So, I just picked up a new computer pre-installed with Windows 7 Home Premium... but I'm actually leaning toward either upgrading to Windows 7 Pro or perhaps just going back to Windows XP...

Now I've got a bit of a dilemma on my hands. Given that this machine is running an Intel i5 processor, has 4GB of RAM, and uses an Nvidia GT230... do you think I might run into any compatibility issues if I decide to run XP?

Since I intend to use this computer primarily for business purposes, my main priority is ensuring the system stays as stable and reliable as possible. Considering how much shorter the support lifecycle seems to be for Windows 7, I would truly appreciate it if someone could provide some sensible insight into the actual advantages of sticking with Windows 7 (and let's set aside the aesthetics—I'm perfectly fine with the Yahoo widgets provided).

Thank you...

It's a work machine, so I really need it to be as stable and reliable as possible. Since Windows 7 won't stay around forever, I guess I'd appreciate if someone could lay out the actual benefits of sticking with W7 (forgetting the looks... the Yahoo widgets are fine by me).

Thanks...

I'd stick with Windows 7 and not go back to those old versions. It's fast, stable, and works great. Plus, it actually supports modern tech.
With Windows XP, you might run into some driver issues with certain hardware.
Instead of me listing everything, I guess it's best if you just use the newer Windows for about two weeks—you'll probably notice the perks yourself.
Personally, I love the little things, like how when you rename a file, it doesn't mess with the extension (the part after the dot, like .jpg or .exe).
Also, there's a button for New folder right on the toolbar in Windows Explorer when you need one.
And if you click an MP3 in Windows Explorer, all the song info (tags) shows up at the bottom, so you can edit them right there without needing some separate Tag & Rename software or digging through properties.
There's plenty more, but you'll see it once you start using it.
For what it's worth, Windows 7 hasn't crashed on me once, and I've been using it since Release Candidate 1. 🙂
One downside is that Windows Mail and Outlook Express aren't really there anymore; they're replaced by Windows Live Mail, which honestly isn't much of a replacement for Outlook Express in my book.

Windows 7 is excellent with drivers. It has tons of built-in support for common hardware, and if it doesn't have it, you can usually find it online easily, so it's unlikely anything will stay unrecognized.
The networking and file sharing are pretty solid too.

The machine is mainly for work, and my top priority is having something rock-solid and reliable... especially considering how short the lifespan of Windows 7 might be, so if someone could give me a straight answer on the actual benefits of sticking with Windows 7 (setting aside the looks... those Yahoo widgets are fine by me), I'd appreciate it.

I've been using Windows for a lifetime, and honestly, nothing ever hit me quite like Windows 7 did. I grabbed a new desktop—running a Core2Duo at 2.93MHz, 4GB of RAM, and a GTX 250—and I went ahead with a standard Windows XP install. Everything works perfectly, but I couldn't stop thinking about trying out 7 as a dual boot. My first shock was how fast the installation finished, like, only 8 minutes (I seriously doubted it would even work), and then the second thing was how it didn't ask for much during setup and ended up having all my drivers ready to go right out of the box. Using it is just incredible. After messing around with Windows 7 for a couple of days, I actually wiped the whole drive and just installed Windows 7 exclusively, because I knew deep down I wouldn't be going back to XP. Don't get me wrong, I liked XP, but this is just on another level. There are way too many pros to list here, but once you spend a few days living in it, I'm pretty sure XP won't even cross your mind anymore.
Best,

Best regards,

The reason it didn't ask where to install is actually pretty simple: you clicked Upgrade here

I have a question—I am somewhat confused regarding which drivers I actually need here.
It was installed on my laptop without any issues, yet this specific prompt didn't even show up for me...?

My Windows 7 Ultimate finally arrived today, and I was wondering if there's any way to customize the taskbar a bit. Specifically, I'd love to center all the icons and make them larger—sort of like how they grow when you hover your mouse over them. 🤣I'm having a little trouble finding the right words to describe it...😬 I know I saw this setup somewhere else once, but I just can't seem to recall where exactly.
Thanks!

I'm clueless about the drivers, but I have to ask—how did you get that temperature reading to show up in the bottom right corner? Is that some kind of widget or a specific program? Thanks.

Just pop in a disc from another version of Windows when you start up the computer and tap the boot key—usually Del, Esc, or F8 depending on the machine.
Once you see the prompt on the screen asking you to press any key, the installation for the new Windows will kick off, and you can just wipe the partition where the old one lives or format it before moving forward with the install...

You're probably thinking of some kind of Windows docks

Yeah, sure. Just Google "Windows docks" and see which one fits your style best. 🙂

I was just wondering if anyone here might have some insight because I haven't had much luck getting through to Microsoft and my searches on Google haven't really turned up anything useful, so I wanted to see if anyone knows or has actually tried using a Sagem F@ST 2604/2644 modem with Windows 7 Ultimate, Home, or perhaps the Pro edition?

Look, I’ll be the first to admit I’m definitely not some tech wizard or a computer genius, so I’m coming to you guys because I really need a hand here!
I’ve been running Windows XP on my machine, but I finally went ahead and picked up Windows 7.
So, now what am I actually supposed to do? Do I have to wipe Windows XP entirely just to get Windows 7 up and running, or is there some other way to handle this? And seriously, how do I even go about doing that?
If anyone is willing to walk me through the installation process, please, for the love of God, explain it to me because I am completely lost...
If you could give me a super detailed, step-by-step breakdown, I would be eternally grateful.

Also, since I know for a fact that all my current programs are going to get wiped out during the process, should I be moving all my installers onto a USB stick or maybe burning them onto a CD so that once Windows 7 is installed, I can just reinstall everything from scratch? Please, help me out here, because I genuinely have no clue what I'm doing!

Look, if I were you, I’d just take that thing to someone who actually knows their stuff and let them show you how it's done once and for all!!!!!!!!!!

If you’re actually dead set on installing Windows 7, you might want to go through this tutorial first:

I honestly think they’ve made the installation so straightforward now that even someone who barely knows how to use a computer could set up Windows. If you actually need a tutorial, then you’re probably 🙏

I’m currently running Windows 7, as you can see from the attached screenshot, but I just installed this new theme/skin and now I’ve got all this junk popping up over my icons:

Does anyone know how the hell I can get rid of this? Thanks.

Any way to get rid of this? Thanks

1) Just switch the theme back to a standard Windows theme, or
2) try a system restore to a point before you installed the theme. 🙂
