Cuk, come on, just delete this now 🤣 Seriously though, props to you for the idea, the execution, and all those little details 🙏 👍
I honestly love how the news stays as current as a web portal. Like, there was a protest held at Ban Jelačić Square today... How could that even be in print if it happened the same day? 😬 🤣
analogbear40 said:Only until midnight tonight? Then there’s probably no point in me throwing out an A-list candidate from my collection right now... because there's almost zero chance they'll beat out the competition...😁
I honestly thought we had until Sunday or Monday (midnight).....😛
I think you might have missed something—yesterday was for suggestions, and the poll is running right now! 😁 Should I just jot this one down for next week? 😁
Ashley Grant66 said:Yeah, things moved pretty fast... I'm leaning towards Spiderland. You can never go wrong with a re-listen after some time has passed, plus hearing what everyone else thinks... and we're looking at the same release year anyway.🥳
I know we rushed the whole concept change, but hey, it is what it is! From now on, Thursdays will be for suggestions, and Fridays will be for the poll. 🙂
Just watched it. Honestly, pretty impactful stuff. Though, if I’m being real, I still think Hunter S. Thompson hits harder... definitely need to give that one another watch soon. Anyway, Cimino is just top-tier filmmaking, but I won't get all bogged down in the details since we already touched on that earlier here.
One thing I noticed, though... Christopher Walken kind of established a certain vibe in this role that he’s been playing in different ways in almost every movie since, all the way up to now. Not that it's a bad thing at all! He’s had some absolute masterpieces later on, but there's just that unmistakable quality where you see him and immediately think—it's Walken.

Feel free to suggest anything that hasn't been picked yet, even if it's a repeat!
Anyway, the new poll for this week's album just went live!
Three votes cast for three different albums... so far. Just a reminder, voting stays open until midnight!
Let’s dive into something similar—same vibe, just a bit more recent.
Dead Can Dance - Amnesia
(Anastasis - 2012)
Saw the demonstration On remembrance day Lest we forget the lesson Enshrined in funeral clay History is never written By those who've lost The defeated must bear witness to Our collective memory loss
With every generation comes Another memory lapse See the demonstrations of Failing to learn from our past We live in the dream time Nothing seems to last Can you really plan a future When you no longer have a past
Memories fall from the trees Amnesia Memories like autumn leaves
If we are subject to Empirical minds I wonder what lies beyond Our memory's confines If memory is the true Sum of who we are May your children know the truth And shine like the brightest star
Memory, help me see Amnesia Memory, set me free
All my love and all my kisses Sweet Mnemosyne All my love and all my kisses Sweet Mnemosyne Sweet Mnemosyne
We can go ahead and start suggesting our new Album of the Week, what do you guys think? We were thinking about pushing the vote to Friday, but hey, Thursday works just fine...
You all know the drill! One person suggests an album to put on the ballot, and then we’ve got 24 hours to pick the winner. As for the title, there are no rules—it can be some deep cut or a total classic. The only real requirement is that it actually has to be available to stream online somewhere.
To me, Steven Wilson is basically the king of modern prog rock. Porcupine Tree was crushing it from the 90s all the way until they split up around 2009 to chase other projects. Even though Wilson stays busy with his solo stuff and various collaborations, I honestly feel like his work with the band was his absolute creative peak...
Dennis Martin6 said:Right. I still can't get over one of the wildest editing transitions I've ever seen—there's this guy spitting out french fries from his mouth and then suddenly there's a talking bear... just wild. 😁
😁 Even though some of those edit sequences feel way too aggressive, even for something this trippy.
Mark Cruz15 said:Are you talking about cannibalism? Honestly, anything can be made kid-friendly if you try hard enough, even that.
I was also thinking about how he managed to weave in those references to World War II and the atomic bomb (Hiroshima)... you see it briefly right at the start. It’s almost like the core reason why it's a haunted house, where a woman's ghost is waiting for her husband to come home from the war, and she takes her revenge by "eating" innocent girls that the bomb didn't get...
With Obayashi, it doesn't surprise me at all. From everything I've read about him, he always found a way to sneak in those anti-war themes whenever he could.
Just keep in mind that all those "actors" are basically just amateurs who happened to work with the director on commercials before this, so of course everyone looks as good as you say they do.
I’m still totally fascinated by how they originally wanted to make a horror movie before pivoting to something like this. Part of the reason they were all having such a blast on set—playing games and singing together... well, that was because nobody actually knew how to act! The director basically had to invent ways on the fly just to get something halfway coherent out of them.
But hey, there are tons of different inspirations behind this, and even though it's kid-friendly, one of the core ideas they pushed for in the script is actually a bit more serious than it looks.
So, this horror-comedy from that Japanese director Obayashi was actually supposed to be this response to Spielberg's Jaws—you know, like a haunted house vibe but with a Japanese twist. But between all the kids running around playing and the crew basically sensing the movie was gonna tank, it just kind of pivoted into a comedy instead...
And honestly? It worked! They ended up with something totally one-of-a-kind. The special effects mostly rely on these animated bits that look intentionally cheesy, and they lean into the grotesque through the acting and other wild creative choices. It’s so weirdly awesome...
I caught this a few years back and I'm definitely down to rewatch it. There's a little bit of everything in there, which is probably why it's such a cult classic...
The choice is easy: Guided by Voices is our new album of the week! 👋 Now we just need to get a thread going with the album title. You want to take the lead on this, Dennis Hall41? Especially since you’ve been following them forever and could drop some cool context... I can do it, but honestly, it’s all a total blank slate for me. I don't know the band or the record at all, and I definitely don't want to end up looking like a total bot just copying and pasting stuff...
They’ve actually got their own signature sound, and if I had to sum them up, it’d be this:
Moskau is this wild Noise/art/performance group made up of musicians from all over the Midwest—places like Indianapolis and Des Moines—even though their official Bandcamp says they're based out of Chicago...
They’re always experimenting and constantly changing things up! They’ve dropped several EPs and a few full albums already, and honestly, they just keep getting better. They’re really starting to carve out a massive spot for themselves in the American indie scene.
You can totally hear the influence of legends like Nick Cave and Tom Waits in everything they release... it's huge. Plus, their live shows? It’s less like a concert and more like some weird, avant-garde traveling theater troupe coming to town.
On their latest album, Love Supreme, they take all that experimental chaos and mix in some jazz elements... it makes them sound way more mature than their earlier stuff.
