Gaming PC build - around $1,200 budget in Desktops ·
The cold hard truth is:
Thanks for the tip, but I'm definitely going with the McClovinov/the new guy suggestion. Probably won't happen until the week after next, though, since I need to clear some debt at Chase first just so they'll approve my personal loan. As for the noise on the R290, I'm planning to grab an extra fan later, so I don't think the sound will be a dealbreaker. Plus, $100 look, I have to factor in everything—that 10% interest the bank is gonna hit me with, plus probably paying some notary fee at a local office. Buying on credit is always the most expensive way to go, we all know that, but when you're broke like me... you just pay up.
Anyway, I'll let you know once I pull the trigger, assuming nothing goes sideways. I don't think anything will, since my wife gave me the green light 😍, provided I buy her some boots for $267. Every cloud has a silver lining, I guess.😁
Later

Just grab an Nvidia card with some non-reference cooling, like a GTX 770. If you ask me, it's the best bang for your buck. It beats a 760 but sits below a GTX 780, though personally, I don't think that performance jump justifies the price hike.

Same as I said before, if you want new, stick to what I already told you.
If you aren't going that route, you're just gonna end up stuck with whatever you pick up later.

If you're hell-bent on buying used, then look at something like this:

Based on what I dug up online, I wouldn't bother trying anything beefier than this...
And even this is pushing it.

It’s not because your power supply or RAM is lacking; it’s just that your processor is too weak to handle the load.

Larry Ortiz5 said:Henry Campbell4, you interested in an i5 750, an ASRock H55M-LE, and a Corsair cooler?

I’ve never overclocked this i5 750; it's run at stock speeds my whole life. I picked up the ASRock board last year, and I'll throw in the Corsair CPU cooler for free if you want it. Hit me up via DM if you're interested. I'm out in Chicago. You'd see a decent jump in performance if you switched over to this setup..

And again, you're just getting an old socket. That motherboard is junk—you won't be able to overclock it at all...

wiredlynx10 said:I was thinking about grabbing another power supply just to run the GPU off the old 350W one while the new one handles the motherboard. Just bridge the power and ground pins... if a second PSU is even necessary.

That’s not how it works. 🙂

I'm no overclocking expert. Honestly, I don't get that stuff. 🤷

So just grab a new GPU and call it a day? Still need to deal with RAM too?

Isn't that old Phenom build loud as hell?

If you're getting a card, just go for a GTX 650TI boost

about $367

Grab an aftermarket cooler too, then you can overclock that CPU 🙂

What's your budget looking like?

I've got an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX (512 MB) that still works fine, but modern games won't even run. Thinking about putting some money into this
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6700, 2400 MHz (12 x 200) 4 GB RAM System Memory: 3584 MB (DDR2 SDRAM) thx

What's your budget?
And what kind of power supply are you running?

crimsonstag84 said:Yeah... say you grab a Radeon R9 270X, $500, it performs about like an HD 7950. You'll be fine for a few years with that.

For sure.

At this rate, you might as well just buy a 1000W power supply too. ☕

Brian Campbell36 said:Can some expert explain how CF works to me?

Right now I'm running this card: PCI-E NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650, 1GB DDR5, HDMI, DVI, 2xDP, HDTV

I'm a bit confused because I see there's a slightly better version in the same series;
PCI-E NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 flex GHz edition

Could I pair this flex card with my current one (or does everything have to be an exact match, like flex with flex or edition with edition for CF)?

I don't want to waste money buying the flex if it won't work alongside my existing edition card.

You can pair them just fine, just make sure your power supply can actually handle it.

briskmarlin20 said:I'm looking to pick up a new GPU. I want to go all out and grab something top-tier, but since we're talking serious money here, I don't want to screw this up. Here’s my current setup:
ASRock Z68 PRO3 with an MBO soc1155.
i7-2600K CPU.
16GB of RAM paired with an EVGA 600 W1.
And my current card is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570.

I've decided to go all out, so now I'm weighing my options between...
NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan
NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan
What's your recommendation, and do I actually need to swap out my power supply?

If that card still runs, you're basically throwing money away. It can still handle most games on high settings—some even hit ultra.
Upgrading isn't worth the money.

Andrew Fox74 said:My GPU just died (NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX). I’ve got an offer on a 4890—it's a Sapphire Musashi model, so it runs ice cold—for... $100I could grab a 7850 with a warranty for about $150, or maybe find a 6970—not sure if that one’s even covered. $300What should I get? 😁
I've got the cash for any card, but I can't bring myself to waste it on this. Honestly, even an NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX would probably handle basically everything for me.
The rest of my build is a Phenom II X6 clocked at 3.5, 16GB of RAM, an EVGA 600 W1, and I'm running everything at 720p.

Definitely go with the 7850, especially since we're talking about a garage setup. 🙂 Make sure you grab both the warranty info and the receipt too. 🙂

No way. You'll be lucky if it even stays running normally.😁

Susan Anderson77 said:Dankesn, thanks for the links. It’s actually not even that pricey.

I haven't tried the I-4 yet. I checked that "Can You Run It" site, and everything looks fine except for the GPU.
And I can't even tell what my FPS is. I fire up BF3 and it stutters a bit, but it claims I'm getting 8 FPS, which is impossible—there's no way it would even launch at that speed. Something is broken with the FPS counter; it just won't read correctly. Whether I set it to high or low, the gameplay feels basically the same. I watched some BF3 footage on YouTube from someone with the exact same rig, and they were pulling 30+ FPS easily. I'm definitely not hitting those numbers. No clue why.

Also, I don't have 1600 MHz; I'm running 1366.

The whole deal with an APU is the RAM. It's physical memory—think of it like fuel—and the higher the clock speed, the better. You want at least 1600MHz... higher frequency equals better performance.

Mark Anderson90 said:I'd throw down some cash if it meant getting a decent propeller.🙂

Just checked her site—minimum memory requirement is 2GB.
So, you're saying it won't run with just 1GB of RAM?

Check out this Gigabyte board: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/pro...px?pid=3331#ov

Can I pull that 1GB RAM stick out of my laptop?

No way. It’s too small and won't even fit the slot in a desktop.

Timothy Kim60 thanks, I'll grab that power supply.
This case looks even better to me . I'd pick that one if I could, just worried about whether everything fits—matching those motherboard slots to the case layout.
Thanks 😁

Just make sure your card is PCI-E and not AGP 🙂

x2

maybe something like this.

Total's around $400-$900 (didn't do the math exactly), which means there's nothing left for a GPU. I'm thinking about just picking up a better card later. Better than blowing cash now on stuff that won't work.

There's zero graphics here. How do you expect to see anything?
