It really doesn't matter if it was an RC1, an RC2, or the actual finished product. You aren't actually modifying Google Chrome itself; you're just tweaking the extension. It isn't going to work on the final version either unless you implement exactly what I laid out for you, or unless Costas pushes an update.
restlessharbor242 said:Does this plugin actually work with version 3 (rc1)?

Yeah, it does, though you’ll have to perform a tiny little hack to make it happen.

Just download the extension manually and crack it open—since the extension is in an xpi format, it’s really just a standard archive that you can easily unzip using WinZip. Once you've got it open, you're going to find the install.rdf file, which is exactly what you need to pull up.

All your hard work involves swapping out the <em:maxVersion> tag from 2.0.0.* to 3.0.*
Basically, instead of seeing <em:maxVersion>2.0.0.*</em:maxVersion>, you want it to read <em:maxVersion>3.0.*</em:maxVersion>

And that's pretty much the whole ordeal. Just hit File > Save, refresh the archive, and toss the extension into your extensions folder, which is typically sitting right in C:\Program Files\Google Chrome or wherever else you decided to install Google Chrome.

Enjoy! 🙂

Sure thing. Just go ahead and install this add-on.
Best video players and similar software? in Software ·
Roger Miller8 said:Look at it this way:

Everything that VLC Media Player used to be—and honestly, still is—the gold standard for video players—is already covered by GOM Player.

If you actually bother to read up on it, you'll find that VLC handles even more formats than both of those mentioned above.

So, here’s the deal... GOM is lightweight, free, snappy, and incredibly versatile, whereas VLC offers even broader format support, even if I personally can't stand its user interface.

I'm with you on this one.

VLC is technically superior, but it’s an eyesore, and there are certain little things that just grate on me, like how it handles subtitle rendering and all the settings tied to them. That's exactly why GOM is sitting at the top of my list right now.
Defragging issues!!! in Software ·
You can certainly make do with the built-in tools in macOS, though you’ll find much more impressive results if you opt for heavy-duty software like O&O Defrag or something along those lines. That said, the native utility will get the job done well enough if you aren't feeling particularly ambitious.

P.S. It’s spelled defragmenting.

Guys, I need help with my media player!!!!! in Software ·
Jose Morales2 said:I don't want to clutter things up by starting a whole new thread, but I have a quick question regarding GOMplayer... does anyone know how to fix the subtitle encoding so it actually displays characters like Č and Ć correctly? Right now, it's just spitting out weird combinations like "æ" instead of the actual letters. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just right-click, head over to Preferences, then Subtitle, then Others, and set the Microsoft Code Page to North American.

Customizing ISOs with nLite in Software ·
Hmm... you talking about something akin to Microsoft? I haven't actually messed around with it myself, so I can't really speak to the specifics.
Customizing ISOs with nLite in Software ·
Just as nLite served as the gold standard for customizing Windows 2000, XP x86/x64, and 2003 x86/x64, vLite performs that exact same heavy lifting for Vista, making it an absolute necessity for anyone looking to slim down their OS.

Dom Player? in Software ·
Yeah, it’s definitely malware... he probably grabbed some sketchy file from a torrent site and now he’s being told that this specific player is the only way to watch the movie. 🙄 As if that isn't obvious. He should just wipe the whole drive and start over because there's honestly no point in trying to fix this; it's just a massive waste of time and bandwidth.
Symantec or Norton, honestly, you can't go wrong with either one since they both do the job, even if people love to argue about which is superior. That said, if you aren't looking to spend a dime, the free version of McAfee is perfectly sufficient, or you could just grab another free alternative like AVG or maybe even some other basic utility.
Can I run two antivirus programs at once? in Software ·
In short, absolutely not. You could technically go ahead and install eight different ones if you really wanted to live life on the edge, but let me tell you, it would be an absolute disaster. Even running just two antivirus programs simultaneously is enough to trigger constant software conflicts, crawl your entire OS to a grinding halt, and start nuking vital system files, so adding more is just asking for trouble.

I trust you all followed my train of thought... 😁

So, are we talking about something along the lines of Netstalker or Advanced IP Scanner?
Bradley Ramirez5 said:Does anyone know if there's an English language pack available? I went looking for it but came up empty-handed, though it's entirely possible I was just searching the wrong way. I have absolutely zero interest in using American English—wait, no, I definitely want the English version, not some other language.
(assuming I actually make the jump to Vista one of these days)

There is indeed an English language pack for both the 32-bit Ultimate and Enterprise editions of Vista, and you can grab it directly through the update page, though it’s a bit of a chunky download at about 250 MB 😕 so that should be everything you need; I haven't personally tested it since I don't actually run Vista myself. 🙂
If I’m remembering correctly, the update path is restricted to just the Ultimate and business versions, though I'm still sitting here wondering if they even bother to include the English language pack on that list.

Version 6 just won't cut it on Vista, whereas version 7 works perfectly fine. If you're running into any headaches, your best bet is to just go ahead and install the newer version 7 instead.
The X-Files Subtitles in Software ·
Ryan Hall7 said:So, I was hanging out at Best Buy today and stumbled upon the complete first two seasons of The X-Files US title with American subtitles. The catch is that I can't find any American subtitles anywhere online—it’s just a sea of foreign versions. I actually have the whole series downloaded via torrent, but I’m stuck. Is there anyone here who owns the original physical release and feels like ripping those subtitles to upload them somewhere? Because honestly, I am desperate for these specific subs.

You can find everything you need right here for all the episodes. 🙂

Best program for trimming video clips? in Software ·
analogheron112 said:I'm looking for some kind of simple, free software that can let me clip out a specific segment from a video file to create a standalone clip. I have this footage on a DVD—it was originally transferred over from a digital camcorder—and I really just want to trim off the beginning and the end, or perhaps just pull the middle section out onto its own separate disc. I’ve never actually done anything like this before and honestly have zero clue which program can handle the job, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. 🙂

Just download Handbrake, and then using the re-authoring feature, you can simply select the exact portion you want to keep. Move the main movie over to the left side, right-click the ready set go frames option to pick the specific part you want to extract, hit backup, and you're basically done—ready to burn.
