So, I decided to finally pick up some protein powder today... I've never actually bought any or used it before... I really want to build some muscle, but I'm totally lost on which ones to grab for my first time—any recommendations? I'm 17, and I was wondering if protein supplements are going to mess anything up or if they're actually bad for your health...
and how much do they usually cost in dollars.
THANKS

Since you aren't really keeping up with this thread and you're only 17, protein powders could definitely be bad for your health—if you were an adult, it wouldn't be such an issue...😁 Also, why exactly do you need protein for muscle growth? Are you hitting the gym or playing a specific sport?

THANKS

One protein is a buck. If you grab five, you get one free—standard math. 😁

A buddy of mine picked up that chocolate drink over at Walmart for $10 and swears he doesn't need anything else—and honestly, you can actually see the progress on him.🤷

So, is whey strictly for the immediate post-workout window?

And what even counts as a "training session"? I mean, when you’re a total maniac lifting weights for two hours straight, or even less... that’s always been a bit of a head-scratcher for me.

velvetraven said:I should probably chime in here too. I picked up some Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey in that vanilla chai flavor—you know, the one with the cinnamon kick. It’s actually pretty solid. Grabbed it for $59 at Walmart.

What exactly is it that everyone’s raving about with these proteins? Is it actually the flavor, or what?
So, my 11-pound tub of isolate from ProNutrition finally showed up today. Honestly, it’s just more protein powder—nothing groundbreaking there. But I guess I’m sticking to my guns about supporting American brands whenever I can. 😉

What's the word? Is this thing actually gonna take off?

The internet is basically overflowing with specialized sites dedicated to training, fitness, and bodybuilding. If you're looking for info, just type one of those three keywords into a search engine and start reading. It's all out there.😉
By the way, you’re probably interested in anaerobic training. Most experts say you shouldn't be pushing it for more than 45 to 60 minutes at a time. I guess that's just how it goes.

I’m honestly not sure where the best place to ask this is, so I figured I’d just drop it here since protein and carbs are pretty much inseparable anyway.😁
So, I picked up some dextrose... but now I'm stuck on how to actually use it. Do I just mix it with water, or what? The label says it can be used as a sweetener for basically anything, but my real question is about post-workout timing. How should I be taking it then? And does anyone know the right ratio—like, how much powder per how much liquid? I’m really looking for some guidance here because, I guess, I don't have any experience with this kind of thing.🙂

You should head over to MuscleTech.com and read up on the specific product I mentioned—the Lean dessert protein. Honestly, I think the name pretty much speaks for itself regarding what it is and what it’s designed for.
I'm usually not a huge fan of American brands,😁 but MuscleTech is definitely my top choice.

I haven't personally tried the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey yet, but all I ever hear is praise for it. I have used their Liquid Amino, though, and I can tell you right now it's significantly better quality than the liquid amino options from Weider or Dymatize.
Twinlab tastes absolutely disgusting, but man, do you see the results! Of course, the pricing here in the States is killer; a liter at a local pharmacy runs you about $100. Weider is around $93, while you can grab Optimum through a site like Sportika for about $17!

Honestly, it's pretty straightforward—just take a standard scoop of whey, say about 30g, toss in 50g of glucose, mix the whole thing with some water, and drink it down.

Thanks, but I usually just get my protein from whey shakes... can I just mix glucose with water? Like, if I have about 8 ounces of water, how much glucose should I toss in there?

What's the goal with the glucose? Honestly, you'd probably get better results just grabbing a couple of bananas or something with actual substance.

Just a heads up though, plain whey alone isn't actually packed with much protein.

I wouldn't go overboard with the whey, though—you don't want to end up dealing with hyperproteinemia.

As for the glucose, honestly, just mix it into your water however you like! It doesn't really matter if you're using 8 ounces or maybe a larger bottle.
The thing is, you don't really pick your glucose amount based on how much water you have; it’s kind of the other way around, I guess.

Alright, please let me know if anyone actually knows their stuff here.

So, I'm fifteen. I row every single day for about an hour and a half to two hours. Weighing in at 165 lbs... I haven't touched protein supplements yet, so I'm wondering which one would be the best bet for building some muscle mass. Thanks.

Honestly, you can't beat proteins from animal sources... they're definitely the way to go.

Whey protein... look, just drinking whey isn't going to magically build you muscle. It's not some kind of miracle powder.

So, besides eating right, what else is actually required?

Also, anyone got a link for this whey stuff?

Hold on. Now I'm confused. Are we talking about total food volume, or the specific macros—protein, carbs, etc.—inside that food?

Food equals proteins, carbs, and fats.
It all depends on what you're actually putting in your mouth.

Your best bet is to head over to an American bodybuilding forum and just read through the entire FAQ from top to bottom.

Fine, thanks... so you're saying protein alone won't do much if my diet isn't totally balanced?

Precisely. 😉

So I just picked up some Prostar whey for the first time... don't wanna look like a total newbie here so I'm asking: what exactly does "scoop" mean in terms of actual measurements? Also, do I really need to grab a shaker bottle or can I just toss it in a glass with some milk and stir it up 3 or 4 times a day?... I'm not hitting the gym or anything, just doing pushups and boxing training, so will whey even do anything for me?.. thanks ahead of time😉
