And honestly, don't even bother trying to sync it right now. Just set it once, leave it alone, and see how it goes—it’s not going to break anything...

Also, if you haven't already, just type services.msc into your Start menu search, pull up the Services window, and check if the Windows Time service is actually running. If it isn't, just double-click it, hit "Start," change the startup type to Automatic in the dropdown menu, and click OK.

I'm still getting an error message whenever I try to sync, but since the clock is actually keeping time just fine, I'm not losing any sleep over it.

Oh, one more thing—which time zone did you actually select when you were installing Windows??

My local time here in Washington, D.C., isn't the issue—I always double-check those settings. If I had the wrong time zone selected, the manual sync would have flagged the discrepancy immediately.
I'll give this services.msc thing a shot and let you know how it goes...

Go ahead and open up the Task Scheduler via your Administrative Tools—then navigate through the Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > time Synchronization. Once you're there, just double-click on the Synchronize time task. On the General tab, you'll see a "Change user or Group" button; right next to it, it should say—by default—that the task runs as a NETWORK service. If that’s what you see, go ahead and hit that button, type "LOCAL SERVICE" into the text box in the new window, and close it out. After that, just right-click the task, select Run, and let me know if it throws any errors at you.

I picked up a Dell 5030 with Windows 7 pre-installed. I couldn't make it over there yesterday, and honestly, today isn't looking any better—work, a game, you name it—plus, I’m a total amateur when it comes to this stuff. Question: since it comes with everything pre-installed, can I just handle the setup myself, or should I be calling in a pro? I have no clue what I'm doing, even after glancing at the manual. I'd rather not start poking around and end up staring blankly at a screen for three hours. Thanks in advance for the help!

If you know enough English (assuming it’s set to English), you should be fine doing it yourself. It might ask you to pick a keyboard layout (US), a time zone (Eastern Time), and to create a username and maybe a password, which you'd have to type in every time you boot up Windows.

Nothing too complicated 🙂

There’s no deep philosophy to it. 🙂

First off, regarding Laki: "My daughter is my everything; plenty have asked for her, but I haven't given her up!"

Now, about the computer: alright, I'll give it a shot and let you know how it goes. I see there's a CD included, but the label claims everything is already pre-installed on the laptop (so why bother with the disc, and which version of Windows 7 am I actually running—the cheaper OEM Windows kind made specifically for this machine?). Tell me, what about my old computer and all my data? How do I move everything over to the laptop? Does this new one come with all the software I had on my old setup? I'm not exactly a tech enthusiast, but this old machine has been a total workhorse. It holds a few photos, a lot of documents, and a mountain of emails. So, I just toss it all onto a thumb drive, plug it into the new laptop, and call it a day? I'm honestly tired of begging people to fix this thing or reinstall everything while feeling like a complete idiot because I don't know anything. I need to brush up on this. My English is just good enough to get by for this, I suppose.🙂

Everything is already installed on your laptop. You can check the sticker on the bottom to see which version of Windows 7 you're running. I'm guessing it's one of the cheaper versions! 🙂
The CD is mostly there if your Windows ever crashes and you need to run a Recovery to get everything back to how it was when you first bought it.
For moving your files, a USB stick is probably the easiest way to go. Emails might be a bit trickier depending on what software you're using. Outlook Express isn't really a thing in Windows 7 anymore; its replacement is Windows Live Mail, which you can grab for free online. If you happen to be using MS Outlook from an Office suite, it’s easier—you just export the Outlook.pst file from the old machine and import it onto the new one.
I'm assuming your new laptop comes with Office - home and student pre-installed, but it's likely just a 60 day trial. After two months, it'll stop working and ask you to register or buy it. 🙂

😉

I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of a cracked version of Windows. Basically, how do I track down the crack and wipe it out completely?

Honestly, there probably isn't any other way besides just doing a clean reinstall of the system. Who knows what kind of mess a program like that leaves behind? There are likely a dozen different things it could have tweaked.
If you're feeling up to it, maybe try Googling that specific crack to see if anyone else has run into this.

Honestly, you're better off just doing a clean reinstall of Windows, because there is really no way to fully scrub that kind of thing out of your system once it's in there.☕
There will always be some little leftover traces hiding somewhere.😁

Hey everyone 🙂

I was wondering, is there any way to pin a folder right to the edge of the screen, kind of like how the Start menu works?

Sure, you can just ditch the crack, but if we aren't doing that here, -> google 👍

When I set up the drive, I split it into two partitions: a 150 GB primary one for the OS and my essential apps, and the rest for... well, everything else 😁 . But now that the installation is finished, it's only picking up that 150 GB partition. The rest of the drive is just invisible 🤷

just head over to Disk Management and see what the deal is with those partitions

right-click on Computer-->Manage-->Disk Management 😉

I've got two computers running Windows 7 Ultimate. I set up a HomeGroup on my laptop ages ago, and the other PC actually sees it... but I can't get in. When I click "view HomeGroup password" on the laptop, absolutely nothing happens. And when I try to change it? It just tells me it's impossible.

Go ahead and head over to the C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking folder and just wipe out the idstore.sst file—once that’s gone, give it another shot to see if you can actually view or change the password.

Also, just a heads-up—you really need to make sure the clocks on both computers are perfectly synced if you want any hope of accessing the HomeGroup. If there's even a few seconds of drift between them, the system is just going to act up and tell you the password is wrong.
