Mark specific Headings and subheadings using styles based on that tutorial
Once you make the Word TOC, those numbers will just show up on their own

I don't get it... 🤷

Sarah Adams48 said:I tried it with some junk content I made up and it worked fine, except all the page numbers were just "1," which makes sense since I didn't bother applying any styles to the text.

Can you walk me through this?

You go to Modify Style > format > numbering, but in the 2007 version, the window only shows basic numbering
Back in 2003, there was an Outline Numbered tab with lists like 1., 1.1, 1.1.1, etc., but it's totally missing here in 2007... why?

Look, if you’ve gone ahead and numbered your chapters "manually"—and if you’re actually happy with how that looks—then there really isn't any reason to go deleting or messing with them; it won't interfere with generating the table of contents.

All you really need to do is make sure those headings are assigned to the correct styles, and that should be that.

Just slap those headings into the right styles and you're golden.

You talking about this?

Yeah, but what if I don't have any numbered styles in my text? Like, I just have unnumbered heading styles. When I go to make the table of contents, it won't show any numbers. So how am I supposed to number *only* the table of contents? Is that even a thing?

When I try to generate a table of contents, obviously nothing gets numbered there. So, how do I go about numbering *only* the table of contents itself? Is that even a thing you can do?

Well, you can either do it manually—which is a headache—or you can set up Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles so they handle the automatic numbering for you.

I always assumed chapter headings were already numbered during the drafting stage, even without specific styles. If they aren't, then you just assign the numbering within the styles themselves and call it a day. It isn't exactly rocket science; I mean, you probably don't have thousands of headings, so you should be able to sort that out in a heartbeat.

Does this actually help?

Just check that tutorial again.

And honestly, I just can't wrap my head around why she felt the need to delete all those chapter numbers she’d typed in by hand—even though they were already finished—only to turn around and essentially redo the exact same work using Outline Numbered styles... 🙂

Look, nobody’s forcing her. If she's gonna learn how to do this right, she might as well learn the proper workflow. Next time, she'll know she doesn't need to touch the numbering at all—just stick to the styles. But hey, everyone's got their own way of doing things. Not gonna lecture her on it. 🙂

Here’s the situation: I’ve finished my paper with seven chapters, all broken down into three levels. So, technically, the work is done, but I have absolutely no clue how to put together a proper Table of Contents. Doesn't that sound absolutely terrible? It’s not like I had to go back and delete any chapter numbers, but I really wanted to learn how to do this the right way from the start.

Sarah Adams48 said:Basically: I've already written my paper in seven chapters, broken down into three sub-levels—so I actually have the work done—but I just don't know how to put together the Table of Contents. That sounds pretty terrible, doesn't it?

No. It would sound truly terrible if you knew how to build a Table of Contents but couldn't actually write the damn paper. 🙂

Relying on automatic heading numbering definitely has its perks, but it can also be quite stubborn—if you will. Word should be your servant, not your master. There really aren't any "right" or "wrong" ways to do this; there are just faster or slower ways, more elegant or more clunky ways, and so on.

It feels like I can write the actual prose much faster than I can organize the data. It’s frustrating. I know so many people around me who have absolutely no clue how to structure content properly. I’ve asked for advice, and honestly? It’s been useless. Some suggested dumping everything into an Excel spreadsheet, others told me to just do it manually—basically any bad advice except the right way.

I’ll probably be back with more technical headaches once I get further into this project. 🙈

Sarah Adams48 said:I’ll probably have a few more technical questions before I finally wrap this project up. 🙈

Here she goes again. Why even bother with all the formalities? 🙂

Honestly, it’s not the people who "still have questions" that worry me—it’s the ones who actually know what they're doing. Most people, generally speaking, are just incredibly clueless when it comes to this stuff.

I finished setting up the Table of Contents, but I ended up having to fix one mistake manually after the fact.

Here’s the issue: some of my headings were too long and wrapped onto a second line, so the TOC treated every single line as a separate entry and numbered them all. How was I supposed to handle that properly?

What’s the big deal if the title spans two lines? I mean, unless you actually used ENTER-om to break them up—you know, like starting a whole new paragraph?

I clearly had to separate them by hitting ENTER-om, since I didn't know how to handle the Table of Contents properly before. Is there any other reason why the title would be numbered twice?

hey, quick question, kinda urgent. my wife finished up a term paper and now I gotta make sure the page numbering starts on the second page, but without showing a "0" on the cover.

basically, the first page stays blank, then the second page kicks off with 1, and so on.

any idea how to pull that off?🙂

It wouldn't hurt to use the forum search bar once in a while... take a look at this.

Man, whatever. I was just looking for some stuff, you know? Did a quick Google search on a tech forum while I was at it.

Turns out I can't even check my grammar because I don't have the language pack installed. Great. 😠 Guess I'm heading back to the university library tomorrow. Just hanging out with the undergrads, haha. 🙏 Honestly, screw people who can't even handle studying on their own.

Anyway, catch ya later. And thanks.

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with this weird issue I'm having with my Word documents

Every single time I'm working on a file and try to save it using
the exact same filename, it won't let me, so I'm forced to just pick a different name instead. Now I've got like a dozen
different versions of the same damn document cluttering everything up. To make matters worse, I can't even delete those old versions
because it keeps telling me I can't delete them since the document is currently open in Word, even though it definitely isn't. Sometimes it even claims the file is read-only. It’s not set to read-only, and even when I go into the folder properties to uncheck that box, it just keeps switching back to read-only on its own, so I have no clue what's going on here. Even if I copy the file over to a completely different folder, it still gives me that same error when I try to delete it.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me

Amy Turner said:Every single time I work on a doc and try to save it under a new name...

First off, clear out your TEMP folder—just wipe everything in there. It’d also be smart to turn off AutoSave and hunt down any files ending in *.tmp with a $ in front of the name (you'll need to have hidden files visible, like in Windows XP or Windows 7),

Second, grab a folder you call "experiment" and make a copy of that document there to mess around with. Try opening the glitchy file and deleting everything inside, then see if it saves. Other option? Open a totally blank one. Copy over paragraph by paragraph (skip the empty lines) from the old one to the new one. Save after every single paste. If the first 5 paragraphs are fine but it breaks after the 6th, then you know exactly where the error is hiding... etc.

BTW: If it isn't top secret, upload it somewhere online so we can take a look and see what's up. (Just scrub the sensitive parts)
