Anyone still running Windows 7?

Not entirely sure if I’ve landed in the right spot here, but I could really use some guidance.
I'm making a sudden career move, and my new gig requires me to work on Windows 7. Right now, I'm running Windows XP, but I have a Windows 7 disc sitting right here. How much of a headache is this going to be? Is there a step-by-step guide out there that someone like me—who basically knows nothing about this stuff—could follow to get it done solo?

Are you looking for general operating instructions for Windows 7, or do you specifically need guidance on the installation process?

First off—I need a deep dive on the installation process. Give me the granular stuff, like "click this button, then hit that option," etc.
If I can actually pull that off, then I’ll move on to the next steps...

I wouldn't bother restoring it.

Honestly, I think it would be much better if you just went ahead and returned it, rather than sitting there waiting around hoping the BIOS will finally decide to let you boot from the CD every single time you try 😉.

I'm hitting a wall with my Windows 7 x64. Every time I jump into Windows Update and hit that check for updates button, I get this error message👋Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. Just wanted to drop an update on how things went—I think I partially pulled off the installation.
My big mistake was skipping the formatting step, so now I’m stuck with two versions of Windows installed side-by-side, and I have to pick one every time I boot up.
On the bright side, it’s actually kind of convenient because I’ve got work to get done, and it's way faster to just jump back into my old setup. Plus, I know some of my older software won't even run on the new OS anyway.
But now that it's installed, I'm hitting some snags. My PC is acting up with the USB ports, throwing errors left and right. I also tried downloading some drivers, but honestly, I was just grabbing whatever looked remotely correct from the list. Only one of them actually worked; the rest are total duds. Does this mean I need to hunt down different ones, or did I just screw something up during the process? On top of that, certain apps are being stubborn—like Paint.NET refusing to install, and DTV isn't responding at all.

Look, if you're actually going to do this right—and I mean properly—you need to format the drive during the installation process. And for heaven's sake, list out exactly what hardware you're working with; you should be pulling your drivers directly from the manufacturer's official website, not guessing. Don't just wing it if you have no clue what you're doing.

I didn't format the disk because a buddy at work suggested it—I’ve got stuff I need to wrap up, and I know my way around Windows XP, plus I already have all my software ready to go. I honestly can't say if I'd even want to deal with Windows 7.
The machine is a Lenovo G570; I'll get you the full specs once I'm back home.
What's tripping me up is that I'm seeing multiple driver options, but the descriptions are identical. What's the deal there? Is it a trial-and-error situation, or am I missing something?

Alright, I’m gonna ask this again since nobody actually bothered to answer my last post... so here we go. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and every single time I reboot or just shut the thing down, when I try to boot it back up, it just hangs forever on that "Windows starting" screen. It totally freezes up on me, and the only way I can get anything done is to force a hard shutdown, wait like five minutes, and then it finally works... why the hell is this happening? Can anyone please help me out here... I even tried running Windows XP and it does the exact same thing, which makes zero sense because the whole rig is brand new...

So, how’s it acting once you boot into Safe Mode? If it’s still locking up there—even in Safe Mode—then we might be looking at a hardware headache. What kind of power supply are you running? Also, I'm curious why you're calling this a "new" build—these components are roughly four years old, aren't they?

Man, I don't know, I haven't tried Safe Mode yet because I have no clue how to actually do that, haha. I've got a 550W ATX... and I guess I mean they're "new" from the store, you know? Like, I know they aren't brand new out of the box, but they were bought recently and stuff... if you catch my drift...

Plus, I've got this other headache with MSN where it runs, but when I try to click on a contact, nothing happens :S it looks like it's open in the taskbar, but the actual window just won't pop up... any idea what's going on?

Also, look, your GPU and CPU are pretty power-hungry—if you’re running some off-brand, no-name power supply, those 550W might be a total joke. Pop the case open and check the sticker on the PSU to see what the amperage looks like on the 12V rail; you really ought to be seeing at least 30A there.
