Narantxa said:I honestly only dig 911... even if they've got some trash left in their catalog, that one track is 🙂

Eminem... I totally get why you and her would hate them... When I first heard them about 12 or 13 years back, it was like a total epiphany. I just stood there, stunned by this sudden wave of clarity, mouth wide open, thinking: Queen! Honestly, out of everything from that era, I think 911 is the one band that actually leans into that raw Queen sound (even though you can definitely hear influences from bands like The Clash or Police in there too).

My Malevich just glued over your Mondrian and swiped all those white and black squares... 😁

Kevin Chavez3 said:Basically, you're just talking nonsense today. 999 are kings of the universe? Glass is just some naked kid? The Smiths are conditionally hiccuping? Siouxsie and Joy Division are boring? Are you intentionally hitting every single sacred cow just to stir the pot, stormyviper11? You punk, no way! 😬

Nah, it's actually worse: I mean all of this seriously. 😬
The only thing you took out of context was the bit about Glass; I said they were decent compared to Sexe and early SCH, not that they're legendary in general...
To me, they're a solid band, but nothing mind-blowing. Maybe it's just a generational gap, or maybe I just haven't seen them live...

And I don't agree with Alex Scott22's nominations either, because personally, I might even think Billy Idol and Tina Turner are slightly better solo than in their main bands—mostly because those original bands never really did much for me anyway.

But seriously, what's wrong with 999? For me, along with Sham 69 and The Mekons, they’re probably part of the holy trinity of bands that Dinko first introduced me to...

Susan Clark10 said:@ stormyviper11: what's the deal with the Smiths? they're actually pretty accessible, definitely not the most obscure indie band on this list 🙂

The Smiths are just okay to me. They've got some good moments, sure, but honestly, they bore me after a while.
I lumped them in with the Sisters, which might be a stretch—they’re better than them, but they just never really clicked for me...
I'm not gonna go out of my way to blast The Smiths, but they'll fit fine if I catch them in an 80s retrospective somewhere between FGTH, Billy Idol, and Neno...

Nowadays, there's a whole younger crowd that absolutely loses it over them... like, if someone plays Teenage Kicks out at a club in New York City, they’ve got instant legendary status 🙂

There was this countdown recently on some station in New York City—think NPR or something—where they picked the top 100 songs of all time. It was just the usual heavy hitters, you know? Stairway to Heaven, I Will Always Love You, Smells Like Teen Spirit, blah, blah, blah... And way down near the bottom, sitting at like number ninety-something, was Teenage Kicks. Honestly, I don't even know if I should be happy about that or not... And as for the Undertones, most people vibing to that track probably haven't even heard Here comes The Summer ili When saturday comes, not that I want to get too deep into it. Maybe they've heard Fergala a good Heart as a solo thing... 😁

By the way, is that actually the worst solo hit ever from a member of a legit cult band?

Let's settle this once and for all:

Regarding New Order / Joy Division—honestly, who’s actually better than whom? I haven't a clue. But let's be real, neither of them ranks higher than "conditionally listenable."
Looking at that +/- list we talked about, the only two bands that actually hit the mark are on the minus side (Cure and Bauhaus). The Smiths and Sisters are somewhere between "passable" and "occasionally interesting," while Sju and ĐD are just boooooring...
Blue Orchestra is better than Colonia. Not by a landslide, but they still take it. And yeah, better than Ljupka too.
Those November tracks are just as pointless as the Why glass stuff. A total middle finger to Sexi or those early SCH records.

And finally, 999 aren't some semi-obscure London band from 1976. They're more like those "almost made it to the top" legends. Even that random CD I have from around 1990 sounds decent, but everything from the late seventies and early eighties is basically the holy grail...

Mott the Hoople is a decent band. That’s all I’m saying. All The Young Dudes is easily their best work, and honestly, I’m worried the rest of their stuff is just going to leave you feeling let down.

Now, if we're talking about classic Thin Lizzy, those first four or five albums? They're way more than just a "decent band."

I’m not sure I buy the idea that music itself can sound "dated." Sure, it might be tied to a specific era and fail to vibe with what’s happening today, but that's different. In that sense, I get where people are coming from regarding The Doors and Cream, and honestly, I think there were plenty of much more interesting bands out there at the time. It doesn't mean they suck, it just means they aren't really my thing anymore, though I won't exactly change the station if they come on the radio. If anything, The Doors just irritate me more because of how obsessive their fanbase gets. Still, they had some solid blues tracks I'll always be down to hear...

