Best music to pair with drinks? in Music ·
We've had similar threads before, but they usually just turn into a giant list of playlists. So, I really want to stick to this specific vibe 😁

What are you guys sipping on while listening to music? Does a certain song or genre just make you crave a drink?

We've laid down some groundwork, now let's see if it actually holds up!

Lisa Davis46 said:Absinthe goes incredibly well with the classics—piano, Erik Satie, impressionists...
and honestly, nothing else hits quite like it. It’s 72% proof! Hard to imagine drinking that stuff to The Beatles or anything light.

Now this is getting interesting! Since I don't hang out with many classical music buffs, I'd love to hear from anyone else who can confirm or debunk this theory.

Lisa Davis46 said:I'm only mentioning this because this song hit me yesterday, somewhere in a shop downtown,
but I can't even place where or when exactly... I felt so lightheaded all day, almost like I was about to pass out. Honestly, I'd rather take the worst hangover instead! And I hadn't even been drinking.

For me, whenever I listen to this track, I'm picturing myself sipping whiskey on a wooden deck in a rocking chair. 🙂 Thanks for the discovery! 👍

Honestly, we should just start pairing specific drinks with certain music genres... like, you know, matching the vibe of the alcohol to the way you're getting buzzed... imagine that! 😁

What I was getting at was mostly about the beer—you could go at it all night long if you wanted, though it’s definitely not worth passing out over...

What Jessica Morris6 is suggesting is just a recipe for pure chaos—just throwing everything into one big blender! But honestly, you can't beat some good old blues rock when you're looking to set the mood and just sip on some bourbon...

We’re going to listen to and "review" one album of the week together! We’ll pick the winner here using a poll before we dive in.

Each album gets its own dedicated thread for all our thoughts and reviews.

Album of the week selection
Drop your suggestions right here! Once we have them, we’ll run a poll, and whatever gets the most votes becomes our album of the week. You can suggest as many albums as you want, though there's a limit of one suggestion per person... keeps things fair!

There aren't any super strict rules for what you pick. It can be a massive mainstream hit or some totally obscure indie gem—as long as it's available on YouTube or a similar streaming service, we're good! The whole point is just to have this awesome shared experience of listening, discovering, and chatting about music, just like we started doing in the last thread... it's been so much fun!

The nomination period runs every Thursday, from midnight to midnight, and then we’ll host the poll on Friday. You can vote as much as you like! There’s no hard rule, but if your suggestion wins, it would be amazing if you could start the new discussion thread pretty quickly after the poll wraps up. We'll make sure new threads are live by the end of the weekend at the latest... stay tuned!

Nothing beats a massive motorcycle rally with a cold beer in hand... you really can't go wrong with some good old Rock or Hard Rock. Though, there are definitely certain genres out there that basically exist just to celebrate drinking, like Folk Metal. You even get those specific punk rock tracks that lean heavily into the party vibe, especially from those bands with Irish roots.

I think Korpiklaan is one of those bands that’s pretty much specialized in nothing but drinking songs—you know, that whole Folk Metal thing. It’s just great music for getting hyped up... perfect atmosphere for those old-school pubs or a big blowout at a festival. 🙂

Assignments as Cultural Property in Feedback & Suggestions ·
I know someone already brought this up, but I’m gonna jump in and take my shot at making a suggestion too... what if we put together a dedicated PDF just for the Literature Assignment? We could just migrate all those old assignments from previous rounds over there and stuff. 🙂

You’re those restless memories that won't let me sleep...
I’ve given it everything I've got to wipe the slate clean...
But the tide just keeps coming back for more...
Sweeping me away until there's nothing left......
The life and work of Werner Herzog in Movies ·
Oh, he’s always had a thing for those epic, poetic titles, hasn't he? Even that documentary where he dives into the darker corners of the internet—he called it "Lo and behold: reveries of the connected world"... and his one about volcanoes? "Into the inferno." He just loves the drama!

I actually just finished watching "Where Green Ants Dream" the other day, and man, that title hits home... especially once you've seen the film. It really sticks with you...

