wiredpilot30 said:So what exactly do you mean by "drastic"?

The full price for the Ultimate version is $320 or so $0.52, and honestly, over here it's pretty much the same $0.50

I mean, obviously I'd love a better deal, but this whole thing about "abnormal" price gaps is kind of hilarious... especially considering how much of a mess this country can be with these insane sales tax rates, I'm actually surprised it isn't even higher 🙄

What do you mean by full price though, are you talking retail or OEM? The prices are totally different if you look at http://store.microsoft.com/microsoft...7/category/102
Personally, I'd just love to grab an original key so I could install and register them like I bought the whole physical box... and I've already seen stuff like that on eBay for like $50 http://cgi.ebay.com/Window-7-Ultimat...item33571cc590 👍

I really think that would be the smartest way for anyone looking for genuine software to go

Personally, I’d be perfectly happy if I could just buy an original product key—you know, something that lets me install and register everything just like I bought a physical box. I’ve already seen plenty of those listed on eBay for around $50http://cgi.ebay.com/Window-7-Ultimat...item33571cc590 👍

I honestly think that would be the best way for anyone wanting genuine software to get a good deal.

Microsoft is pretty shady when it comes to this stuff. They make it seem like you have a choice between getting Windows shipped to you or just downloading it, but if you look closely, the price is exactly the same. Watch out.🙄

It’s just ridiculous.

thanks for the quick reply

That PowerCinem software is notoriously temperamental—it'll glitch out whenever it feels like it. In this case (as is often the case everywhere), even that famous, utterly useless little trick—"Run this program in compatibility mode"—won't save you.
Personally, I use progdvb for my TV setup, and I highly recommend it! 👍
My advice applies to anyone struggling with the bloated, buggy software bundled with these cards.
If Windows 7 has accepted the drivers and everything looks clean in the Device Manager without any warning icons... then the hardware itself should be functional.

Or, if all else fails, you might want to check here.

Hey there!

So, I finished installing Windows 7 Ultimate yesterday, and honestly, everything seems to be running smoothly so far—except for one thing that’s driving me absolutely nuts!

My router, which is hooked up via Comcast, keeps rebooting on its own. It happened twice already; for example, I’ll just launch Football Manager to start a session, and suddenly the router just shuts itself down and restarts out of nowhere. I have no clue why this is happening!!! Back when I was running XP, I never dealt with any of this nonsense. Now I'm wondering, is this going to be an issue once I start playing online games? Is there some setting in the OS I can tweak to stop this from happening?

Maybe you've got that power-saving setting turned on that just shuts down your network card entirely.
I mean—you should probably poke around in those power-saving options and see if that's the culprit.

So, looks like installing Windows 7 is a total bust. My ATI Radeon X1650 doesn't actually have dedicated drivers for Windows 7—I mean, they technically have some, but they're just the ones meant for Windows Vista, and the manufacturer explicitly says they don't guarantee they'll even work properly.
On top of that, my motherboard isn't playing nice with it either,
so unless I pull the trigger on a whole new build next year, this rig is just gonna have to wait.
Honestly, I really don't feel like dealing with the massive headache of backing up all my data and nuking my current Windows Vista setup just to find out half my drivers and programs are going to glitch out anyway.

According to the Windows 7 advisor, installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 on this subpar laptop wasn't exactly recommended, but I decided to give it a shot anyway. It has been a week now, and everything is running perfectly (except for some minor stuttering with the TV tuner card, but I'm sure that will be resolved eventually)...

Good day, everyone.

I’ve run into a bit of a snag and I was hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction. Does anyone know how to get Bluetooth up and running on Windows 7? I'm using an HP nx 7300, and everything worked perfectly fine back when I was running Windows XP. It seems obvious that I likely need to install some specific driver or additional software, but I’m honestly at a loss as to what that would be. If anyone has dealt with this particular headache before, I would truly appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance!

Connect to Bluetooth and other wireless or network devices

The HP Compaq nx7300 Notebook PC doesn't (yet) have the right drivers for Windows 7, even though your model officially supports only the Windows 7 Starter (32-bit) version.

Alright, I figured I’d chime in too, and thanks in advance for the help here.

