I’m thinking they might be more open to them now, especially since there's way more interest than before... So go ahead and drop your suggestion, northernangler8! 😉 @brightwolf48/">@@brightwolf48, we can bring yours back too, if you're up for it?
It’s not exactly high-brow poetry or anything... but still! There’s this striking simplicity to the lyrics. Just really direct messages that I think we can all relate to on some level. It actually hit me the other day... I used to listen to this stuff way more intensely, maybe ten years ago...
Man, that nostalgia hits hard 🕺
Sebadoh - On Fire
My opinion can change today. I'm responsible anyway. From second to third-hand information That complicates the complication.
I don't think before I speak, And I don't know how far my words reach. So wrong nearly every time That I'm sorry I speak my mind If what I said was unkind.
Now it feels like I'm on fire. It's burning the world through. Don't hold it against me 'Cause I know you're lying too.
Is there any need for apologies? There's no reason to believe me. Judgements born in my jealous mind Creeping inside outside.
Connections I've made never follow through And sooner or later disappoint you. I'll cross you twice when your back is turned. That's how I've learned That someone has got to be burned.
Now it feels like I'm on fire. These words are not the truth. Don't hold it against me 'Cause I know you're lying too.
It feels like I'm on fire It's burning the world through. Don't let me fall Without someone to hold on to. Someone to hold on to. Someone to hold on to.
I think the intro rules are pretty straightforward. Honestly, we all know the drill by now, and we definitely know what Thursdays are reserved for here... 😁 Anyway, (calling out the skydivers and the stalkers in this group!) if you're interested, feel free to drop an album suggestion—any album at all—as long as there isn't already a dedicated thread for it. Let's keep it to ten suggestions max, then we'll spin up a poll.
Right on. Yeah, the poll stays open for 24 hours. We basically just set it up as a formality so nobody can claim we're playing favorites with the album choice—we want everyone to hear what the majority actually wants!
We’ve gotten so used to the routine by now, so for us old-timers who have been here since day one, it’s honestly kind of weird how some things still seem so confusing to everyone else... 😁
Looks like I’ll have to go back and edit the intro post. I knew it would happen, but I'm already getting DMs from people asking about the topic, like they can't see what's staring them right in the face...
Look, it’s got its flaws, sure... but that whole cat-and-mouse game between Hopkins and Gosling? That’s basically the entire reason to watch this movie anyway!
Mark Cruz15 said:I’d suggest we ditch this multi-vote campaign thing in the future. Everyone just votes for their favorite group, which basically kills any chance for the underdog albums to stand a shot.
But that’s exactly how we started! And honestly, looking at how many people are actually voting right now, there's really no point in pushing for 10 different albums. The whole idea is to give everyone more options so the best ones can actually rise to the top... It's not perfect, sure, but let's not get too intense about a simple poll. Plus, I have no clue what you mean by "enemy" albums... 🙂
I mean, if we're being real, I feel like Sonic Youth is way more iconic, and John Frusciante is definitely pulling more weight popularity-wise. 🙂 Honestly, trying to guess what might actually win is just impossible... It’s wild. If Jessica Morris6 had suggested some random country singer from Tennessee this week, I wouldn't even be surprised if they beat out all these names—they actually did pretty well last time. 😬 (just look at this week's New Fossil). It’s kind of hilarious how unpredictable the voting can be, isn't it? 😁
Anyway, I won't ramble on forever! I think I already know exactly what I'm going to nominate for next week...
Casey Flores said:So, when's the actual deadline to get a thread started...?
Still nothing. We’re all still sitting here waiting for kungfuhrcak to finally start that thread for the album that dropped like, what, a week ago? I haven't the slightest clue what the hold-up is... guess we just keep waiting... 😁 I really hope you don't end up waiting too long though! Seriously, if you can make it happen soon, that would be just perfect... right around now would be the best time...
brightwolf48 said:I was totally convinced New York City was going to breeze through, so I didn't even bother voting...😵
Did any of you guys vote for someone else thinking they’d actually win? Because if you did, New York City would be sitting pretty as the album of the week right now... what a missed opportunity! ☕ It’s already hit ten voters regularly... not like we have a massive crowd or anything, but hey... progress!
I don't really mind that it didn't happen... Honestly! It’ll probably get its moment in the spotlight eventually, or maybe someone else will just step up and pitch one of them in the meantime... doesn't matter to me at all!
So, I’m just gonna throw it out there and let everyone weigh in on what we should be blasting next week... whatever happens, happens! Let's see those picks... 🙂
Three tiebreakers, three massive new albums on the horizon. We've got Frusciante, Screaming Trees, and Sonic Youth all coming our way... I'm already buzzing just thinking about it! Honestly, whoever wants to step up and kick things off can do so whenever you're ready. 👍
What if... just what if one single phone call could ripple through time, messing with both the past and the future? It’s such a wild premise, really... and the way it wraps up in this dark, gritty horror style makes you think that maybe some things are better left untouched. Just leave well enough alone, you know?...
I mean, life is already tragic enough on its own! Some things can only be delayed, while others might just spiral out of control and turn into something way worse than anything we could have ever imagined...
So, about the movie... Honestly? It was good! I walked away feeling pretty satisfied. It keeps you hooked and the concept is super intriguing, even if it didn't quite hit me with that massive "wow" factor I was looking for.
It’s just that there aren't as many famous authors or songs being covered by 😁 I was thinking about suggesting something, though, not that I actually want to... 😛
I actually didn't start digging into Lanegan until I heard his covers, then I started working my way backward 😬
But hey, it’s honestly not a bad way to go about it! I was actually thinking about suggesting the "Imitations" album around Christmas. It would be such a perfect vibe for the holidays, especially with that Nick Cave track 🙂
It’s basically a case of style over substance, honestly. It feels like he’s trying way too hard to be "deep" and "artistic," just like his previous stuff, but even Emmanuel Lubezki can't save this one for me. Everything feels so predictable, and the actual plot? A total mess...
I’ve always had a bit of a bone to pick with how he mashes dramatic scenes together. He tends to drown out any meaningful dialogue with those pseudo-philosophical monologues from the lead character delivered via voiceover. I actually found it somewhat engaging in his older films, but here? It’s just exhausting. It’s essentially a repeat of The Wonder.
Looking at the reviews, it seems like Song to Song isn't much better, which is a bummer because I still haven't seen it. On the other hand, I haven't seen a single bad review for Hidden Life, so I'll probably save that one for when I need something to wash away this string of disappointments. 🙂
EDIT: Just finished watching Song to song. I didn't want to start a whole new thread since there's not much to say... but yeah, it feels like a variation on a theme. Like there's this unofficial trilogy going on (The Wonder, Knight of Cups, and Song to Song) where they just swap out the actors and the setting, but somehow each one gets progressively worse...
