Keith Bennett38 said:From what I can see, you didn't exactly digest my last post. All I said was that when you buy a computer with Windows pre-installed, it usually comes bundled with a 60-day trial of Microsoft Office.
You paid for Windows, so it's yours and it's legal. But if you found a pre-installed version of Office (usually just an icon sitting there on your desktop), that’s just a 60-day trial! 🙂

However, following Cilin's advice, you can always just download the free LibreOffice instead. 🙂

PS: Glad you managed to sort everything out on your own. 😉

I think I followed most of it (mostly?). My previous post was probably a bit rambling. I didn't actually have Office before, but I got it now, so we're good there.

1. Now there's an issue with my email. I've been using Outlook Express on my old PC, but on this new one, I set up Windows Live Mail. I get my emails as soon as I log in, just like on the old machine—everything is synced up perfectly. The question is, how do I move my old emails from Outlook Express over to the new Windows Live Mail?
2. Also, this trial antivirus expires in about 20 days. What's the play here? Should I grab something like Avast? If I download it now, will they clash, or should I just wait until this one runs out?
3. How do I see the notification on the taskbar when a new email arrives?

Thanks!

2. driftingnomad68 replied 🙂 Just to add to that, I'd say uninstall that trial antivirus first, then go ahead and install Microsoft Security Essentials. It's a great Microsoft antivirus. I've used it since day one and never had an issue, plus it doesn't cost anything. 🙂
3. I usually keep my email client open and set to check for messages every five minutes, so whenever something comes in, that little envelope icon pops up near the clock in the bottom right. (I use "Outlook" for my email). 🙂

2. replying to driftingnomad68 🙂 I'd just suggest this: first, uninstall that trial antivirus you've got running, then go ahead and install Microsoft Security Essentials. It's a solid Microsoft antivirus. I've used it since day one and never had a single issue—plus, it's free. 🙂
3. My email client is always running in the background, set to check for new messages every five minutes, so that little envelope icon pops up in the taskbar by the clock whenever something arrives. (I use Outlook for my emails). 🙂

I tried following what he suggested, but I got a bit lost somewhere and couldn't quite make it work.
The antivirus tip is great, though. Exactly what I need, especially since it's free. I'll definitely get around to doing that.
I used to see that notification for incoming mail in Outlook too, but does it actually show up like that in Windows Live Mail?

2. Uninstalled the old one and put on the one you suggested. Done and dusted. If it works for you and everyone else, it’s a godsend for me!
3. I set up that notification too.

As for the whole Outlook situation, I managed to make things unnecessarily complicated around 3 PM. I tried running it via USB eventually, but the program can't seem to read anything, or whatever the issue is. I'll give it another shot today. I moved everything that didn't need moving, except for Outlook itself.

I somehow managed to overcomplicate this whole Outlook thing around 3 PM. I tried using a USB drive eventually, but I guess the program just won't read it or something? I'll give it another shot today. I moved everything except what wasn't needed, but I left Outlook behind.

I'm not really sure how you made it so complicated. You just follow those instructions driftingnomad68 linked for you. Find the file in the folder where Outlook Express keeps all your emails and copy it onto a USB, for example. Then, it’s probably best to copy that file from the USB to the desktop of your new PC or into your Documents folder, and then just run the import in Windows Live Mail like the guide says.
I've done this a few times now and it usually goes pretty smoothly. Hopefully, you'll get it sorted too. 🙂

I'm dealing with a complete lack of audio on my Windows 7 SP1 system. It stays completely silent until I manually launch C-Media
Does anyone have a solution for this? 😁
P.S. I messed with the appearance of the start button and now I have no clue how to revert it to its original look 😂

I have a bit of a situation on my hands and could really use some insight. A friend of mine is having a nightmare trying to access YouTube; he keeps getting hit with a "404 Not Found" error every single time. My gut feeling is that there’s an entry in his hosts file blocking the site, so I figured the fix would be as simple as jumping into that file and stripping out the offending address. However, even after I went through the trouble of enabling the setting to show all hidden files, I can't seem to find the file anywhere. I've been digging through c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc, but it’s just not appearing where it ought to be, and I'm honestly at a loss as to why it's being so elusive. If anyone has a moment to help, I'd truly appreciate it—we're in a bit of a bind here!

