I still vividly remember my very first gynecologist appointment—I was such a nervous wreck that I actually ended up feeling physically ill before even getting there. To make matters worse, I was under the impression I’d be seeing a woman, but when I walked into the exam room, it turned out to be a male doctor. Honestly, I nearly died from pure anxiety right then and there.
It was supposed to be just a quick ultrasound, but he could clearly tell how terrified I was; he eventually tried to lighten the mood by joking, "Was it really that scary?"

I realize they aren't exactly looking at everything during those specific scans, but still, it can be incredibly awkward for some women.

What has your experience been like? I’ve heard quite a few women—friends, colleagues, people in general—say that they actually prefer a male doctor for vaginal exams because, strangely enough, the men tend to have a much gentler touch than the female doctors.

What do you all think? Any experiences to share?

I found the whole experience quite uncomfortable, and frankly, I still feel a bit uneasy about it. It feels more natural to me to see a male gynecologist; since I’m dealing with male anatomy regardless, it seems somewhat illogical to insist on a female practitioner 🙂

Hardly.
We typically spend our time lamenting the meddling of an archaic Church in gynecological practices or debating how political maneuvering affects opportunities for Americans, among other grievances. Most seriously 😁
I encountered this issue with both male and female doctors, as I find it impossible to draw any meaningful distinction based on gender; the variation is far more significant from one individual to the next.
Initially, there was a sense of nervousness, but that subsided quite rapidly.

To me, gender doesn't really matter. I felt a bit awkward during my first visit, but once you realize it’s just a routine procedure—much like a regular checkup at the dentist—you quickly get past that initial discomfort.

Oh, tell me about it. When my OB-GYN was doing my ultrasound, I honestly felt violated. 🤣
She shoved that probe in so aggressively I thought it was going to come up through my mouth.

Honestly, the first time was just incredibly awkward... I mean, I still feel a little weird about it now, but it’s better than it was. It's just hard for me to fully let loose and be totally relaxed during those things.
I also go to a male gynecologist sometimes—and honestly, it’s fine.👍
I've never actually seen a female doctor for this stuff, so I really wouldn't know how it compares...😉

The way she shoved that probe in there, I honestly thought it was going to come out through my mouth.

Forgive me, I realize this isn't particularly humorous, but 😂😂

In those specific moments, I simply fix the gynecologist with a look so menacing they'd think I was about to break their bones; they mutter something about necessity, I give them one more grim stare, and suddenly they find a reason to hurry things along. 😁

That whole preoccupation regarding whether a doctor is male or female is, quite frankly, utterly absurd.🤷

I have to admit—my gynecologist during that first visit was actually quite easy on the eyes. Tall, dark, handsome... kind of a distraction, if I'm being honest! hehe! 😁
But anyway, back to the unfortunate part.

I’ve been seeing the same female gynecologist for years now, and honestly, I wouldn't change a thing. 🙏 But I would never, ever step foot in a clinic run by a man. It just feels wrong to me. When I'm with a woman, I can actually relax, whereas being with a male doctor would leave me dying of embarrassment.🙂 Seriously, that sounds even worse than being violated!🤣

I just don't get how some women can feel comfortable sitting there in front of a guy.😕😕😕

Gosh 🙄

I've never felt uncomfortable, except maybe the very first time, but now it's no big deal. 😁 I actually see a male gynecologist, and besides, all I ever see is the speculum anyway—gender doesn't matter to me at all, whether it's gynecology or any other medical field.

At first, I found the whole experience quite uncomfortable... eventually, I managed to adjust, but let’s be clear: I wouldn't say I actually enjoy it.

