Look, I know how to do it, but is that even allowed here? We're talking piracy now, right? Pretty sure the mods would have a heart attack.

The thing is, it isn't just happening with torrents; it's popping up in other apps too... 🙂

I'm pretty tied up right now. I'll probably get something set up by tomorrow, take some screenshots, and then we can figure it out.

Check the Event Viewer and see if it's throwing any errors.

Miracles happen!😉😉

It’s just a temporary "zoom in, zoom out" effect, not a permanent way to shrink your desktop icons.
Just right-click on the desktop, go to View, and pick Large, Medium, or Small icons. Done.

If you just want to tweak things, right-click on the desktop, go to View, and pick Large, Medium, or Small icons.

On my machine, once I set those icon sizes, they actually stay that way even after a full reboot!! And it carries over to every single folder I open in Windows Explorer too!

Honestly, the best move would be to just have them dump their HijackThis log so we can actually dig in and see what's going on!

So, we're looking at that classic Kernel-Power Error ID 41 again. Honestly, it’s like when your car just decides to die in the middle of a busy intersection on the I-95 for absolutely no reason—one second you're cruising, and the next, everything just goes dark and silent. It's incredibly frustrating because the system isn't even giving you a heads-up; it just shuts down, leaves you hanging, and then acts like nothing happened when you reboot. Usually, this means the hardware hit a wall or the power supply just tapped out, leaving your PC staring at you blankly. It's a total headache.
So, did you actually go into your settings and kill the sleep function entirely, or is it still hanging around somewhere?

Are you referring to HIBERNATION? I actually disabled that feature quite some time ago, if that's what we're looking at here.

It looks to me like you’re missing some core files in your %systemroot% folder, and having an "unknown" user profile is a massive red flag.
Did you try to go in and mess around with the part of the system that handles running processes? Because if you started hacking away at those settings, that would explain this mess.
At this point, you might be looking at a full system repair or just biting the bullet and doing a clean reinstall of Windows to get everything back to normal. 🤷

I haven't touched a single setting, and frankly, I have no idea why it's displaying "user unknown"....

Here is the situation... After running a full system scan—I had Windows check if anything was missing or if any files were corrupted—it seems your theories were incorrect. Everything appears to be perfectly intact, and all files are exactly where they should be. As for HijackThis, it kept flagging certain files as missing, but from what I've read on various tech forums, that's just because it isn't compatible with x64 versions of Windows, nor is it compatible with Windows 7; quite a few people seem to run into that same issue where it claims files are "missing." That’s precisely why I decided to run the native Windows system scan to be sure....

So, we've ruled that out too....Does anything else come to mind? (Other than the obvious suggestion that I should just ditch Windows 7 entirely) 😁

So I finally picked up my own Windows 7 😍
Everything went pretty smoothly, except for one weird hiccup right at the start! I kept getting this "CD/DVD Drive missing" error message. It made zero sense to me—I mean, if my hardware was actually broken, how would the installation even start in the first place? 😕

But guess what? I fixed it in the simplest, most ridiculous way possible: I just popped the disc into the DVD Drive, set it as the 1st Boot Device, and boom—it worked!

Anyway, I’ve been digging around online and found a ton of people complaining about that exact same error during installation. Does anyone actually know what causes that specific glitch?

Also, quick question for the experts here: I grabbed the OEM version (home, 32-bit), which is supposed to be tied to just one machine. Apparently, they verify it by checking the computer's hardware, and I read somewhere that upgrading components might cause issues.

Is it actually possible that if I, say, grab a new graphics card or just cram a bit more RAM into the system, Windows won't run properly? Or worse, could it refuse to recognize my license entirely?

Just to clarify, if I purchase Windows 7 Ultimate, am I allowed to install it on two separate machines—like a laptop and a desktop? Or is the license restricted to just one device?

You can install it on as many computers as you want, but you can only ACTIVATE it with the same license on one machine.

So, is this going to be another mess like the situation with Microsoft? Do I need to pick up an extra license, or what’s the deal? I need it to work on both of my computers.

From what I recall, you're stuck with just one computer for that version. But hey, definitely look into the Premium version—I think it lets you license more machines—and there’s also a Family pack that comes with three licenses. Oh! And don't forget about the Retail version; you can use that on multiple computers too, just not all at once. You’d have to unregister it from one machine before it works on the next.

Anyway, that’s just me talking from memory! Let me go surf the web for a bit and I'll get back to you with the actual details.

EDIT: Okay, I did a little digging! So, here's the deal with the Family pack: it gives you three Home Premium licenses. It's priced at $149, though I'm not entirely sure if you can pick that up locally here in the States.
Every other license is basically a one-and-done deal, meaning if you want more licensed setups, you'll need to grab more individual licenses. Honestly, though, grabbing the Family pack is going to be way cheaper than buying three separate ones!

I’m thinking about picking up an Ultimate Retail version from someone on a forum, so I was wondering... should I go with the 32-bit or the 64-bit version? Maybe one is better than the other, I guess.

I'd probably just stick with 32-bit. 👍

Quick question. Is SecureW2 compatible with Windows 7? I can't tell if I'm just struggling to get used to the new interface and the different layout of settings, but since I installed it, I seriously can't find where to configure anything.

I attempted to download a torrent earlier, but after waiting for about an hour, there was absolutely no sign of progress. I was bracing myself for the inevitable failure...

As it turns out, nothing happened; the torrent finished downloading without a single hiccup. I suppose I should just take the win while I can, though I'll be sure to post a screenshot if that dreaded Blue Screen of Death decides to make another appearance.

Just run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor and see what it says.
