That Dell they're offering you isn't bad either, but honestly, if you have any choice at all, just pick something else from the stock or look for something in hand.

Otherwise, the MSI Z77 Gaming Series is your best bet; I’d specifically hunt for those if they can get them in.

I have a few questions for you. How did you manage to overclock the CPU without bumping up the memory voltage?🙂 How much did you actually raise the voltage on the RAM slots? Come on, tell mellowtiger83—this is a forum, after all—you aren't seriously suggesting you fried a memory slot by accident, are you?🙂🙂🙂🙂 It was probably a smart move on your part to reset the BIOS to default settings so the folks over at Links wouldn't catch on.

And that power supply in your build... what kind of nonsense is that? Why? For what purpose? You could have easily bought a high-end CPU and overclocked it like a gentleman instead of burning through motherboard slots from $567

ASRock isn't garbage.🙂 First off, the Z77 is a top-tier chipset. Since they don't make many boards in this specific price bracket for this socket anymore, you’ll likely either get a refund for the difference or they'll offer something from their current lineup to make up for it.

From what I can gather, you don't even have a processor yet, so there's really no reason to go hunting for some overpriced flagship board. You just need Crossfire support, and that's really it. Besides, looking at your example, a price tag of $567 is hardly a guarantee that the board will actually function properly.

How on earth did you manage to fry a memory slot? As far as I'm aware, if they find out you were overclocking, your warranty is effectively void.

It won't be a total disaster for you. They’ll likely swap in a Z77 chipset instead. As far as I can see, Micro Center has the best selection available right now. By the way, the LGA 1150 socket is actually newer than 1155, which is why they're pushing it. It might seem counterintuitive since the number is lower, but 1150 is the more recent socket.

crimsonstag84 said:It seems they’ve completely pulled the plug on 1155 motherboards. You just can't find them anywhere anymore. 😬

Some kind of compensation? For instance, maybe a 240GB or 250GB SSD if they don't pay out the rest of the balance. I am not entirely sure how that mechanism actually works.

The S1155 motherboards are available everywhere, and there is a massive selection out there. I have no idea where you got that information from. If you look at the link provided, there are plenty of models currently in stock. In this specific situation, they’ll likely just offer a replacement board—probably not even the exact same one, but some other model from a different manufacturer with similar or slightly lower value, provided there is proper compensation involved.

I just checked the link. Right now, they only have one entry-level model listed, so they’ll definitely need to pull some stock from a supplier, which I'm sure they have on hand.

Hey,

I've got some of that sitting in stock if anyone's looking for it.🙂🙂

Definitely go with this one.

I'd aim for $317.

Well, you’ll need to head into the BIOS and locate the option for enabling dual graphics—it should be listed as enable dual graphics, off, on, or something similar.

To access the BIOS, just tap the Delete key on your keyboard right after you power up the machine, which works in most cases. Just don't forget to save your changes before you exit.

David Sanders4 said:That’s exactly how I calculated it—using Exelon's rates, factoring in peak and off-peak hours. But there is another variable to consider. Take gaming, for instance. When the GPU is running at full load, the CPU isn't even hitting half capacity; it all depends on the card. We're looking at a daily difference of maybe 20 or 25 cents. That adds up to about $2.50 a month, or roughly $30 a year. So, if you're running an AMD build, you might just skip one coffee a month 🤣

Out of everyone here, you should listen to The New Guy most of all—the captain, Data.

I'm dedicating this song to him as a small token of appreciation for everything he's done for the folks on this forum.

Do pay close attention to the brand of ship keyboards (touch screen), of course.😉

redmason12 said:It's basically this: my current card doesn't support DirectX 11, and since I want to play some newer titles, I'm looking to pick up a new one with a budget around $500.
My build is:
Intel Core 2 duo E8400 3.0 GHz Gigabyte EP35-DS3R 2
Gigabyte EP35-DS3R
2x Kingmax 2GB DDR2 400 MHz
Radeon hd 4850 512 mb Chieftec Smart 550 w
Chieftec Smart 550 w

I was considering maybe grabbing a Radeon R9 280 or an R9 270. There's about a $100 difference in price, so would the R9 280 be worth the extra money? Or perhaps an NVIDIA card is better for a similar price point? Will my current power supply handle a Radeon card? Also, does it even make sense to put a better GPU in this setup, or should I just swap out the CPU and motherboard instead?
Since I am a complete novice with this stuff, I would appreciate any help.

Your specs are decent enough. If I were in your shoes, I'd grab an R7 260 x and overclock the processor slightly; everything should work fine then. That R9 series is definitely overkill for your rig. As someone else mentioned, the CPU simply won't keep up, so you'd essentially be throwing money away.

If you aren't interested in buying new, look for a used gtx 460, or maybe a 560ti, 5870, 7850, 7770, or 7790. Grab a Q6600 or some other quad-core from the LGA 775 era and you'll see a massive improvement.

You should be able to run those DirectX 11 games on the 4850 using DX10 mode, at least.

Oh, I forgot to mention—hold onto that Gigabyte P35.🙂 It is a legendary motherboard.

Trying to overclock an Intel Core i7 is just pointless, but hey, go ahead if you must!!! Using those kinds of graphics cards for gaming... honestly, they'll just end up with a massive electricity bill from the utility company. On the bright side, maybe he can take the radiator out of the room during the winter since the PC will act as a space heater—just pop the side panel off the Cooler Master Case.

When I really think about it, it’s not a bad deal. You pay more for power, sure, but you save on gas or firewood.

Trying to overclock an Intel Core i7 is just a fool's errand, but hey, if you want to go down that rabbit hole, be my guest!!! With those kinds of graphics cards, you might actually get some decent gaming performance, though you'll certainly see a spike in your utility bill. On the bright side, you could probably ditch the space heater in your room during the winter since the rig will act as a furnace—just take off the side panel of the Cooler Master Case.

Thinking about it more, it isn't a bad trade-off. You pay more for electricity, sure, but you save on heating costs.

Just put it on the table. Airflow is perfect if you just open a window, short the power pins with a screwdriver, and everything works fine.

Forget the case.🙂

Your GPU memory hit 100% capacity. I ran into the exact same issue back when I was running an old Radeon 4870. Honestly, it’s just what happens when you push the overclocking a bit too hard.

Here is my current setup:

Motherboard: Gigabyte 35-ds3r
CPU: Core2duo e6750 @ 2.66GHz—honestly, it could handle much more than this.
RAM: 4GB DDR2 800 (2x1GB Ocz Platinum + 2GB Patriot)
GPU: MSI Cyclone GTS 450 1GB GDDR5
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 320GB SATA2
PSU: LC-Power LC8500TX 500W
Case: Chiftec Big Tower

I am looking for $433. Is this a fair deal? I won't go a cent over $1,200.

We are talking about an active athlete here—someone whose body is conditioned for extreme physical stress. Perhaps the survival odds are closer to 20%, which is still far too low. It isn't good.

The real question is what happens if he does make it into that 10-20% bracket. I wouldn't wish that kind of existence on anyone, not even someone like Michael Jordan.

Massa is living proof. And honestly, there are others too—take Berger after Imole, for instance. Then you have those who just don't seem affected at all, only to end up even more unhinged later on, like Kubica. 🙂

Get real. Fernando Alonso is done with the top tier. It's over. 👏

It’s just not right, plain and simple. One ought to maintain a sense of optimism, but I find my own reserves are starting to dwindle. It’s a peculiar sensation, really—the desire to be proven wrong. Sometimes, you actually find yourself wishing you were mistaken.
