Melissa Hayes41 said:Hey everyone. I’m pretty comfortable using PowerPoint, but I really want to figure out how to use it within Flash—or at least, that's how I think it works. A girl in my college class showed off this presentation that was absolutely breathtaking. It looked like a tree where the branches would shift and grow as she moved through the slides; instead of just flipping pages, it felt like we were traveling along the branches with every click. Everyone was stunned by the design, and when my friend asked her later, she mentioned she did it in Flash. Now, I'm not sure if I actually remembered that right or if I'm totally confused. If I'm on the right track, could someone please walk me through how to do this? Thanks 🙂

Was the tree something like this?

No... I can't quite find the right words to describe it. It was more like, the first slide just showed the canopy, and then when she clicked to the next slide, it felt like the view just "panned" down to a branch, and suddenly there was a branch in the background... basically, the slides were traveling along the trunk. 😁 That's about as best as I can explain it. 😁

I think that’s exactly what you're describing.

They have tons of presentations like that there. They're popular, and they aren't exactly hard to put together. That said, they definitely have their flaws—you can't use italics, you can't add audio, and you're stuck with whatever fonts they provide instead of picking your own; plus, all the presentations tend to follow that same repetitive style.

It isn't Flash or PowerPoint. People mention some kind of "cloud" system, though I'm not entirely sure how that works.

If you're a student, you can probably snag a premium account through your school credentials. If not, you'll just have to stick with a basic account, but keep in mind you won't be able to protect your work, meaning anyone can just rip it off.

They do have quite a few drawbacks, though (no italic font options, no audio support, you can't pick your own fonts—you're stuck with whatever they offer—and all the presentations follow the same basic style).

If you're a student, you might be able to set up a premium account using your school credentials. If not, you just make a standard account, but then you won't be able to protect your work (anyone can just copy it).

Bravo, that's perfect, it's exactly what I had in mind.🙂 It's just that specific site that doesn't work for me because the templates are so limited. I'll try looking into this "cloud" thing you mentioned. Thanks!🙂

The Cloud is just how they built the site, or maybe it's the type of platform, I'm not entirely sure. There aren't really any other sites for making these kinds of presentations, unless you count the ones used to make things similar to PowerPoint. You can even build your own template on prezi.com if you want; why bother using theirs?

I'm running into some trouble with these styles in Word 2007... My senior thesis is coming up soon, and I want to set up my own custom style to use for the entire paper. So, I created a style, renamed it "Senior Thesis" and all that, but whenever I actually start typing, I can only manage one line before things go sideways... As soon as I hit , it jumps to a new line and automatically switches the style on me. If anyone actually knows how to build these styles properly, I could really use some help here:
I'm looking for a Times New Roman font, size 12, and I want it so that when I hit enter, it doesn't leave an extra blank line like some other styles do (when I click "modify style," I have absolutely no clue what I'm supposed to select under "font style," "Style based on:", or "Style for following paragraph"—it just says "no style" or "no spacing"... o.O)
I hope I've made myself clear enough 😁

Look, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you won't find any of that in the Outlook 2007 classic menu. I've been digging through the add-ins, and honestly? That option just isn't there. It's like it doesn't even exist in the add-in settings. Total dead end. 😉

Thanks anyway! 🙂

Hey everyone!

Just a quick little question for all you Excel experts out there! 🙂

So, I've got this specific form set up in Excel that's split across four different pages (for instance, page 1 covers rows 1 through 44, page 2 starts at row 45, and so on...). When I try to print this thing out so that every single one of those Excel pages fills up an entire sheet of paper, I keep running into this annoying issue where page 1 only prints out covering about half of the letter-sized paper... I've already spent quite a bit of time messing around with the scaling options—trying both "adjust to" and "fit to"—but honestly, nothing seems to be working quite right...

What's the best way to make sure page 1 in Excel actually fills up that whole sheet of paper?

Thanks!

p.s. I am currently playing around with the Row height settings, and I can see that adjusting them might technically solve the problem, but it feels like such a tedious manual process... if I end up having to deal with 100 different forms that are each several pages long, I'd basically have to manually eyeball every single row just to get that perfect look where the Excel rows are stretched out to fill the entire page...

