Jacob Morales6 said:I'm thinking about installing Windows 7 on my laptop—specifically an HP 6735—and I was wondering which drivers I should be looking for regarding graphics, audio, and everything else?

You’ll essentially need every driver that is compatible with that specific version of Windows. For instance, when you get to the graphics side of things, your best bet is to head straight over to the NVIDIA or ATI websites to grab the most recent drivers available for Windows 7.☕

I have an Acer Aspire 6920 g and just finished installing Windows 7, but I immediately noticed that the Acer Empowering Technology isn't working! It claims the OS isn't supported. I even tried running it in Vista compatibility mode, but no luck there either.

Nah, it’s not working. I keep getting hit with some "Code 10" error message.

That isn't even working!
But whatever, here's what I'm actually dealing with now;
I burned Windows 7 7000 onto a DVD, then installed it on my laptop. After that, I tried using that same damn DVD to install it on my desktop. I set up a partition on my D drive, formatted it, and the installation started fine, but once it hit 30%, it threw an error, froze everything, and forced a hard reboot! What the hell is the issue?

@smartie
The driver will be pulled in via the update process anyway.

@Aspire1
How exactly are you planning on installing it?
What kind of error did you actually get? For God's sake, we don't have some psychic ability to know which specific error you're staring at.

I carved out a 20 GB partition (New Volume, everything looks fine), and when I attempt to install—not an upgrade, but the other option you see mentioned online—it starts up, copies files, and moves on to "Installing." But right when it hits 11%, my CD drive starts making this loud buzzing noise and slows down; then it buzzes again, slows down again (like it’s struggling to do something but just can't), and after a while, while still stuck at 11%, it throws a "missing file" error and tells me to try again... and it just keeps looping like that! I even reset my BIOS to default settings and tried again, but nothing changed. I formatted the partition using the Windows 7 installation options, yet the result is identical. It always freezes at 11%, and honestly, I'm at a total loss here.

Did you try it with a different DVD?
Go ahead, burn Windows 7 again at 8x speed. Because clearly, what you wrote isn't working—it won't even boot from the DVD.

Aha! I've got Ashampoo Burning ROM on hand, so hopefully that does the trick! I really can't be bothered dealing with Nero—the whole download, installation, and crack process sounds like a massive headache. I'll give it a shot and let you guys know if it works! Thanks.

Doesn't matter what you're frying with, just make sure it's on 8x!

This version is fantastic. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now, and I can confidently say it outperforms Windows XP SP3 in so many ways. It runs smoother and is much less demanding on resources than Vista. That said, Windows 7 isn't perfect just yet. For instance, some antivirus programs aren't compatible, there's an issue with MP3cama (though it's fixable), and driver support can be hit or miss. But considering this is still a beta release, Windows 7 is easily the best Windows—and the best OS—ever created.

The beta has been great; I've been running it for a few weeks now, and honestly, it beats Windows XP SP3 in so many ways. It’s faster and lighter on resources than Vista, though it isn't perfect. For instance, some antivirus software isn't compatible yet, there are issues with MP3cama (though that's fixable), and driver support is still hit-or-miss. But considering this is just a beta, Windows 7 is hands down the best version of Windows—and the best OS—ever made.

...I second that statement.

It runs smoother and doesn't hog resources nearly as much as Vista does, though let's be real, Windows 7 isn't perfect either. Sure, some antivirus software won't run, there are issues with MP3.com (though that's fixable), and driver support is a headache right now, but since we're clearly dealing with a beta, Windows 7 is easily the best Windows (and honestly, the best OS) ever built.

The reason those antivirus programs and apps aren't working is simply because it's still just a beta; you'll see everything stabilize once the official release finally drops.

I don't get why people say antivirus software doesn't work... I've tried a few different ones and they all seem fine—right now I'm running Norton and it works perfectly, updates and everything

Garbage antivirus software. I've wasted my time with both Avast and Norton before...

It isn’t just about the antivirus software—everything else is working exactly the way it did back on the old system.

the system's just gonna pull those drivers right through the update process

Nah, won't work. I need those specific drivers for this WLAN card, and my internet is actually running through it right now.

1. So, I went ahead and installed Windows 7, but things aren't exactly running smoothly—the CD/DVD drive is acting up and a few other features seem broken. I took a look at the Device Manager and noticed there's a question mark next to "other devices > SM BUS controller." I've tried hunting for a driver online, but I can't find anything, and even Windows Update isn't pulling it down for some reason. To make matters worse, my motherboard's driver disc won't even launch. Right now, I've got Windows XP running on my C drive and everything works perfectly fine there. My specs are roughly an Athlon 5000, 2GB of RAM, and a Gigabyte motherboard
.

Also,
2. does anyone know how to set up compatibility mode for XP?

Thanks in advance!

That original installation disc you have...
Pop it into the drive, open it up, and locate the setup file.
Right-click on it, hit properties, and prepare yourself for an absolute headache of a menu.
Navigate to the compatibility tab and set it to run on Windows XP Service Pack 3—some systems might only show you SP2, but either way, it should get things running.

I just finished setting up a W7 build.7022 (running on VMware), and honestly, it’s pretty solid. Everything I’ve thrown at it so far runs smooth as silk—haven't run into a single hiccup yet.
