retailer (I built this list using the tools over at gov.uk)
Here is what I've got so far:
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Extreme (I was originally eyeing a Gigabyte board, but... well, you know how it goes)
CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K (honestly, I'm not sure if I even need something more powerful than this)
RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) Kingston Fury 1866MHz
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 3GB (not entirely sure if I should go with this or maybe a GeForce GTX 760)🙂
HDD: Western Digital 1TB 7200 rpm 32 MB cache
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 W (it might be overkill, plus it doesn't have an 80+ certification which worries me a bit)
Case: Zalman Z3 Plus (it looks pretty sharp, and I know the GPU will fit easily)
Monitor: AOC I2369VM, IPS, 23" wide, wled 1920x1080
Keyboard & Mouse: Logitech G Series (standard US layout)
Speakers: Logitech z313

Total: $2500🤣😵

Thanks a ton!

You could save on the board or the RAM—small savings, but still. For that money, you can definitely squeeze in an SSD

Cut costs on the speakers and the keyboard/mouse combo, and you get an SSD. Also, grab an aftermarket cooler for this. And a decent PSU with a 5-year warranty🙂

Don't expect discounts on parts. Around here, prices follow the dollar, and since the dollar strengthened, local prices shot up

Gregory Hayes87 said:What's the point of Best Buy then? I don't want to throw money away if I can't actually get my money's worth.

Your best bet would be the R9 270. It's a step up from the 265.

If you aren't chasing ultra settings or high resolutions, an R7 260X would actually hold its own.

But your CPU might end up being the bottleneck here.

Adam Moore3 said:Trading a better GPU or a bigger hard drive just to squeeze out an extra 4 GB of RAM? Honestly, probably not worth it. You can still run Grand Theft Auto V on 4 GB, and you can always just grab more RAM later when you actually have the cash. $83No point in sacrificing your GPU or even your hard drive.

I know it’s not there, but I gave him the option anyway. Not everyone goes chasing high-end specs, and nobody actually needs a 1TB hard drive. 🙂

He's got options, so let him pick.

I've got:
phenom II X4 965 3.40GHz
8gb RAM,
Fortress 550w,
and this miserable old HD4870 (can't play anything since it lacks DX11 support),
I was torn between the Sapphire R7 265 Dual-X 2GB and the R9 270 Dual-X 2GB (they're priced similarly), but now I'm reading some bug reports saying both cards are loud as hell, and people are recommending the Sapphire R7 260X 2GB OC as the better value.
What should I do?
thanks

They aren't actually that loud. If you're worried, just grab an ASUS or Gigabyte model.

Slightly over budget (skipping the monitor since nobody really uses them anymore), but the GPU is decent enough for gaming and everything else.🙂

That bolded part doesn't mean anything at all.

As for the rig, try somewhere around $1000-$400

I think I'll just hold off for a bit. Leave things as they are for now.
If I were playing heavy AAA titles, I'd probably swap out my GPU, but the games I actually care about won't even drop until late next year. That gives enough time for the next generation of 😛

In that case, just stash your cash. No reason to upgrade anything right now.

There's an XFX model for $50 cheaper, though it only carries a 2-year warranty (ASUS 3)

Fine, let him grab that NVIDIA 210 they recommended above. It's total garbage, but whatever...

It's barely an upgrade over the integrated graphics he's already running.

George Sanders37 said:Hey everyone.

I haven't kept up with new hardware in ages, so I need some advice. Should I bother upgrading my current rig or just wait? This thing was built as a gaming PC back in December 2012.

The CPU.Intel Core i5-3350P
Motherboard.Asrock s1155 Z77M motherboard.
RAM.Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz low profile, 4 GB x2.
Hard drives.WD Caviar Blue 1TB.
SSD.Intel SSD 120GB.
Graphics.MSI GTX 660 OC TF 2GB GDDR5 Twin Frozr III
opticalSamsung DVDRW Drive
Power supply.OCZ Silencer MKIII 500W modular.
The case.Silverstone Precision PS05B.

The biggest wins here would be the GPU and maybe more RAM. Does adding another 2x 4GB sticks actually make sense? From what I can tell, the board has two PCI-E x16 slots, but only the primary one is 3.0—the second one is just 2.0. The manual says it supports ATI Crossfire, though it doesn't say anything about NVIDIA SLI.🤔I've always been pretty clueless when it comes to graphics cards. Honestly, I'm a total amateur in that department. 😛

If you've got a better idea, just say it. I'm all ears. 😁

Yeah, I'll eventually upgrade the GPU. Thinking about an AMD Radeon R9 280 or 290.
The rest is fine.
Gill01's Corner in Desktops ·
The 290 series is the move.
Targeting the 970 series makes sense if you're looking at Nvidia, but compared to the Radeon 290? It’s a bad deal. You aren't getting much more power for the massive price jump.

Timothy Kim60 said:Try to push for this one if you can. It’s probably a top 3 best-buy for price-to-performance, and honestly, nothing significantly more expensive than a 750Ti is actually stronger

EDIT

Looks like it's out of stock at Best Buy, but check Protus or Discount24

Signature: this is a solid midrange card. It’ll hold up for a while if you stick to medium settings🙂

Anything that doesn't come from an official site is risky business here. 😁

I’ve basically learned everything there is to know about PC components and building rigs from this guy. He really walks you through the entire process—from start to finish—showing exactly where everything goes without all those annoying jump cuts or edited-out bits. If you need a guide, I highly recommend 👍

I've checked out his channel a few times, but I can't stomach sitting through ninety minutes of his videos.

Too long, too slow. 🍿
