I mean, honestly, if you're just stepping onto the scene without knowing how things actually work, you're basically flying blind, and it’s kind of hilarious to watch people try to wing it when they clearly haven't done the legwork yet. wiredtrucker89 says:
I mean, honestly, what's even the big deal with just overclocking straight from the Earth? It’s not like anyone's actually doing things by the book anymore, you know? I don't get why people make such a massive production out of it when you can just jump right in there and tweak the settings without all the extra steps. It feels like one of those things where everyone acts like there's some huge, hidden danger, but if you know what you're doing, it's basically just a little bit of fun with your hardware. Just a thought, really.☕

So I’ve actually been overclocking straight from the Earth settings, which is wild, but I finally figured out what was messing everything up. It turns out I had that Silent and Calm setting toggled on in the Earth menu, so the processor was just constantly throttling its own frequency like it was trying to save pennies. Total facepalm moment.

nimblemaker52 said:Man, if you had just laid it out like that in the first post, we wouldn't even be having this conversation right now.

I mean, honestly, I haven't the slightest clue, so just go ahead and Google it. 😬 Honestly, CPU-Z is probably just tripping and giving you the wrong info anyway.

Finally got it sorted out! 😁 😁

I don't know, man, I just feel like everyone is constantly rushing to some finish line that doesn't even exist, you know? It’s like we’re all sprinting through a marathon where the track just keeps getting longer and more exhausting, and honestly, I’m just over it. I was sitting there thinking about how much energy we waste trying to stay ahead of things that don't actually matter, and it’s kind of wild when you really sit with it. People act like if they aren't moving at a hundred miles an hour, they're failing, but I think there's something to be said for just... existing without all the noise. Anyway, just some thoughts rattling around my head while I was staring out the window today. Not that anyone asked, but whatever. wiredtrucker89 says:
Hold on a second... walk me through this again. I’m in the middle of formatting the drive—should I be going with a standard format C or what? And does that option actually include a clean disk wipe? I tried booting from it earlier, but the whole thing just hangs; it sits there staring at me, doing absolutely nothing. I know we've got some real experts in here, and even if you're just some casual user who knows a thing or two, I'll take it. Honestly, I'm just grateful for any help or advice anyone can throw my way.

Whoa, hold up a second!! How many actual drives are you running in that rig? I'm trying to figure out if you're just rocking one single HDD split into two logical partitions, or if you've actually got two physically separate hard drives sitting in there. 😁 😁

Nicholas Collins68 said:Just boot the computer from a Windows 10 DVD... you can easily format the entire drive if there aren't any partitions set up, or just wipe the C drive if there are... and then just proceed with the installation. As for the "clean disk" part, he didn't mean anything special; he just meant a fresh install, like skipping the beta version entirely and going straight to the RC build...☕

Man, did you even read what I said? I tried to boot it up, and it just hangs there, staring at me indefinitely...

Look, you aren't going to pull off an installation that way, man. You’ve gotta wipe the drive clean before you even think about popping that DVD in to boot from it and start the install process. If you happen to have a Windows XP setup lying around, you can just run that to get it done. If not, I could probably hook you up with some utility to reformat the hard drive, but there's a catch—that kind of software just goes scorched earth on everything it finds on any connected drives, so you really need to back up your files somewhere else first if you don't want them gone forever.

wiredtrucker89 said:You won't be able to run the installation that way!! You have to format the drive before you even insert the DVD to boot from it and start the install! You can handle that using a Windows XP setup if you have one on hand. If you don't, I can send you a utility to reformat the hard drive! Just keep in mind that the program wipes everything it finds on any hard drives connected to the PC, so you really need to back up your data somewhere else first!!!

Look... I have an external drive and one internal one with two partitions.

Wait, so you're telling me I can boot from XP, wipe everything, and then just install Windows 7? Is that really how this works?

Yeah, you totally can! It’s pretty straightforward—it’s basically like starting an XP install, and once it finishes wiping the drive, you just pop out the disc, shove the Windows 7 one in, and give the machine a quick reboot. Then you're good to go.

