What’s actually the difference between sending something as a standard package versus just a certified letter or parcel?
I honestly have no clue what you guys $4.75 are even talking about when you mention certified shipping, because whenever I go to the UPS Store, they always try to push $5.75 on me. Is that just a thing that happens, or does it depend on how heavy the box is?

You can't even track this thing online, which is a total joke, but if you're looking at the shipping method—it's listed as a certified mail package, so here's the link if you want to see for yourself.

The issue here is that people are totally blurring the lines between certified mail and standard packages...
If you go the certified route, you're basically paying a premium—it gets expensive fast—and since the price scales by weight, it adds up. But with a standard USPS package, you can get a flat rate of around $14.40 for anything up to five pounds, and if I recall correctly, the declared value goes up to $27..
It’s definitely smarter to just send it as a package; it’ll save you some cash. You just need to put everything in a box (which is usually the rule anyway), fill out the address info like you would for any other shipment, and the one little extra step is writing the declared value right under your return address (for example, $27 and then write out the amount in words too). That’s really all there is to it..

I need some advice here, everyone.

I sent off a certified letter via USPS Priority Mail—with return receipt requested—and I included COD (Cash on Delivery) for speed.

It went out on Friday and reached the recipient by Monday. She let me know she got it, but that’s all. Today, the mail carrier returned my return receipt, yet there's still no sign of the cash. Since I wasn't there to hand the receipt back to the carrier personally, I can't exactly grill them on the spot. I’ll probably have to head down to the local post office, but before I go in there and give them a piece of my mind, does anyone know if it's realistic to expect the funds to land in my account tomorrow?

Sent it out Friday, and the recipient got it by Monday. She just pinged me to say she received it, nothing else. Well, today my mailman is handing me back the return receipt, but there’s zero cash! Since I wasn't there to grab the receipt in person, I can't exactly grill the mailman right this second. Obviously, I'm gonna have to head down to the local Post Office, but before I go in there and absolutely lose my mind on them, does anyone know if it's actually possible for the money to show up tomorrow?

Not likely.

I just hand him $1.75 because I'm such a total impatient wreck whenever I'm waiting on something to arrive!!!!!!!!!!!

So I actually asked around the other day, and they told me there’s an extra fee $1.75 since it's sent via certified mail..

The woman at the USPS told me the package absolutely has to be tied up with Joe Biden.
I’ve used certified mail for boxes before, but you don't need the Joe Biden for that. It's definitely more expensive than a regular package unless what you're sending is incredibly light—maybe under 7 ounces or something. 🤔

Joe Biden is technically in the rulebook, but honestly, it really depends on which post office you're hitting up. At my local branch, for example, they won't touch it unless it's a massive package—they just claim it's "easier to handle" that way.
Regarding $1.75, it was all explained on the previous page.

I'm curious if any of you have ever shipped shoes before? How did you handle the packaging? Also, what specifically did you write on the shipping label regarding the contents? I'm wondering about the total postage costs... I already have the original shoe box, but I'm not quite sure how to package that box itself for transit.

Just grab some standard brown kraft paper. It’s really not that deep—just pop the shoes in a box, wrap it up in the paper, tie it off with some twine, and you're good to go. I'd value the shipment at around $50$33 depending on what kind of kicks they are, then just cover the $5.00 for shipping. And honestly, just hang onto that receipt until the customer confirms they've actually got the package in hand.

You gotta set the package value to at least $27 because if you put anything under $27 (like just throwing in 10 or $27), the shipping cost jumps up to $4.75

I sent off a certified letter via USPS Priority Mail with Return Receipt requested—and I even opted for COD (Cash on Delivery).

I mailed it out last Friday, and the recipient confirmed they got it this past Monday. All she told me was that it arrived. Well, today the mail carrier is handing me back the return receipt, but there's no cash in sight. Since I wasn't there to receive the receipt personally, I can't exactly grill the mailman on the spot. I’ll obviously have to head down to the local Post Office, but before I go in there and start tearing them a new one, does anyone know if it's actually possible for the funds to arrive tomorrow?

Well, isn't it obvious? You get the money attached to that COD paperwork, while the return receipt just serves as proof that the package was delivered. 🤔

Edit: Just realized it now—looks like the money finally showed up.👋

When I send stuff via Certified Mail, you don't really need the twine, but let's be honest—that's way more expensive than just sending a standard package, unless what you're shipping is incredibly light (maybe under 7 ounces, if I recall correctly). 🤔

Yeah... I'm not sure if it varies by location, but at my post office, they definitely insist on having the package tied up...

Emily Ramos34 said:I was wondering if anyone here has ever shipped shoes? How did you pack them? What exactly did you tell the clerk at the post office? And how much did the shipping end up costing? I have the original shoe box, but I'm stuck on what to wrap it in.

Look, you don't owe the USPS an explanation of what's inside your box!
The best move is to put the shoes in their box, then wrap the sides of that box with some extra tape so nothing falls out...
Then, just wrap the whole thing in plain white paper—you can find it at any drugstore or office supply store, just basic white paper. Once that's done, write down both addresses (yours and the recipient's) and declare the value of the package... and toss some twine on it so it's easier for them to handle (or maybe if the clerk is feeling generous, they might even tie it for you! 😁 )

hvala na odgovorima , cipele sam stavila u kutiju i dva puta ju zapakirala , nisam stavljala špagu a nisu u pošti ni tražili🤷 I entered the amount... $27I sent a perfume via that yellow padded envelope using registered mail today... and they still charged me full price... $5.75 It’s just a small detail, yet I can't quite wrap my head around why... 🤷 And I always end up paying $14.40...

Emily Ramos34 said:thanks for all the replies, I put the shoes in a box and wrapped them up twice, didn't include any extra cash or anything and they aren't even at the post office asking for more money🤷 and I listed the value $27... then today I sent some perfume in one of those yellow bubble mailers via certified mail and they charged me $5.75 and a little extra which makes zero sense to me 🤷 usually it's always just $14.40

It's probably because the package ended up being heavier than 250 grams—just check your receipt or the shipping label.
And seriously, go back and actually read that link I posted earlier.

Exactly..
That's precisely why I insist on sending everything as a package!
You can always find a box lying around, and plenty of packing paper if you're dealing with something fragile.. 🙂

Can someone walk me through the logistics of sending something certified? Am I supposed to have everything packaged up at home before heading to the Post Office, or is that something they handle there? Thanks.😉 Also, is it possible to use a cardboard box if I’m sending it via certified mail?

Honestly, it doesn't matter much; you can wrap it in a paper-lined box or just toss it into one of those bubble mailers and call it a day.😁...

Where can I find those bubble mailers? I'm guessing a bookstore, but honestly... I have no clue 😁