Regarding Bauhaus sounding "old"... well, I didn't really catch that. I love them mostly for those two or three-note piano lines, and somehow minimalism feels more timeless than other genres to me.

Kevin Chavez3, I don't see why the lack of originality in certain classic bands would actually be a letdown??? If you ask me, 99% of the music we listen to and love is unoriginal—and usually, that’s exactly why we love it.

Man, I am really laying into people today...

Alex Scott22 said:Is "democracy" actually just a fancy word for being stupid?... 🙂

Democracy? I actually found this one killer line from Bukowski: "The difference between a democracy and a dictatorship is that in a democracy, people get to vote first and then follow orders, whereas in a dictatorship, nobody even wastes their breath on voting..." 😁

We want democracy!
Give me a dictatorship any day!
We want freedom!
Bring on the censorship!
Let’s go mainstream!
We need an alternative!
Man, I am seriously craving some Nabisco cookies right now... specifically those wafer ones. Just thinking about them...
Spot the imposter... I slipped one in there because getting five stars for everything else was driving me nuts, and honestly, it's the only thing on this list that actually fits my vibe—so I made sure I got exactly what I wanted!...😬

NP Sound Lab - A total forgotten gem. Man, I really should’ve fought harder to get them on that list...

Why does everyone start talking about "the youth" the second someone mentions anything alternative?
Because it’s just such a stupid term... 🙂
Personal Top Lists & Rankings in Music ·
Alternative to what exactly? Pop music, the mainstream scene, high society...?
Or does "alternative" just mean anything that isn't a radio hit?
If we’re talking about how stuff spreads through the US—thematically, structurally, even stylistically—then those first two albums by Punkert definitely fall under the alternative label. Especially considering how much the band members barely knew how to play their instruments back then...
Take Idol, for example. They aren't an alternative band per se, but "Idol - Defense" definitely is. It was experimental musically, and socially, because of its leanings toward traditionalism, which was a massive middle finger to the ruling ideology at the time.
And obviously, the most important part—what kind of alternative list is it without Bulldozer? They fit every single criterion, probably more so than bands like Hladno Pivo or Mother's Milk...
Basically, it's all just noise...

5. Tuljan (back when my old man went to Scandinavia a few years back, I basically begged him to bring me a plushie octopus—first he lost his mind thinking I was crazy for wanting stuffed animals in my twenties, but he ended up getting it for me anyway... honestly looks freaking realistic and it's still the best plushie I've ever seen, let alone owned)

There are some really cute plush octopuses for sale at this toy shop down in the basement of an important gallery. They’re actually spotted, so I’m assuming they’re supposed to be sea leopards or something, but the tag clearly says octopus.

Don't get the wrong idea, though—collecting stuffed animals isn't exactly my main hobby or anything. But I have a niece 😍 who is absolutely obsessed with plushies. Guess who her absolute favorite one is... 😳 And yeah, being the obsessive guy that I am, I can spend hours scouring shops for the perfect one. I've gotten smarter about it now, though; I don't wait for a special occasion anymore. If I see something cool, I just grab it and save it for whenever it's time to give a gift...

Kevin Chavez3 said:For me, "that thing for that thing" usually just means a bottle opener, but I tried to pretend I actually have other interests in life. 😬

Ugh. And here I was hoping it was some subtle tribute to "Wishes, Greetings, and Regards" by Rocker from Morava.

It’s always awkward when you just blurt out total nonsense because your brain freezes up. Like that time I ran into Ari peka at Times Square back in '88... The guy asks me where on earth I'm from, and my mind just goes completely blank...
It went down like this, if you need the stage directions:
stormyviper11 (thinking hard, neurons firing, brain cells screaming, but nothing comes up...) : From... From... From the Netherlands!
apn (eyes bulging out like two plates full of dumplings) : Excuse me?
stormyviper11 (turning a deeper shade of red by the second) : No, wait, not Dutch, it's... It's... Where is Budapest?
apn (acting like a wise old owl) : In Canada.
stormyviper11 (with the sheer relief of Al Bundy finally grabbing the couch and the remote) : Oh, right. From Canada.

Later that same night, Ari peka jumped straight out a sixth-story window, and I heard the most beautifully articulated swear word of my entire life, but that's a whole different story...

Up. 🙂 🙂

What’s actually worse... slander or just straight-up lying? I mean, they both feel pretty dirty, but there's a nuance there that people usually miss when they're busy throwing shade online...
Honestly, we just vibe with Bruce Springsteen way more... he’s just got that soul, you know?
