Thanks a lot
My laptop has slowed down to a crawl, so I'm just going to do a clean install.

Do I actually need an activation key or just a Windows loader?

Does anyone know where I can grab a Windows 7 x64 ISO that actually fits on a standard single-layer DVD? I’ve spent way too much time scrolling through the last ten pages of this thread, and every single link just leads back to that same site, and their version with all the integrated updates is far too bloated for a regular disc. Any suggestions on where to find a clean download?

Honestly, just throw it on a USB stick. Create a bootable drive from the stick and 🙂

Got a new PC running Windows 7—honestly, I have no clue why they pre-installed such an outdated OS, but it’s for my mom, so I guess I'll deal with it.
The issue is that hitting the F4 key alone just kills whatever program or window is active. To be clear, I'm not talking about the Alt-F4 combo; the single F4 key is just being difficult.
Any idea how to disable this? It's unbelievable...

They probably just slapped some ancient version of Windows on there because you picked up a clearance PC at a big-box retailer. It was likely just sitting in a warehouse somewhere gathering dust until someone finally grabbed it. 🙂
Does your mom seriously think hitting Alt-F4 is how you shut down a computer???
Just tell her to hit the Start button and select Shut Down like a normal person.

I shut down my PC the normal way, but how can I stop programs from closing whenever I hit Alt-F4?
I use F5 constantly to refresh pages—but since I'm still getting used to this new keyboard, I occasionally mash Alt-F4 instead of F5, which just kills whatever window I have active...

Does anyone happen to know which recent version of Visual Studio actually plays nice with Windows 7 Ultimate?

I’ve been doing some digging, scrolling through forums and poking around online, but I just can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere.

I'm not entirely sure I follow what you're asking here. But honestly, the last few versions—including the one we're running now—are definitely compatible.

Does anyone know why Windows 7 occasionally fails to recognize USB keyboards and mice?

I just picked up a dual-boot setup, and I'm running into this exact issue...

Everything works flawlessly in Ubuntu, but in Windows 7—more often than not, actually—the system just ignores both the keyboard and the mouse. It’s incredibly frustrating; I have to hard-reset the whole machine just to get them working again. 🤦

Basically, does anyone know if this same headache exists in Windows 8 or Windows 10? If so, I might as well just install that crap now if this version won't behave...

I've run into a bit of a headache. I wiped my C drive today and did a fresh install of Windows because my laptop was running incredibly slow—it was practically crawling. Everything seems fine, except for one thing: every single time I boot up Windows, I have to manually reinstall the Synaptics pointing device. If I don't, the touchpad doesn't function properly—for instance, scrolling just won't work. To make matters worse, that installation window pops up automatically the second I log in.
How can I fix this?

So, Windows 7. It’s running on 4 cores and 4GB of RAM at 800MHz. Nothing heavy—just web browsing, spreadsheets, basic stuff... yet it crawls like a snail. Memory usage barely hits 2.8GB, maybe up to 3.8GB. I ran a malware scan and found absolutely nothing. What on earth could be eating up all that memory?

I mean, wouldn't that just pop up right there in Task Manager?

Basically... I ran a 400MB update and now it’s actually running at a decent 1.4GB. I tried looking into what was actually broken, but there was nothing to see. Total garbage.

Since I haven't really bothered to check Task Manager to see exactly how much memory Windows 7 is consuming compared to Office or my other apps, I find myself wondering if there is any way to generate a sort of comprehensive graph from Task Manager? Is it possible to get a visual summary that would show me what a normal average for RAM and CPU usage should look like?

Given that I recently set my CPU fan to adjust based on processor temperature, I am certain the processor isn't under heavy load.

I am asking this not because my computer is slow—thankfully, it isn't, as I have 8GB of RAM and a 64-bit version of Windows 7—but rather out of pure curiosity.

Hey, can someone shoot me a link (DM works too) for a working WAT remover? I've tried a bunch already and none of them actually work. 🤔

Hey everyone! I’ve been going in circles for days now, trying to get straight answers from different companies and tech shops, but I’m still stuck on this one issue:

My office currently runs three computers on Windows XP, and we're finally making the jump to Windows 7.
Naturally, I want to make sure we're using genuine software just in case we ever face an audit.

I’ve spent days scouring the web reading about OEM vs. Retail versions, and honestly, it’s just making me more confused! Some places claim you can install Windows 7 Professional on multiple machines with a single license, yet then you see Windows 7 Professional OEM listed, which seems to be tied to just one computer. What gives?

I actually called a local IT consultant, and they told me I need this: link, but I have absolutely no clue what that even means.

Does anyone here know what the best way to handle this is?

If you have three computers, you're going to need three separate Windows licenses.
In case you ever face an audit, you'll need a paper trail showing you actually purchased three distinct Windows licenses—plus, each individual machine needs its own unique serial key.

You could go the OEM / Retail route, or maybe—if you want an alternative—you could set up a contract directly with Microsoft to get their products through a monthly subscription or flat fee.

My laptop just pulled a heavy Windows update—around 100MB—and after the reboot, there it is: "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows not genuine" staring at me from the bottom right corner.

Don't just sit there being lazy. Go ahead and Google it. Search term. Let's see how this message moves. I find myself wading through a mountain of information—everything from YouTube videos explaining which specific files you need to delete (for example... This.It looks like you were cut off mid-sentence. What exactly are you looking for advice on? Give me the details so I can give you a straight answer. Run the command in CMD. If you need to reset the evaluation period, just run SLMGR -REARM. It’s straightforward. It’s happening again. This piece of junk won't accept the command; it claims SLMGR isn't recognized as an internal or external command. So, we're right back to the same old advice: just uninstall the Windows update. Windows update KB71033.Alright, I'm hunting for that update, but it’s nowhere to be found. I've tried searching, but nothing comes up. It's just not there.

The message is still hanging around in the bottom right corner.
What should I do?

Yeah, my Windows isn't genuine. When my hard drive died about three years ago, I ended up with a non-original installation on the replacement drive. It doesn't really matter—before that, I had a laptop bought straight from the store with legitimate Windows pre-installed. I never actually received an installation CD with the machine, but after digging around online, it seems people running legal software run into this exact same issue.