First, go into your Page Setup and check whether you have the orientation set to portrait or landscape in Excel. Looking at this half-printed mess you've got there, it looks to me like you've set it to landscape in Excel, but you're trying to print it in portrait.

I don't see why you'd need to make a whole new style when you can just tweak the ones you already have. Obviously, hitting changes things because you're starting a fresh paragraph. Check out these quick tutorials—maybe they'll help you fix whatever's going on.

Maybe try setting up multiple print areas for each page (tbf, haven't actually tested it myself)

Maybe you should try jumping into the Print Preview first, then switch over to the page break preview so you can actually see how your pages are laid out—basically, where those horizontal lines are sitting on the pages. If they’re cutting off right in the middle of a sheet or just look completely wonky, just hover your cursor over that line until it turns into that double-sided arrow icon, and then just "drag" it all the way to the edge of the page. Does that fix it?

Of course, hitting the key is going to switch the style—that's just what happens when you start a new paragraph. Maybe take a look at these quick tutorials; they might actually help you sort this out.

So, here’s the deal: I don't know the first thing about Access, but since I want to get comfortable with it and I know I'll eventually need it for work, I've been hunting around. It feels like there aren't many good resources out there in American English, so I've been scouring the web for some solid English books, but no luck so far. If anyone happens to have copies of the Wiley - Microsoft Access 2007 Bible (including those practice files), the Microsoft Press - Microsoft 2007 step by step, or even the Que - special edition Using Microsoft Office access 2007, I would be so incredibly grateful if you could send them my way (just shoot me a private message and I'll send over my email). Or, honestly, even just some solid advice on the fastest, easiest way to wrap my head around this stuff would be amazing. Is it actually as intimidatingly complicated as it looks?

Is there actually a way to shrink a single cell's width in Excel without affecting the entire column?

My trick is to just split the cell visually into two parts and then add borders wherever you need them. It works for me! 🤷

Cell width and height in Excel are all about the column width or the row height.
If you need more than one cell sitting in a single column, just tweak the column widths or merge the cells.

Here is the situation: I need to build a database in Access. It feels somewhat embarrassing, given how much one can accomplish within Access itself. But here it is: 😁
It should be quite simple for someone proficient, yet I find myself struggling endlessly, unable to pinpoint my error. 🙄 My topic is an American gymnastics competition.
I have set up the following tables and attributes:

competition_registration (registration_id, contestant_ssn, registration_date, discipline_entered);

contestant (SSN, first_name, last_name, state, discipline, rank_achieved)

discipline (discipline_id, discipline_name, event_time)

judge (SSN, first_name, last_name, assigned_discipline)

medal (id, rank_achieved, discipline, medal_type, jeweler, message)

I am attempting to link the tables using shared attributes—specifically, linking the discipline from the contestant table to the discipline name in the discipline table. However, it refuses to work. Even after calmly attempting to resolve this by assigning more primary keys to force the connection, it still fails...
At this point, I am feeling 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 and am seeking assistance! 😢

It’s probably a total breeze for anyone who actually knows what they’re doing, but me? I’m just spinning my wheels here, struggling and struggling, and I honestly have no clue where I'm messing up. 🙄 My topic is an American gymnastics competition.
So, I set up my tables and attributes like this:

competition registration (registration_id, contestant_SSN, registration_date, discipline_enrolled);

contestant (SSN, first_name, last_name, state, discipline, rank_achieved)

discipline (discipline_ID, discipline_name, competition_time)

judge (SSN, first_name, last_name, discipline_judged)

medal (ID, rank_achieved, discipline, medal_type, jewelry_store, message)

I’m trying to link all these tables using those shared attributes—you know, like connecting the discipline from the contestant table to the discipline name in the discipline table. But it just won't work! Even after I take a deep breath, try to stay calm, and throw a bunch of primary keys at it to force the connection, still nothing...
At this point, I am totally 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 and I am begging for some help! 😢

I don't really mess with databases in Access, but I'm thinking this might be the fix:
The discipline_ID in the discipline table has to be the exact same data type (personally, I’d go with integer) as the discipline field in the contestant table. On top of that, you have to link the discipline_ID from the discipline table to the discipline field in the contestant table—not the other way around. That's because discipline_ID is the primary key in the discipline table, making the discipline field in the contestant table the foreign key.
