The same goes for universities.
Education should be accessible to anyone who actually wants it.

Honestly, with the way resources and staffing are right now, there's just no way this is doable. Doesn't matter what state you're in, really. ☕

Sarah James4 said:The government sets the education system... right now we have a system based on what I described... streaming kids at age 15... now they want to do it at 10 or 11... I'm not against streaming itself... some people will always grasp concepts faster than others... but applying these methods so rigidly...🤷
I don't think this is something unique to Rhode Island; plenty of European countries work the same way... and they're trying to change it too... there's documented criticism of these systems... many Eastern European and former Soviet republics are in the same boat...

The solution is becoming obvious: equal educational opportunities for everyone... extending general education until age 17... then letting kids focus on their own interests and market needs... countries like Singapore use similar systems... technical colleges or universities... depending on ability and demand.

But what's wrong with having some career guidance in high school? 🙂

Man, I really wonder who came up with these "new" criteria and which "experts" they were actually consulting. The fact that athletes get extra points for any high school application, while artists only get credit if they're applying to an arts academy, pretty much shows—and honestly, we’ve known this for ages—how the government views "important" extracurriculars... I mean, sure, I'm down with the idea of entrance exams for high school, or maybe just weighting certain subjects more heavily depending on the school. Middle school should be general ed, obviously, but let's face it—most kids aren't interested in every single subject, and not everyone is a genius at everything. We shouldn't treat that like it's some kind of failure. I don't think middle school should just be about cramming "essential" info—you know, that whole "general knowledge" thing—into kids' heads. It should be about helping them figure out who they are and encouraging their actual interests so they can kill it once they move into a specialized track that actually fits them... And don't even get me started on how subjective teachers are when grading—it's such a mess, and grades aren't even a good predictor of success anyway. Honestly, if you ever read one of those official handbooks from the Department of Education... Well, based on what I've gathered from chatting with a few people who actually work there, I'm pretty sure they can't even read—well, not "with comprehension," at least in the academic sense—so nothing of 😁
What have we learned from movies? in Movies ·
I've learned that you should basically always do the exact opposite of what movie characters do if you want to actually survive. Like, for instance—NEVER go check out that weird creaking sound coming from the basement, the garage, the attic, or somewhere deep in the woods. 🙂
Always make sure the doors and windows are locked tight. Keep your phone charged at all times. Don't let random strangers into your house or car. And maybe... don't just leave massive kitchen knives or axes lying around everywhere.
Ear Piercing Advice? in Health ·
I didn't see anything about this in the search bar, so sorry if I missed it... But honestly, I've tried getting my ears pierced at least three times now, and every single time, something goes wrong. When I was a kid, I took my earrings out way too early and the holes just closed up. Then, the second time, I tried wearing some cheap-ass jewelry—like, before the two-week mark—and they got super inflamed. The third time, I even went for titanium, and they still ended up swelling up... So, I guess I'm looking for your experiences—is there any point in trying a fourth time? Or if they get irritated once, is it just going to happen every single time? Maybe I should try a different metal or something.. 🤷
Casablanca in Movies ·
Honestly, I found the movie a bit of a slog. 🙄
I've just never been big on those sappy, sentimental types of romances, so...

Somehow I’m getting lumped back into those weird generalizations again
about women... 🙄
It’s not even like I have an issue with long movies,
if I don't bail in the first 15 minutes, I'm usually sticking it out until the end. 🙂

nimbleviper75 said:Ladies, does everyone actually have a best friend?

I don't know what the deal is, but in my 20-plus years, I haven't managed to land a single best friend. I had one back in elementary school, but she just decided one day that we weren't hanging out anymore. She never even told me why.

Then there was another towards the end of grade school, but that friendship fell apart after I told her that her boyfriend kissed me—on the cheek, mind you, and without me wanting him to!

And then another one in middle school who basically just phased me out of her life.

I'm not a drama seeker. I'm loyal, I can keep a secret, I'm a great listener, I would literally give any of them a kidney, and I actually have a sense of humor. None of those three people above had a legitimate reason to stop being friends with me (I stand by that 100%). Maybe I just bored them or something, I don't know. Or maybe I'm just looking for friends in all the wrong places. Ugh, I get the dilemmas men face. What is it that women actually want?!

I am totally willing to work on my flaws, but I honestly can't figure out where I went wrong. The only thing I can think of that might have hurt a friendship is that I'm relatively guarded. But is that really enough to ruin a whole friendship?
Am I messing up somewhere else? Or is "best friendship" just a myth and we've all been lied to?

Please, don't turn this into some "girls' night" chat. I'm looking for some more serious answers here.
Men are more than welcome to weigh in too.

I was actually thinking about this the other day too... Honestly, any time I've
tried to get close with another woman, things just kind of blow up and leave me feeling let down.
It makes me think women are just... I don't know, really complicated and sneaky creatures...
And hey, I'm one of them, I guess... Must be some testosterone imbalance or something😛