So, look, my rig is pretty old—maybe 5 years old or so.
AMD Athlon XP 2600
1.91 GHz, (only) 512MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9550, motherboard: Gigabyte GA-7N400l-L

Since we can snag free licenses through MSDNAA E-Academy at my college, which means I could basically grab Windows 7 for nothing, I thought to myself... why not give it a shot? So while I'm waiting on the guys at school to send over the info, I'm just browsing around and asking around about Windows 7.
I guess what I'm wondering is, can Windows 7 even run on 512MB RAM? If not, maybe I should just go ahead and buy some more memory now.

Just to give you the rundown, my rig is pretty old now, maybe 5 years or so.
AMD Athlon XP 2600
1.91 GHz, and just 512MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9550, motherboard: Gigabyte GA-7N400l-L

Basically, I wanna know if Windows 7 can even run on 512MB of RAM, or if I should just go ahead and buy some more right now.

Man, that's practically gospel. 🙂 512 MB is absolutely nothing.

Here is what the official word says regarding the ATI Radeon X1650 and the ATI Radeon 9550:
Note: AMD’s DirectX 9 ATI Radeon graphics accelerators are not officially supported under Windows 7. If the user chooses to, they can install the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista graphics driver under Windows 7. Please be aware that none of the new Windows 7 graphics driver (WDDM 1.1) features are supported (as the Windows Vista level graphics driver is limited to WDDM 1.0 level support). Using the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista driver under Windows 7 is not officially supported by AMD, and as such AMD will not provide any form of customer support for users running in this configuration

Your motherboard doesn't support it either.
Is it even worth trying to upgrade this thing right now?

Honestly, you're better off just picking up a new build (something with an i5, DDR3, etc.). Personally, I'm gonna hold out until the beginning of the year—maybe components will drop in price once everything settles down with Windows 7.

@ Edward Parker2

I’m with velvetfalcon44 on this one. If you want to run the latest Windows, you’re going to need serious hardware. Don't bother trying to upgrade what you currently have; just wait until you have the time and the cash to pick up a completely new 🙄desktop
.
That said, definitely go with Windows 7. Personally, I think the Professional version is your best bet—Ultimate doesn't actually offer much more than that (link). ☕

Everything you guys mentioned holds some weight, but I actually managed to get Windows 7 running on this setup:

- AMD Athlon XP 1700
- 512MB RAM
- ATI Radeon 9200

Hmm... It seems like everyone is running into issues with those ancient graphics cards, so I'd bet it wasn't working perfectly for you either. I was actually doing some reading about those specific glitches here: http://www.driverheaven.net/windows-...on-9200-a.html Anyway, just last week the upgrade advisor gave me a bit of a scare by suggesting my GPU might be an issue, and I'm rocking a Sapphire HD3870...

So, you think it wasn't working perfectly? I'm pretty sure I know whether it was working or not, especially now that I've moved it to another machine:

- Intel Pentium 4 2.4
- 1GB RAM
- ATI Radeon 9550

Everything is running at 100%. If you don't believe me, feel free to come over and check it out yourself. I installed Windows 7 and managed to find all the drivers, even for this ancient graphics card. 🙂

🤷 I can't quite wrap my head around it, but alright. Maybe they just quickly patched those old drivers to work with the new OS... though I highly doubt that, it's just weird... super weird. 😬

So, I just finished installing Windows 7 Ultimate, and now I’ve hit a major snag—my printer is basically a paperweight! Every time I try to get the drivers installed for my HP 5940, I get this frustrating message saying it only supports up to Service Pack 2 and isn't compatible with any of the newer operating systems. I spent quite a bit of time scouring the HP website looking for an updated driver, but I came up empty-handed.
Does anyone have a clever way to bypass this issue or perhaps a workaround that might actually work?

Maybe give it a shot through Windows Update

Thanks for the replies, that’s what I figured (though this 'bible' used to be the space shuttle 🙂, I remember back when I was the only one in the house with a 19'' monitor, we didn't need a damn movie theater at home hahahahaha... just a sign that I'm getting old)

Anyway, nothing else to say.... enjoy yourselves and spread the love 🙂
Cheers
