I’m not giving you my solitude! I won't give it up, it's everything to me... (knocking on the door of forgotten hits)

Dennis Hall41 said:Garant je grew up in a trailer—drunk veteran dad, sleazy stepdad, mom working shifts as a waitress, all that gritty stuff... honestly, it’s such a cliché for those indie souls. I can totally see her secretly relating to those young punks in Clark films.
Oh, and she looks like the type who'd just lose control and fart right in public after a few drinks without even caring.

But wait, turns out she actually went to Catholic school, her mom's a lawyer, her dad works in banking, and before she ever touched music, she was studying neuroscience and Russian. 🙂
Thoughts on the 2015 Steve Jobs movie? in Movies ·
After watching that Jobs movie with Kutcher back when it first dropped, I really wasn't feeling the whole idea of another biopic about the same guy...

I mean, Kutcher might actually look more like Jobs—they really nailed the resemblance—but man, you just can't get into it. It’s hard to connect. And honestly? The movie itself was pretty forgettable.

Now, this one? This is definitely more thoughtful and polished. The characters feel solid, the dialogue is snappy and dynamic, and you actually find yourself getting sucked into the story and feeling for the people on screen.

It’s probably not the absolute best work from either Boyle or Sorkin, but this collaboration really works! Sure, they're dramatizing certain parts of Jobs' career to build a psychological profile that works for cinema, but hey, if you were expecting a documentary, you're looking at the wrong thing anyway.

Anyway, I wanted to circle back to an older post because there was a really interesting point made there...

Hannah Watson85 said:I love how we actually get some answers to the questions (not all of them, obviously) even though up until the very end I thought we wouldn't.

That’s actually something Sorkin explained once. It’s almost like he's testing the audience's patience. He weaves these subtle hints about certain themes into the script—things that seem secondary but are actually central to the plot. It keeps you glued to the screen, wondering if you'll get all the pieces by the end. Then, suddenly, you realize the wait was totally worth it. It's a clever little trick... 🙂

Ashley Grant66 said:I thought Art Angels was alright back in the day, but this newer stuff feels way too kitschy. Honestly, you're probably better off knowing as little as possible about her. I can't tell if she's just trying too hard to be "cutesy" or if she's just naturally wired a bit weird 😁 but this is one of those things that is so incredibly awkward I actually have to watch it until the very end 🙂

Oh man 😲 Okay, besides the fact that she's super hard to follow, I have no idea what's supposed to be funny about her talking about the dog she grew up with. Yeah, something is definitely off with her 😬

But if you actually listen closely to her lyrics, maybe it makes more sense. I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but Oblivion is probably the most upbeat song about sexual assault ever written. Just... wow. 🙂

Ashley Grant66 said:Just wanted to toss a +1 in for loving Visions by Grimes since we don't talk about her much here... honestly, it's the only one of hers I keep going back to. I'm talking Vowels + be a Body + Be A Body—that last one was basically on loop while I was heading home from Emma's 😳screening. It just gives me such a boost! One minute it feels super sensual and erotic, then suddenly it's like being a lost little girl drifting through space and time...
I close my eyes until I see
i see i don't need hands to touch me be a body sorry
Be a body

Sorry for the mini off, totally overdosed on coffee today. 🕺

Don't worry, you're not off at all 🙂 For me, she was such a huge discovery right when Visions dropped. I mean, she was sitting pretty at the top of those Pitchfork-esque recommendations back then, so it makes sense! But then she kind of flew under the radar after that, so I almost forgot about her entirely. (Though now she's mostly known as Elon Musk's ex ☕ )

I didn't even think this would make the Album of the week cut, but hey, just seeing it mentioned brought it all back for me... knew someone would recognize it and give it a little nod 😉

So, am I opening up Leb and the salt? 🍿 It's a challenge, but accepted! 😛

There's a character limit when you first set up a poll, but you can always go back and edit it once it's live! Is this looking better now?

Hot Fuzz (2007) in Movies ·
I wasn't exactly blown away by Shaun of the Dead, and from what I can tell, the fanbase is pretty hardcore geek territory, which explains why there are so many movies starring Simon Pegg out there.

That’s actually why Hot Fuzz totally clicked for me! It feels like they really let loose a bit... the parody is much more obvious, and honestly, I didn't mind the goofy, lowbrow humor at all. It’s just two hours of pure fun where the time absolutely flies by. 👍

Are you always MIA on Thursdays? 😁 I mean, we can totally respect that, especially since there isn't a limit on how many suggestions we can throw out there right now...

Golden Globes 2021 in Movies ·
Honestly, without Ricky Gervais running the show, it feels like they kind of flew under the radar. And let's be real, last year's movies weren't exactly groundbreaking either. I mean, once Borat snagged Best Actor in a Comedy and the movie itself won the category... 🙄 ☕

Anyway, here's the list for you: latimes... though you might get an even better breakdown over at wikipedia.

So, I’m just now really getting into Kiarostami... I actually went looking to see if there was much about him on the forum at all. Turns out there is! Mostly just scattered mentions in general threads or stuff about American cinema history.

Man, is there even a better documentary out there? Honestly, I can't think of many other times where you see actual real-life people agreeing to basically reenact scenes from their own lives like this. It's wild.

I mean, courtroom recreations of crimes aren't exactly a new thing—anyone who’s ever sat through one of those true crime specials knows they feel pretty similar to this.

But here's the part that really hooked me after I did some reading later... Kiarostami almost uses the movie to bridge the gap between the characters. It's like he nudges the cheated family to finally understand Sabzian and find it in their hearts to forgive him. Plus, it gives the main guy a chance to meet director Makhmalbaf, whose identity he used when introducing himself to the family in the first place!
Close-Up (1990) in Movies ·
This is such a cool example of docufiction... I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it before, which makes it feel totally unique!

From what I’ve been reading, Kiarostami actually filmed the trial itself, while all those other bits about the case were reconstructed using the actual people involved.

I just love how composed the whole process feels... and man, seeing that Sight & Sound ranked him in their top 50 greatest films of all time back in 2012? That's huge! Personally, I find Taste of Cherry a bit more moving, but this is still only my second Kiarostami film...

A total pro, through and through. Whether he was out in the field or just hanging out, the guy was always so level-headed and rational, even when things were going completely sideways... It’s a massive shock to all of us, honestly. But I guess that’s just how life goes sometimes. Rest in peace.
