I just use a basic savings account—it’s free since I'm on that student banking plan.
I just move whatever amount I need from my checking over to savings and buy my stuff.
Once the refunds hit, I just slide the cash back into my checking account.

It doesn't say you can't curse at your mom, dad, brother, or sister... it says don't curse at your family (exaggerating, obviously).
It doesn't explicitly forbid quoting the post right above yours when you aren't even responding to it, or grabbing a post from a totally different thread... it just says don't post in a way that kills readability.

Quoting is allowed somewhere else, but not here—just like I told you.
Back in the day, this stuff wasn't such a huge issue, so now we're stuck dealing with it on a case-by-case basis.

Just think about how often you actually bother to re-read the rules of the subforum you're constantly posting in, and there's your answer as to why it isn't in the official guidelines right now. 🙂

No, like loneraven25 said—if anyone actually gets banned, it’s only after a mountain of warnings (or if someone keeps quoting posts way above theirs just to reply to a random sentence from a few pages back or some other nonsense 😁).
I can only recall one single ban for quoting, and even then, it was because they were doing that ultra-useless quoting thing and kept repeating themselves right after being warned.
To me, that’s just common sense, so there's no need to spell it out in the rulebook.

I don't know about other forums, but here at MIT, we decided it just doesn't make sense.
On the rare occasion where people jump into a thread (can't think of a single one right now), they end up killing the flow of the conversation, making the whole topic a mess to read through.
Basically, the need to quote the post immediately above yours is infinitely smaller than the need to edit a post because someone "hijacked" the thread.
And since quoting the previous post just kills readability...

Not to mention how much of a disaster that kind of quoting looks on Tapatalk, which a lot of people use to browse MIT.

If I were in your shoes, honestly? After catching a ban for "violating subforum rules," I’d probably just take a second to actually read the fine print and figure out where I tripped up.
That would give me all the answers I need, since the rules aren't exactly some massive legal manifesto or anything crazy complicated...

Look, saying "it doesn't work" is a pretty useless way to describe a problem. It’s basically impossible to figure out what's actually broken without playing a massive game of trial and error first.
If you’d actually bothered to mention which browser you’re running, what kind of extensions you've got installed, or even just how your settings are configured... then maybe someone could actually point you toward the real issue.

It’s probably just a backup site or some forum they set up for testing stuff.

Look, if you ask me, the whole point of a forum is for everyone to actually see the discussion.
It shouldn't be some gatekept thing where you have to drop a comment just to unlock the rest of the thread.
There are plenty of people out there who might not fully grasp the topic, but they still want to read up on it.

Sure, making it technically possible might work, but we'd probably just end up drowning in a sea of useless filler posts from people just trying to bypass the system.

Steven Clark2, you’ve got quite the vision there, but I really doubt that’s even doable—and honestly, I’m not sure it makes any sense either.
I mean, what are we talking about here? Manually counting posts per subforum? Trying to judge which sections are okay for heavy posting versus where people just chill? Gauging if some new guy actually intends to stick around and hit that 100-post milestone? It's a lot.

Some people just sign up to lurk and occasionally pop in to ask one question when they're confused (looking at you, Tech & Gadgets subforum, though maybe I'm wrong about the others).
But then you've got those same users with under 100 posts who end up dropping a massive tutorial or a super helpful guide that actually improves the board—like someone sharing their experience buying gear on Craigslist. There’s no reason they shouldn't have the same "rights" as everyone else just because they haven't checked some arbitrary box.

At the end of the day, these kinds of restrictions aren't practical, and frankly, they don't help anyone.
Sure, you'll run into a spammer or a bot every now and then, but if you catch them early enough, you can just wipe their few posts or DMs and move on. Easy.
