Aaron Barrett79 said:And what happens when some hack decides they need to reboot an entire cinematic universe instead of just one single movie, like how J. J. Abrams tends to do? And then, naturally, they just mess it all up. 😲
It’s pretty bad, honestly. He’s basically my number one nemesis in the film industry.
I honestly feel like a reboot should only happen if technology has advanced enough to actually justify a redo, or if the original was just a great idea trapped in a poorly made movie. Personally, I’d only ever consider remaking action flicks—the kind that live and die by their choreography, visual spectacle, and pure kinetic energy. As for dramas, if the original was solid, you should just leave it alone. It really all comes down to the specific movie in question.
Remaking heavy hitters like Apocalypse Now or Citizen Kane would be pointless, and frankly, it's a bad move for sci-fi or action classics like Alien, Predator, or Mad Max. Some films are just perfect exactly as they are; you can't just manufacture that specific atmosphere again. Even if you have better visuals or flashy new effects, it doesn't mean much if the soul isn't there, and most of those attempts end up being mediocre at best.
At the end of the day, I'm generally against reboots because, for me, the story is everything. If I've already experienced the narrative, I don't see the point in watching it again just to see different actors or shinier CGI.
It’s a good film. Tom Hardy has been one of my favorite actors to watch lately, and he really knocked it out of the park here. The movie itself is quite well-constructed; I’ve always had a soft spot for films driven by heavy dialogue. It manages to pack so much into such a tight timeframe without feeling overly cryptic or hidden. That ending was perfect—honestly, any other conclusion wouldn't have made sense. It’s just a raw slice of life about a man who made one massive mistake and, while trying to untangle himself from the shadow of a father he never really knew, ends up dismantling everything he worked so hard to build. It serves as a reminder that sometimes you just can't do everything right and please everyone, and also that the better you are at what you do, the harder people work to forgive your slip-ups.
I thought it was great, though I suspect it won't be everyone's cup of tea.

Regardless of how you look at it, the movie landed an Oscar nomination, and while I haven't kept up with the rest of the field to judge the competition, there’s a legitimate shot that Bad Grandpa pulls it off and takes home the trophy. 😁
I actually found myself laughing quite a bit, which is more than I can say for plenty of movies that claim to be "better" comedies. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you're just looking to type "prank movie" into a search bar, you aren't going to be disappointed here.
Nicholas Watson said:I’ve already sung his praises a few times now, so I won't go over the same ground just to hear myself talk. Honestly, it's definitely worth your time. Look, it’s not exactly some cinematic masterpiece, but it’s a perfectly solid, easy watch for a night in with a big bucket of popcorn. I actually had to sneak away and watch it without my wife, because she basically vetoed the whole idea the second I mentioned it. Just give the movie a shot.
So, I just went back and watched the trailer since it looked familiar. I've seen the movie, and honestly, it's pretty good. 😁
Keith Jones36 said:My own expectations were a bit different; I was looking for a mindless comedy or a lighthearted superhero spoof.
What I actually got was something completely unexpected.
It ended up being one of the best films I watched all year.
No, the thing is, based on the trailer, I actually thought it looked like it might be a genuinely good parody, rather than just the usual mindless nonsense.
Based on the >, I was expecting some kind of wild comedy or a solid superhero parody. Instead, it just felt sort of pointless. It’s not even that the movie itself is terrible, it’s just that it wasn't nearly as funny as I had hoped it would be. I definitely walked away feeling disappointed.
Same deal here; I went in expecting a laugh, and while it technically qualifies as a comedy, pretty much everything remotely funny in the whole movie was already spoiled in the trailer.
I generally try to avoid watching trailers or reading reviews before seeing a film, but even then, I still end up stumbling onto total crap sometimes.😛
Nicholas Watson said:Honestly, I don't even care about the specifics, as long as they just get him in front of the camera and finish the shoot. To be fair, even when Burton's projects miss the mark—like with Alice—I still tend to think they're pretty decent movies.
Honestly, who knows? Maybe someone will actually bring a little flair and extravagance back to this genre, instead of just relying on the same old tired tropes of decapitations and limbs flying everywhere.
I don't really get that line of thinking. It would honestly be better if he didn't make anything at all rather than putting out a bad movie. 🤷
I just hope they don't turn this into some cookie-cutter Hollywood sequel.
Burton will probably dive headfirst into the deep end and make something incredibly dark, which honestly isn't a bad move for a movie in this genre. We'll have to wait and see how it all unfolds, but I'm not exactly holding my breath for it to hit the top of the box office charts. It feels like the era for those specific horror-comedy blends might have already passed us by.
quietbison86 said:Wait, why hasn't anyone even mentioned Paris Hilton yet? Is she just totally excluded from the conversation because people don't view her as an "actress" despite everything she brings to the table? 🤣
Let's stay focused here. That woman is never going to be recognized as an actress. We're talking about the A-list elite.
Eddie Murphy is just a mediocre actor if you ask me. He seems to try and turn every single role into some variation of that cop character that made him famous, but honestly, it just doesn't work.
I’ve never really been able to get into George Clooney. I wouldn't go so far as to say he's a bad actor, but his performances always feel strangely out of place in his own movies. It’s like he takes over the screen, but not in a way that actually helps the story, and I still can't quite shake that image of him playing Batman.
I just can't stand Christopher Lambert. He feels so incredibly fake as an actor that it's almost painful to watch; I genuinely struggle to think of a single role of his that I’d even give a passing grade. You can see him trying, but it never feels convincing.
Ashton Kutcher was actually decent in "The Butterfly Effect," but everything else he's done feels pretty mindless. He strikes me as a one-dimensional actor, so I'm still scratching my head over how he managed to pull off that one good performance.
