God, I have to ask—is there anything on Windows 7 similar to a browser's history? Something that lets me actually look back at my recent activity.

Hi there,

I’m pretty familiar with how different types of licenses work, but this one is tripping me up—will a Windows 7 Dell OEM version actually install on just any random computer?

And if it does, is it "official" enough that if an auditor swings by my office, they won't start breathing down my neck about compliance?

I’ve got two licenses I picked up online; the disc and the sticker both say Dell, but there isn't a single mention of 😁
on them.

Honestly, I wouldn't mess around with that if I were you... If you're just a home user, there's really no point—you'd basically be paying a massive premium for an office setup you don't even need 🙂

I don't know from firsthand experience, but wasn't it always the case that the IRS only cared about actual receipts? Like, they didn't give a damn about stickers or anything else...

Look, I don't have all the answers—I'm just trying to use some common sense here, which is why I'm asking. 😁

From what I've gathered lately, the way things work now is that they carry these USB sticks around—they just plug them straight into the PC to see if anyone is running fake software.

I'm really at a loss here. :/

Hands down the best OS Microsoft ever put out—the only reason anyone should even consider moving to 8 or 10 is for DirectX 12.

I've been having issues opening Google for two or three days now. I’ve never had anything like this happen before. Every other site loads just fine.

Whenever I type in www.google.com or www.google.com I get hit with the same error: "This page cannot be displayed."

For the record, I'm running Windows 7 (Ultimate). I managed to get into Gmail and Translate by using a different search engine (like DuckDuckGo).

Yeah. I might have accidentally hit something wrong, I don't know—I can't figure out what's actually broken here. I can open all my saved pages just fine, except for the ones I bookmarked through Google.

Does that actually matter, or am I overthinking it?

Greetings!

Since I’m likely one of the last holdouts still clinging to Windows XP, it’s finally time to pull the trigger on an upgrade. I’ve decided on Windows 7 Ultimate, but I’m stuck on whether I should go with the 32-bit or 64-bit version. My machine is running an AMD Athlon 3000 (2.01 GHz) 64-bit with 2GB of RAM... what do you all recommend?

Furthermore... how can I save my Firefox bookmarks and my Outlook emails?

Also, I have two drives, but one is split into two partitions. Is it better to format the entire partition (like the C: drive) before starting the installation, or can I just move my essential files over to the D: or E: drives and overwrite XP?

Thanks.

Grab the x86 version. You can always export your bookmarks to an HTML file and just import them back later. Outlook works similarly—you can either use the export feature or just manually move your PST files.

It’s honestly always better to go with a fresh, clean installation...

Is x86 considered 32-bit?

I exported my bookmarks, and I did the same with my emails, but I’m staring at this Outlook backup file and it's only 265kb. That seems ridiculous. Is it actually going to pull all my emails back in, or am I just staring at an empty file?

Oh, one more thing—can I boot Windows from a USB stick, or should I stick to using a DVD?

edit: Fixed the Outlook issue. I missed a checkbox. Absolute amateur move on my part.😁

I am currently running Windows 7 64-bit in English.

My audio isn't working at all. When I attempt to play music through Winamp or watch videos on YouTube, there is simply no sound. In Winamp, I am greeted by this specific error message:

Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration

Error code 88890010

Everything was functioning perfectly until now. Winamp will play for a short duration, but then it suddenly glitches and cuts out entirely. This seems to happen specifically after I restart my computer; if I don't perform a full reboot, Winamp refuses to work at all and remains completely frozen.

And, as I mentioned previously, even YouTube fails to produce any sound.

I suspect this might be because I neglected to properly shut down my computer last night. I set it to sleep mode, but we had a power outage.

However, when I powered it back up this morning, the system didn't even prompt me to boot Windows into Safe Mode.

Another possibility is that I recently installed some updates from Microsoft. Following those, I went into Windows Update and disabled automatic updates altogether. I find receiving twenty or thirty updates at a time to be unbearable; they cause the system to hang during shutdown for fifteen minutes or longer. On one occasion, it nearly took half an hour just to turn off.

I have heard rumors that Microsoft intends to force users to migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 10 without our consent, and since Windows 10 is such an invasion of privacy, I decided to disable the updates.

Furthermore, another reason I opted to disable updates is that they occasionally cause Winamp to only display the media library, forcing me to manually reopen the main window and the playlist, whereas other times, all windows appear as intended.

I am using Winamp 5,5 and I am thoroughly satisfied with it. I belong to the old school; I truly fail to see the purpose of all these modern Windows innovations, aside from their blatant intrusion into our personal privacy.

I have reinstalled the audio driver for my Asrock H61M-VS motherboard. For the time being, the sound is working correctly. I sincerely hope that it remains this way.

This exact issue resurfaced again this morning, and once more, I managed to resolve it using the same method. It feels as though I might be dealing with some sort of malware. I ran a full scan with AVG, which reported that everything was clean, but when I scanned the system with the shareware version of Ad-Aware, it flagged a single threat which I promptly moved into quarantine.

The core of the problem seems to be tied to how the computer shuts down. If I put the machine into sleep mode and then wake it back up, the audio functions perfectly fine.

....A "clean," untouched Windows 7 64-bit image, including all integrated updates through May 2015.
