Maybe give that Partition Magic software a shot 🤷 though I’m honestly not sure if it even plays nice with Vista.

And while we're on the subject, what am I supposed to do about drivers for Windows 7? Like, seriously, where am I even meant to find them when there isn't a single thing online to download? 🤷

Well, I gave Microsoft a call to ask when the release is scheduled, and they told me it's coming mid-year since they aren't doing any more testing phases! Apparently, you can download the Windows Vista Service Pack 2 beta now, but the full version of Service Pack 2 for Vista won't be out until March...

Wait, how can there be no testing phases? Where did your RC1 and RC2 go?

Honestly, I think it’s just the same crap in a different box—different packaging, same garbage underneath.

And what about Windows 7? What am I supposed to do about drivers? It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack—there isn't anyone left actually hosting downloads for this OS. 🤷

I honestly don't think it's possible. I've been running some tests on my end, but I can't get it to work no matter what I try. That said, I'm not 100% certain myself, so I could be wrong.

Hey guys... I'm looking to grab this beta and throw it on my new rig (😁) just to see if it actually runs.

Quick question though... should I go with the 32-bit or the 64-bit version? How do I even tell if my machine can handle the 64-bit build?

Just install 32X and you won't have a single thing to worry about! Stop letting those 64 enthusiasts get in your head and just grab the 32X instead.

I have a quick question for the group... which version should I be downloading, the 32-bit or the 64-bit... and how am I supposed to figure out if my hardware can even handle a 64-bit installation?

I'd personally suggest sticking with x86 👍

Read the entire thread before you start a war you can't win.

Just download the 32-bit version. It’ll run 99.99% of everything that works on Vista anyway.

Do I really have to keep repeating myself, or is one explanation enough for the smart people in the room?

I'm looking to install Windows 7, and I have a question: if I install Windows 7 onto my C drive where Vista is currently running, will it wipe out my files (like movies) on my D drive? Or will installing a new OS just clear everything from both drives at once?

As long as you don't go in there and format anything, everything stays right where it is. Even if you decide to format the C drive, all your stuff on the D drive will be perfectly fine.

The drivers should work fine. I installed them, but I'm hitting a wall trying to find the WLAN driver anywhere.

I just finished testing out two different beta builds—one was some 66xx version and now I've moved on to 7000—and honestly, I’m pretty satisfied. It finally feels like a top-tier OS. To give you the quick rundown:
The installation took maybe 15 minutes, and it boots up way faster than Vista or xpa ever did. Drivers were a breeze too; most just installed themselves automatically, though I had to grab a few specific ones through Windows Update. The only thing I actually went out of my way to download was the latest ATI drivers—not because anything was broken, per se, but I needed them for high-def resolution on my TV... plus, this version of Windows isn't such a resource hog on my RAM and CPU. Everything is snappy, and all my old software from the Vista days runs perfectly fine here. I've run into a few minor bugs, but nothing that's actually stopped me from getting things done—all my apps and games work just fine.
So, if you're looking for advice regarding Windows and Microsoft 🙂, don't bother with the x64 version; just stick with x86. Anyway, that's my two cents.

I just finished installing Windows 7 and I have to say: absolute perfection! There is just one thing bugging me: I have my current Windows on the C drive along with a Windows.old folder from Vista, but when I boot up, I don't see any option for a dual boot menu—it just bypasses everything and loads straight into Windows. Is it actually possible to have a dual boot setup since both the old files and the new OS are sitting there?

Just install the Windows Vista driver. It'll work fine.

Not exactly. The reason you’re seeing that extra folder is simply because you didn't wipe the partition before installing Windows 7...☕

I'm thinking about putting Windows 7 on my old laptop—it's a Dell Latitude—so I was wondering, what kind of drivers am I actually going to need for things like graphics, sound, and all that other stuff?