Then there's Ben Affleck. Every time the camera zooms in for a close-up and he delivers some totally unbelievable line with that blank, empty expression, I just lose it. I’m actually a little nervous to see how he's going to look in this new Batman movie.
Portland used to be on equal footing with teams like Lyon back in the day, and honestly, I don't see how they won't be again now that Lyon is showing up with their B-team—as in, literally nobody from the starting lineup they had just two weeks ago is going to be playing in Portland.
Something about this just feels off to me. Then again, Lyon’s second string is packed with decent players who are hungry to prove themselves. Still, Portland really needs to find the back of the net; it’s not a massive underdog bet at 1.30, but I have a feeling it's a pretty safe bet.
The point here is about those parasites who are only looking for a free summer vacation. This isn't about someone refusing to host good friends or a sibling... it's about people who only bother to remember you once a year. Some individuals have managed to derail the whole discussion into something else entirely.
I don't consider myself the one to set the boundaries for this topic; those have already been established over the last few years since this thread was started.
It’s not like I’ve been constantly badgering the moderators (I’ve only made about nine posts in this thread over two years—let's say eleven if we count the two that were rightfully removed)—I’ve basically just used two posts to ask the mods to ensure the conversation stays on the track it’s always been on. It isn't really my style to report every single post, so I don't do that. I just expect the moderators to actually read the threads they oversee and notice when things drift off-topic for three or four pages straight. And look, I realize nobody is expected to be on standby 24/7, but if there's a three-day stretch of pure nonsense being posted, I expect that to be handled. That’s why the role exists in the first place.
@Jacob Sullivan91 You actually took part in the debate that drifted away from the main subject yourself. I have nothing against you or the rest of the moderation team. On the contrary, I think you guys do a solid job considering the types of characters that show up on this forum, but I also believe you have an obligation to accept criticism when it's clearly justified. Honestly, it was only after I opened this thread that things actually started feeling a bit more organized here. And I don't see how I was publicly calling out the moderators. Is it because I opened a space where we can vent? I haven't mentioned anyone by their username; I simply expressed my frustration at getting a warning while others who were spamming the thread faced zero consequences or deleted posts. I couldn't care less about my own warnings or my deleted posts, but I do care when a discussion loses its way. I've seen too many interesting topics get shut down because they were diverted into something else, and I can see this one starting to slide in that direction too. Whether you let that happen or not is up to you.
The whole thread is a bit of a joke in itself, so when you read certain takes, it’s almost impossible not to throw in a snarky response just to keep things interesting. That’s honestly what makes this discussion so engaging—the way people keep poking fun at each other's posts.
I don't mind a little casual chatter or some light spamming; that's basically how most forums in the States operate. But there are a few people who have taken it way too far, filling entire pages with nonsense that has absolutely nothing to do with the actual subject matter. To be honest, I might have reported a few posts that weren't strictly off-topic, but it really rubbed me the wrong way when the moderator told me to just report them myself and then handed me a warning instead of actually doing anything about those specific posts.
They cleaned up a few things, but I don't see what this post has to do with the main topic: Right after that one, a pointless argument broke out that probably should have been deleted entirely.
And this post doesn't fit the theme either; it's just a continuation of that mindless bickering:
But there's just such a massive amount of them, honestly. I wasted half an hour trying to report twenty of them because you have to wait between each report, and there’s easily three times that many left to go.
So, here’s the deal regarding this thread: How to say no to parasites looking for a free summer vacation.
Judging by the title and the first fifty pages, this whole thing is about those guests who just force themselves on you—uninvited people who decide to crash at your place for the summer. You know the type: they suddenly remember you exist in June because they want a beach trip without opening their wallets, even though they barely even talk to you the rest of the year. It's about the people who just barge into your house or your lake cabin unannounced and expect to be catered to.
For years, this thread was actually one of the funniest spots on the site. You could read some pretty hilarious stories, or maybe vent a little and ask for advice.
But a few days ago, the vibe shifted. Now, anyone who doesn't want to host people is being labeled a sociopath. That got shut down quickly, and the posts were deleted. However, over the last couple of days, the spam has started back up. People are rambling about what kind of "good" person wants to host others versus those who supposedly don't want to welcome anyone, even going so far as to accuse people of being cold toward their own siblings. It has absolutely nothing to do with the original topic. The last four or five pages have become an absolute mess of spam, and the thread doesn't even resemble itself anymore. The people posting this stuff now are the exact same ones who were calling everyone stingy before their posts got wiped.
Personally, I’ve asked the moderators to step in a few times, but all I ended up getting was a warning. I can take the warning for going off-topic, and I don't mind my own post being removed, but I don't quite get why everyone else's posts stay up. I received a message telling me to report anything that looks like spam, so I did—I flagged about twenty posts, if not more. Nothing happened. Nothing was deleted, nobody got a warning, and the same annoying argument just keeps cluttering up what used to be an interesting discussion.
I wouldn't call myself a hardcore forum regular, and I don't usually run into trouble; I was banned once, but that was by a moderator who wasn't doing their job and was eventually removed from the position anyway. Still, I felt like I had to say something about this.
I really hope someone does something about this thread, because it would be a shame to see such great stories and interesting anecdotes go to waste. Personally, I don't take the comments I report personally—since I haven't found myself in those specific situations—but it really bothers me to see a good thread turned into a petty shouting match over something totally irrelevant.
I mean, if the topic is about coworkers showing up at your beach house with suitcases while you're too embarrassed to kick them out, then what does that have to do with people arguing about how "humanitarian" it is to invite a neighbor with a sick child to stay? Those two things aren't even in the same universe.
Anyway, I hope that makes sense. If anyone is confused, just read the beginning of the thread to see the context of how it started, and then look at the last four or five pages to see how it's gone off the rails.