And if you want to be extra thorough, here’s the link for that hard drive wiping software. Just a heads-up though, if you aren't really a power user, maybe don't dive in headfirst without doing a little digging on Google first to see what it actually does. You definitely want to know how to handle it before you run it.

So, has anyone actually found a fix for this whole CoD4 PunkBuster nightmare yet? I’m running Windows 7 RC at the moment, and honestly, I haven't even touched CoD4 in ages just because of this damn PunkBuster mess and how Windows 7 handles things.

Well, yeah! Even when you're installing Windows 7, there's a built-in option to ☕FORMAT
anyway!

I just finished installing Windows 7 on a brand-new rig I put together earlier today.
Which motherboard monitoring software are you all running? I’ve tried three different options and only one actually worked—MBM 5 isn't cutting it for me, mostly because it lacks that handy feature to show temperatures constantly in the taskbar like the other one does.

I ran into another headache: I can't get the DVD that came with my Dell motherboard to behave—check the link, as it doesn't seem to be fully compatible with Windows 7. I tried launching the DVD in XP compatibility mode, but then the actual applications won't run properly; it feels like I'd have to manually trigger every single app through compatibility mode by digging through folders instead of using the main setup utility. I read somewhere that Dell stopped releasing drivers for Windows 7 RC, though it seems they might have only done that for their newer, high-end boards (see link here).

Does anyone happen to know anything about this?

As for the bugs—it’s honestly frustrating how that one issue used to pop up even back on XP. It was running smoothly at first, but now the Task Manager icon just won't show up in my notification area, and I can't seem to get it back no matter what I try...

I tried formatting with XP and then installing Windows 7, but it just wouldn't work. I ended up installing Vista first, and then Windows 7, which worked fine. It's probably an issue with the hard drive...

Does anyone know what the specific IP address settings should be for Windows 7? I'm using an Xfinity ADSL connection, but I just can't get the internet to load at all. It’s strange because my old XP machine works perfectly fine using automatic IP settings... so how do I get this one configured properly? Any help would be much appreciated!😕

I don't even know where to start with this guy. Honestly, just thinking about him makes my blood boil. It’s like trying to explain common sense to a brick wall, only the wall is somehow more reasonable. He’s just... he's something else, man. Absolute nonsense. kaže:
What’s the IP address for Windows 7? I’m running on Xfinity broadband but the internet just won't load. Everything works perfectly fine on my old XP machine using automatic IP settings... so how do I actually set this up? Help?😕

What kind of IP address are you talking about for Windows 7? Give me a break, man. You’re probably looking at your router's IP—it’s likely something like 192.168.1.1—and that’s what you need to be using if you want this thing to actually work. If you haven't hooked everything up right, nothing is going to happen. Seriously, go check your Windows firewall first; it’s probably just sitting there blocking everything like a brick wall.

just try turning off the firewall for a second... though honestly, you might be dealing with an ancient chipset where the network drivers didn't even install right in the first place. If killing the firewall doesn't do the trick, try hunting down the original manufacturer drivers and installing those instead!!

I don't know who this guy is, but I've had just about enough of his nonsense. As specified by:
What is the correct IP address configuration for Windows 7? I'm using an ADSL connection from Comcast, but I can't get any internet access at all. Everything works perfectly fine on my old XP machine using a dynamic IP... how do I set this up correctly? Any help would be appreciated.😕

Check your Device Manager to see if the network adapter is even being recognized. It’s highly likely you’re just missing the necessary drivers. 😉

Hey everyone,

Just one question..
I'm planning to pick up a new PC in about a month. I want it to have 3GB of DDR2 and an Nvidia GeForce 9600 GS with 1GB of video memory, which brings the total to 4GB of memory...
I also intend to install the new Windows on it.
Is it even worth it while it's still in beta? And would it be smarter to go with the 32-bit or the 64-bit version?

Thanks in advance.

( Actually, I'm leaning toward the 64-bit version, but I'll set up a dual boot with xpom... because let's face it, XP is still XP. 🙂 )

I've already answered this a bunch of times on this thread. I guess I'll go dig through a few pages back to find it. 😉