Keith Bennett38 Asks:
I honestly don't see how you managed to make this so complicated. Just follow the instructions from the link driftingnomad68 provided. Locate the file in the directory where Outlook Express stores all your emails and copy it onto a USB drive. From there, it’s easiest to just move that file from the USB over to the desktop or your Documents folder on the new PC, then run the import process in Windows Live Mail exactly like it says.
I've run through this process a few times now. For the most part, everything works without much of a headache. Hopefully, you'll have better luck than I did. 🙂

I copied everything onto a USB drive and moved it over to my documents on the new PC. Then, I ran an import into Windows Live Mail—first by toggling off the read-only setting—and it pulled all the messages from the inbox and sent items. It’s processing them one by one, pretty fast, actually. The problem is, now that it's done, I have no clue where they actually ended up. Does anyone know where those imported folders under storage Folders show up, assuming they even exist?

One more thing—I’ve got Imported Folders under storage Folders 1 and 2 showing up now, but they're completely empty. Nothing will open.😕

Looks like Microsoft really messed something up here, but I think I found a fix on a forum. Apparently, if you click that little arrow next to the Imported Folders under storage Folders, the messages should pop up. Maybe?

Original poruka:

Maybe try checking if those Imported Folders under storage Folders are actually showing up right. I guess it might just be a glitch with how things are being indexed, but who knows.

My bad if this sounds super obvious or if you've already covered it, but you mentioned...

And it's just cluttering things up by creating Imported Folders under storage Folders, I guess.

If you click through those Imported Folders under storage Folders, it just says "There are no items in this view." I guess. There should be a little arrow next to that "Imported Folders under storage Folders" icon. If you click it, I guess it should expand and show the subfolder. It’s probably tied to your email address; if you just click the little arrow next to that one, I guess your messages should show up in there.

My bad if someone already mentioned this—it might seem pretty obvious. Honestly, I think the UI design is kind of a mess; you click a folder and assume the messages didn't import, when really you probably just need to hit that little arrow next to it.

Hey there. I’ve run into a bit of a situation with my Windows 7 machine. It just won't 😁. Every time I power it on, I'm slapped with this message:

Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings and click "Next."
3. Click "repair your computer."#

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible"

So, I pop in my Windows 7 disc, hit F12, and tell it to boot from the DVD/CD drive.
It prompts me for a language, which I select, then I click next. From there, I pick Windows 7 and head straight into the "repair your computer" menu to try and troubleshoot the issue, but it just ends up throwing this at me: startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically windows 7 along with this:

Problem signature:
Problem Event name : StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 03: unknown
Problem Signature 04: 21200472
Problem Signature 05: ExternalMedia
Problem Signature 06: 4
Problem Signature 07: Corrupt File
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

Just a heads up: the computer refuses to boot even in Safe Mode.

Is there any way to actually fix this without losing all the files currently sitting on my hard drive?

I also noticed this error: d👋indows\system32\drivers\compbatt.sys is corrupt

I gave it a shot, but once I hit step 7, I get stuck with this error:

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation

Where do I go from here?

p.s. if I skip the repair entirely and just run a fresh Windows 7 installation, am I going to lose everything?

In step 7, did you actually use the drive letter that popped up for you back in step 5 instead of just typing f:?

Try running that same command from step 7 a few more times—just keep at it until the repair actually kicks in. If that still fails, you’ve got System Restore or Startup Repair available in step 6. Just a heads-up though, running a fresh installation wipes everything, so when was the last time you actually backed up your data?

I haven't run any backups because this computer is brand new—it hasn't even been on my desk for a month.

I’ve gone through the exact same troubleshooting steps over ten times now and I get the same result every single time. The only variation is that a few times it would dump a massive list of commands and descriptions on me, so I just typed sfc /scannow again, only to be told I have to restart Windows to complete the process. So, I restart, but then the same damn 0x00000f error pops right back up; I've tried repeating this entire loop several times in a row and absolutely nothing changes.

As for a System Restore, I can't perform one because there aren't any restore points available since the machine is practically straight out of the box, so I haven't set one up yet.😢