I have to agree with Sam Richardson2... since men are usually the ones handling my luggage anyway, it honestly feels more natural for me to have a masculine physique.😬

My husband is honestly such an amazing guy—really one of the best—but I still can't help feeling pretty embarrassed about it. The very first time it happened, I felt like I had just landed on Mars 😂

On my way to the OBGYN right now... I was just at my doctor's office earlier too. It’s always the same routine, even if there's that little bit of discomfort you just expect 👎. Honestly, though? Dealing with their medical assistants is way worse than seeing the doctors themselves. Every single one I've run into so far has been just awful

I actually forgot my skirt the first time, so I ended up having to strip down right there in front of him 🤣
but he was honestly amazing—he really helped me relax and totally knocked out my nerves (it’s funny because he had been stressing me out some other day, but the second I saw him, I felt such a sense of relief)
It's such a bummer that he isn't working at the clinic anymore and moved over to a department at the hospital, otherwise, he'd be my go-to guy forever

ugh, nightmare😳
so he says good morning to me, and I'm just like, fine, good morning.
then he asks if I'm okay—I told him no. He goes "why?" and I was like, because you're freaking me out😁
he actually laughed, though, so I guess I relaxed a little bit.
honestly, my OBGYN is hands down the hairiest guy I've ever met in my life,
like, seriously, he looks like a grizzly bear😁
thank god those appointments don't last long!
and then there was my first big fail,
that one outfit that's supposed to be easy to slip on...😢 well, I put it on totally backwards😢
and yeah, things can't really get any worse than that, right?😁

To me, the very idea is unnatural. With a woman, I can feel completely at ease, whereas being with a man would leave me dying of pure embarrassment!🙂 Honestly, that sounds more traumatic than anything else!🤣

I simply cannot wrap my head around how any woman could ever feel comfortable in front of a man in that setting.😕 😕 😕

Hmm... I don't know... perhaps it's simply because he is a physician, and I am certain he views me strictly as a patient rather than some sexual object he intends to lay hands on later. 🤷

I don’t feel awkward about it at all. I remember how mortified I was the very first time—I actually had to mentally brace myself just to get through it—but now, it feels completely normal. Honestly, I’d much rather deal with a trip to the dentist!🙂
To be fair, I felt far more self-conscious during my first massage when a man was working on me; I was expected to strip down to nothing but those tiny disposable thongs... though even that discomfort faded pretty quickly.😂

I seriously don't get how some women feel comfortable being checked out by a dude.

Personally, I've always stuck with female doctors. But then there was that time I had to go in for a D&C, and it was nothing but male doctors around me—not a single woman in sight for those three days (besides the nurses, obviously). After that ordeal, I realized I couldn't care less if the doctor is a man or a woman.

I never really felt awkward about it; it was more just this underlying anxiety about whether everything was okay. There’s honestly no better feeling than when your doctor tells you, "You're perfectly healthy."

Also, I don't bother with any special waxing before an appointment. I shave once a month right after my period, but the thought of grooming specifically for an exam doesn't even cross my mind. Like, hygiene matters way more than whether or not you have hair or how long it is.

Then he asks if I'm doing alright, and I tell him no, and when he asks why, I just tell him because I'm terrified.
He actually laughed at that, which helped me chill out a little bit.
Anyway,my doctor is hands down the hairiest human being I have ever encountered in my life,,
seriously, looks like a freaking grizzly bear,😁
thankfully it doesn't take forever!
And here's my first big fail,
that little corner where you change.😢 I put my clothes on inside out.😢
Yeah, it literally couldn't get any worse than that.

I stick to a monthly routine once my period is over, and the idea of rushing to shave just for a checkup never even crosses my mind. To me, staying hygienic is far more significant than whether or not there's hair present or how long it is.

But honestly, just like any other woman who maintains a regular grooming routine, they’ll see that you take care of yourself. Even if you happen to catch them at an awkward time right after a session, it doesn't matter—what really counts is that you are clean.

Hahaha, oh my goodness, the exact same thing happened to me! 😂😂
It was such an incredibly awkward moment, wasn't it? 😵🤦 To make matters even more uncomfortable, my previous therapist was a bit flighty—almost as if they were performing a role—which only added to the embarrassment. However, I have started seeing someone new now, and she is truly wonderful. 👍 I feel like I can discuss absolutely anything with her and ask any question that comes to mind. I've also had a couple of sessions with a female specialist, and she was just as fantastic. Honestly, I don't really see much difference between male or female therapists.🙂
