Let them keep clinging—on a piece of junk like that, you’re basically asking for nothing but headaches once you try running Windows 10.

One of the ways you might be able to fix this could be through this:

Man, it just randomly started working again. I tried every single one of those fixes from Google and that link you sent, but absolutely nothing worked. Then, out of nowhere this morning, I booted up my PC and everything was totally fine :S technology is such a headache sometimes.

Maybe one of those things you tried actually worked, it just needed a little time (or a reboot) to kick in. 👍 Glad the issue's sorted though.

Look, I just rebooted my rig every single time I messed with those settings. But hey, at the end of the day, the important thing is that it’s actually working now.

I finally sorted out my installation issues, and Windows 7 is officially up and running.
Now I’ve hit a snag with the audio. It wasn't working on Windows XP with the onboard sound, but once I picked up a dedicated sound card, everything worked perfectly. The issue now is that Windows 7 isn't detecting this card, and I can't find any drivers for Windows 7 anywhere.

The card is a Creative Sound Blaster.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

Can I just jump straight into installing Windows 7 Ultimate without wiping everything? Right now I'm running Windows XP Pro Pack 3—got a ton of games and programs installed that I really don't want to lose 👎

The official Microsoft guide on upgrading to Windows 7... useful stuff.

You won't need to reinstall everything... ☕

Well, I finally went ahead and installed Windows 7. 😍

The installation itself was incredibly quick and smooth—honestly, you couldn't ask for a lighter process. My only real headache was trying to get my partitions set up exactly how I wanted them. For some reason, the installer would let me delete or shrink them, but it wouldn't let me expand any of them. 🤷 I ended up having to fix everything manually using Easus PM after the setup was finished.

I’m also finding the Start menu a little bit clunky; the icons on the right side don't pop out when you hover over them.

By the way, does this thing actually feature Aero like Windows Vista did?

The install was super quick—probably as fast as it gets. I just couldn't get the partitions to behave how I wanted. I could delete them or shrink them, but increasing the size was a no-go. 🤷 Ended up fixing it after the fact using BlackBerry.

The Start menu feels a bit clunky to me since those icons don't pop out when you hover over them.

Also, does this thing actually have Aero like Vista did?

It definitely has Aero, assuming your graphics card can handle it. It's on by default. 🙂

Maybe the drivers didn't install correctly or something. Give those a shot first—and if it still won't turn on, try going to personalize-->window color-->enable transparency.

Well, I actually have Aero 😬. I was thinking specifically about Flip 3D (to me, everything just feels like Aero 😁), similar to how it works on Vista. But anyway, I managed to find it. 🙂

I could really use some help here, because I am losing my mind. I’m trying to extract a file from an archive, and right around the 20% mark, it fails, claiming "probably the disc is full." It’s obviously not full. I've noticed this keeps happening with larger files. Last time, I managed to bypass it by extracting directly to my C: drive, but I have zero space left there now, and frankly, I don't have the patience to move files around and recombine them. Since I never ran into this issue back on Windows XP, I guess it must be something to do with Windows 7. Does anyone know how to configure this so the error stops popping up?

wanderingtiger30 said:Wait just a second, did I get DirectX included with Windows 7? Am I supposed to manually install DirectX 9, or should I be looking at the newer DirectX 10 or 11 for Windows 7?

Look, DirectX 11 comes standard with Windows 7 and it handles all the modern titles just fine, but let me tell you, it is absolutely not compatible with the classics. I ended up having to manually download and install DirectX 9 myself to try and fix things, but even then, Rainbow Six still refuses to run.

Of course. I’ve noticed this happening specifically with the massive files. Last time, I bypassed it by extracting directly to my C drive, but now there's zero space left there and I really don't feel like moving stuff around and merging folders manually. Since I never ran into this headache back on Windows XP, it clearly has something to do with Windows 7—so, who knows how to tweak the settings to stop this from happening???

Check this out (figure 4): http://www.itechtalk.com/thread3595.html

If your TEMP and TMP variables are set up like they are in that image, then you're looking at a classic lack of space on your C drive—basically, because these extraction programs default to using the Windows temp folder, which lives on C.

If you actually have some breathing room on a different partition, just create a random folder there to serve as your new temp directory. Go ahead and edit both variables (figure 6) and under 'variable value,' just type in the path for that new folder. Give the computer a quick restart and try extracting the file again. See, during the process, the program creates a temporary file in that folder that's just as huge as the actual contents of the compressed file itself... so if that ZIP or RAR file is 7 GB, you need at least 7 GB of free space on whatever partition your temp folder is sitting on to make it work.

I've been running into an issue for about a week now. I can't seem to check if there are any new updates available because it just keeps throwing an error. The troubleshooter suggests it's some kind of temporary network glitch interfering with Windows Update. Any idea how I might fix this?

Hi there!

I'm running into some issues with my MS-DOS programs while using Windows 7.
The software itself runs perfectly fine, but I can't get the character encoding right—instead of standard American characters, I'm getting all these weird symbols. On top of that, the biggest headache is that I can't seem to get the programs to go full-screen anymore...
Back when I was on XP, I used to just hit ALT + ENTER to fix that. 🙄
Now, whenever I try that shortcut, I get an error message saying it isn't supported by the system. 🤷

Is there any way to work around this?? 😕

I currently have an older machine running a Pentium 4 2.4 processor, 512 MB of RAM, an ATI Radeon 9500 graphics card, and Windows XP SP3. It actually runs quite smoothly, without any stuttering or noticeable lag. I was wondering if perhaps Vista might be a viable option for this setup, or if I should just stick with Windows XP for the time being. Thanks.

Honestly, you should probably just stick with Windows XP until you can swing a new machine; it’ll save you the headache. ;D If you want Windows 7 to actually run smoothly without constant stuttering, you really need at least 2GB of RAM—that's the sweet spot—or maybe 1GB if you're feeling optimistic, but let's be real, half a gig is just way too little to handle anything decent. Stick with XP for now.

They run fine, mostly, except I can't figure out how to fix the encoding—instead of standard American characters, I get weird symbols. The biggest headache, though, is that I can't maximize the window to full screen anymore.
On XP, I just used ALT + ENTER. 🙄
When I try that here, it tells me the system doesn't support it. 🤷

Is there any way to make this work? 😕

Running old 16-bit programs like that is a losing battle. Honestly, my recommendation is to just download the DOSBox emulator. It takes some time to read the manual and learn the basics, but DOSBox is the way to go. 👍
