Taylor Campbell4 said:So, you’ve disabled the keyboard and mouse from being able to wake it from sleep? Man, I remember seeing some page somewhere that listed every single thing that could trigger it—can't find the link right now though.

Got any other weird exotic gear hooked up to the rig, hardware-wise? Even though, honestly, you shouldn't have anything else... besides mice or keyboards.

If you're using sleep mode, go into advanced settings and kill hibernation. Then, hit the BIOS, look under hardware options, and disable everything that might be capable of waking it up from sleep.
Not to mention, I've read online that this stuff can be caused by anything from the motherboard down to the RAM, so... 🙄 I think you're gonna have to do a little digging.

Is it doing the same thing with both hibernation and sleep?

Maybe try changing the sleep state in the BIOS—you know, like S1, S3, maybe even S6 is an option.

Try heading down this path: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

Hah... thanks. Seriously. 👍
I'll give that a shot and let you know. 😉
But if I don't get to it today... worst case is tomorrow. 😉
BTW... I don't even use hibernation at all, 🤷 but I'll try that out and we'll see how it goes. 👍

Just realized (this is an edit...) that you linked me to sleep info for Windows Vista 🙄...
Was that just a slip-up or what...?

And... I don't have anything "exotic" left 😁 plugged into my PC (unless you count my Logitech X210 speakers as exotic).

Also, I found out that sleep in 7 is actually pretty buggy. ☕
Just type "7" instead of "Vista" in that search link... apparently everyone is having issues with sleep mode. 😉

Here are a few potential fixes for the sleep mode issue:

If you just swap "Vista" for "7" in that link... apparently plenty of people are running into sleep mode issues 😉

Yeah, I gave you the link for Windows Vista because really there's no need to tie it strictly to W7; it’s entirely possible the same issue exists on Vista (though it doesn't have to be)

Just like that song by Bruce Springsteen, some strange winds are blowing...
Who knows what the criteria actually are. 😁

Am I losing my mind, or did Windows Movie Maker just vanish from existence this week? 🤔

EDIT: Oh, wait, never mind—found it! It’s apparently still stuck in beta mode, and you have to install it through Windows Live Essentials.

Hey everyone, I have a question regarding an issue
I'm running Windows 7 and my computer is shutting down more frequently... first every three hours, now every two hours.
It’s obvious the Windows 7 Release Candidate builds are unstable, but what am I supposed to do until the final version drops in October? My system keeps crashing constantly.
Any ideas?🤷

No, the beta phase is over and your PC will keep shutting down every hour until August 1st when it stops working entirely... so save your data while you still can and switch back to an older OS...

It’s really on you if you didn't install the RC—which is perfectly functional and has been updated through March 1, 2009. You can still get your hands on it.

Regarding that specific issue, I might be mistaken, but I recall seeing some workaround online—something involving a registry tweak or a system file adjustment—that allows for upgrades between different sub-versions or releases of Windows 7. So, in Anali116's case, an upgrade to the RC might actually be feasible if their current build is lower than 7100.
Ultimately though, whether you run a clean install or an upgrade shouldn't matter much in the end.

If you're looking to get Windows 7 up and running, just grab the RC version; it works flawlessly.

PS: Also, I'm fairly certain there's a patch floating around the web to stop those periodic shutdowns—just give it a quick Google search.

So, this is what pops up when I run it through the command prompt—basically what that site is getting at...

EDIT:
But hey, that network stuff actually works, so no complaints there.👍

Thanks a ton! 😉

You're putting a space after the dash. Don't do that:

powercfg -lastwake

You have until August 20th to grab the W7 RC (build 7100) from microsoft.com—just keep in mind that official support, including all those necessary updates, will only run through March 1st, 2010.

So, I guess it’s finally happening... August 20, 2009, is officially the day W7 becomes the real deal 😉

Is anyone else running into issues with win 7 x64 on 4 GB of RAM? The system just freezes... maybe after a few minutes of use, or sometimes even right at startup. It happens constantly. I checked the memory usage and it seems fine, and it runs perfectly normally with 1GB, 2GB, or even 2.5GB. But once I hit 4GB, everything just locks up—even during the win 7 installation itself.😕🤷

Right... I also forgot to mention that it doesn't crash when running in Safe Mode...

So the RAM isn't fully compatible with the motherboard? I guess you should have run memtest86+ with all 4GB loaded in.

Here’s what the Memtest86+ results look like... It just stopped right here....

image

Also, when I first installed these RAM sticks, they gave me the same trouble they're giving me now; after a few restarts they supposedly "worked," but then I tried installing Windows 7 yesterday and ran into the exact same mess, except now they won't work at all...👎

By the way, I'm typing this from Windows 7 in Safe Mode, and it isn't crashing or freezing... I can't even adjust anything in the BIOS regarding the memory, so maybe there's some major issue with Windows 7???

Back again....

Motherboard:

Chipset: Nvidia GeForce 6100

Southbridge: Nvidia nForce 410/430 MCP

So, I installed the drivers for my GeForce 7300 Le and, naturally, the drivers for this Nvidia fucking chipset, and now the PC has been running okay for maybe half an hour...

Is it possible the chipset and the RAM were just fighting each other? Maybe installing the Nvidia driver cleared up the conflict?🤔 😕

If that's actually what happened, does it mean I can't use an ATI HD 4890 card because of this chipset issue? Because without the Nvidia chipset driver, the RAM keeps messing with me and either crashes Windows 7 or freezes everything...

Basically, will there be a conflict if I install the Nvidia drivers for the chipset and then install the ATI drivers for the HD 4890? If it's going to cause trouble, I'd rather just grab a GTX 275 right away; even if it's more expensive, at least I won't have these issues with the chipset, drivers, and RAM....🤷

You’ve got faulty memory. Figure out which stick is bad and pull it—just use your warranty if you still have one. If not, DDR2 isn't exactly breaking the bank these days.

And for the record, this whole thing has nothing to do with drivers 😉 for a bunch of reasons I don't feel like listing right now since I really need to get to sleep. The point is, it's not the drivers.

I've already done it three times! Three! I swapped the RAM three times and those bastards just keep handing me defective sticks...😠 And it's the same crowd at Best Buy where I bought my entire setup—computer, monitor, printer, camera, joystick, memory cards... everything. I've been a loyal customer and they still decide to screw me over with junk hardware...😠😠😠 I'm done messing around with them. I have a warranty... but what am I even supposed to say? Tell them the memory is screwing me again and show them a Memtest86+ screenshot? 🤔 Then they'll just take the stick back for "service," leave me without it for a week or two, and eventually try to hand me another dud...🙄 Maybe I'll head down there next week if I feel like dealing with their nonsense, and we'll see what they have to say...☕
Here they are... the geniuses: http://www.bestbuy.com/

Anyway, thanks for the advice...🙂😉