He’s been acting super hyperproductive lately, which isn't necessarily a good thing because... well, when it comes to his features, quality seems to be taking a backseat to quantity.

I mean, his latest flick, Salt and Fire, hasn't really landed well with anyone, and even his documentaries aren't hitting quite as hard as they used to. Take Lo and behold, for example. It’s fine, it’s charming enough, but it doesn't really break new ground. I mostly just remember those few quirky scenes, like the one with a bunch of Tibetan monks staring at their smartphones while he wonders, "What are they doing? Are they tweeting?" 😁

He’s always had this fascination with the extremes of human nature—pushing people right to the edge of what they can endure. He’s gone through different phases, sure, but his work usually feels like an adventure, whether it’s a scripted movie or a doc. And he always finds these wildly eccentric characters... kind of like himself, actually!

In his documentaries, the focus is often on his own commentary blending with these deep philosophical messages. He’s pretty much the king of that subjective style. Most documentary directors stay behind the lens and let the footage speak, but not him.

And you can't forget that unmistakable voice! That heavy German accent gives everything such a unique layer as a storyteller. Honestly, if anyone else tried to pull that off, it would either feel incredibly pretentious or just like a cheap attempt at being Werner Herzog.

It’s rare to find a director who leaves such a massive, unmistakable fingerprint on everything they make. That’s why he’s truly one of a kind.
The life and work of Werner Herzog in Movies ·
Right after Queen of the Desert, Werner Herzog shot six more features, and he’s got two others in pre-production—well, officially announced anyway...

Personally, he’s one of my absolute favorite directors. Even if not every single thing he touches is a masterpiece, I've seen pretty much all of them!

I really can't get behind the idea that he's overrated. He has these incredible movies and documentaries with such a distinct vibe, and his commentary? It's iconic... just part of his DNA. But maybe his biggest trademark is that total lack of compromise. He dives into every project headfirst, which makes his "the ends justify the means" approach pretty controversial for some people ethically... but looking at what he actually produces, I don't see the problem at all!

I'm thinking mostly about all those wild stories and controversies that have followed him throughout his career. Like how he supposedly teaches students in his workshops how to pick locks and pull off successful break-ins, including 😬 and even some of the chaos on set... specifically that intense dynamic with Klaus Kinski, or the madness of filming Fitzcarraldo where he actually decided to haul a boat over a mountain just to get the shot!

Plus, Aguirre was clearly a huge influence on Coppola's Apocalypse Now, and it was also the first in that series of films starring Klaus Kinski.

When it comes to his documentaries, Grizzly Man, Encounters at the End of the World, Little Dieter Needs to Fly, and Into the Abyss are just top-tier. I also really loved White Diamond and Into the Inferno to start with...

It's pretty interesting that he did a scripted version for Little Dieter starring Christian Bale, which many people consider one of the best out there (Rescue Dawn)... though it didn't quite click for me personally. I still prefer the documentary.

I don't know what everyone else thinks, but I actually enjoyed Bad Lieutenant with Nicolas Cage, too. As for Queen of the Desert, that’s probably the weakest one I've watched.

There are plenty of other titles worth mentioning, but this is just what jumps to mind right now without even hitting Google...😁
Heaven's Gate (1990) in Movies ·
I haven't actually sat down to watch the movie yet, but I did some deep diving into Cimin's work a while back and read up on it. Apparently, the whole production was a total disaster zone. It ended up being such a massive flop that the studio burned through over 30 million dollars, and poor Cimin basically saw his reputation as a rising star go right down the drain.

It wasn't until thirty years later, when they released the director's cut at Venice, that people finally started looking at it differently. Some critics even went as far as calling it a masterpiece! It’s a wild 180 from those 1980 reviews where everyone was acting like it was one of the worst movies ever made...

But honestly, it's totally possible that the film just got crucified because of all that behind-the-scenes drama. Maybe everything that happened afterward was just a direct result of that initial backlash...

Look, I wasn't being sarcastic there. Mirzin is legendary just as he is.

And honestly, it’s not even about the hairy guy or those two... it’s the sheer concept of having an opera singer—a bass, no less!—in a disco band 😁 Why on earth didn't they send them to Eurovision?
