I knew before I even left home that Rihanna was going to be the highlight of the festival, and honestly, nothing about today changed that. She was incredible, though I wish she’d played more of those slower, soulful tracks—that’s usually what draws me to African American artists. That whole bit where they introduce the band and do covers of other African American musicians didn't really do it for me either. But everything else up to that point? Total bliss.

Kraftwerk would probably hit me harder if I were one of those people acting all hyped because I was seeing them for the first time. When I saw them in Denver about a year ago, it was perfection, but now I think I’m just suffering from that "second concert syndrome" where the follow-up never quite lives up to the original magic. Doesn't mean I didn't have a blast, though. I really did.

I never really got YYY, so I listened to three songs just to be polite, shrugged my shoulders, and went to grab a burger. I followed Franz by half-interest; they seemed decent enough, but they just didn't land right after Rihanna and Kraftwerk, and I don't get the sense they bring much extra flavor to their live sets.

Right now I'm just vibing to some Outsider Art, and after that, I'll probably just wander aimlessly from stage to stage for the sake of it, unless something actually blows my mind...

Oh, and I'm also curious about how Black Market went. A few months back, I caught a snippet of their rehearsal while I was snacking on some local BBQ in the other part of the house, so I kind of regret not giving them a real listen in return...

🤷

sweet, looks like it won't rain in Miami 😬

Honestly, I still can't wrap my head around how a festival with this many massive headliners and such a killer lineup sells fewer tickets—especially at a cheaper price—than a single Depeche Mode show. I don't know what people in this country are thinking. 🤷

Can someone who has already parked their car inside tell me what the hourly rate is? It’s somewhat urgent since I’m heading out in two hours... Thanks.

Regarding the concert, Lily—it was fine, but nothing special... The Fear was excellent, actually better than on the CD; Not Fair and Smile were good, but I wasn't familiar with the rest. The atmosphere wasn't particularly intense either, and I was standing right at the front rail... I thought it would be more exciting.
Rihanna - I only heard one song, and it didn't really do much for me; the tracks I listened to on YouTube were superior.
Kraftwerk - OMFG, absolutely incredible. This might sound ridiculous, but I hadn't even heard of them before the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and I didn't know a single song (I actually recognized one during the set, though I didn't realize it was theirs), but it was simply brilliant. There were quite a few songs that I loved, which is rare for me, especially given how "unconventional" their music is. Their performance was superb; the four of them behind their laptops was simple yet effective.
yyy - I listened to a few tracks between Kraftwerk and FF; I heard Zero, which was the only thing that caught my interest. 🙂
FF - They were great; they clearly put in a lot of effort, learned quite a few American phrases, and had fantastic rapport with the crowd, which truly surprised me. My only grievance is that they played their biggest hits right at the start (Matinee, Walk Away, Do You Want To, Take Me Out). The set lasted an hour, followed by another thirty minutes, lol. Overall, they were excellent.

Buy some smaller machine-washable shirts for the weaklings. $33 👋

Everything after Kraftwerk has just been a boring downhill slide. Honestly, I’d rather just stay home and watch Isa and Borgire. 😬

Huh? I saw that t-shirt booth earlier, but I honestly couldn't wrap my head around this one. 🤷

P.S. Oh, and one more thing—is anyone actually planning on uploading some photos online?

There's no way security is that tight—it's a joke.🙄

I'm just asking where the gaps are. If you guys were actually there, you'd know.😁

I am simply asking where the vulnerabilities are; those of you who have actually been there should know. 😁

I believe your only real shot at swimming across is if you have an inside connection helping you smuggle the goods... or you could try carrying a backpack over your head and changing once you're through... after all, it's an island and that bridge is their only link to the mainland... Alternatively, if you want to make a grand entrance, just rush in and disappear into the crowd...

🤷 Look, man, just do the math:

There were so many tracks that totally clicked for me, which is pretty rare because, let's be real, it’s hard to find music I actually like on the very first listen, especially stuff this "weird." And the performance itself? Just top-tier. It was just those four guys behind their laptops—so simple, yet so damn effective.

$1.00 it’s about twenty bucks an hour. I’m actually planning on driving in today too, but it’s such a pain that there isn't really any parking right by the entrance, so you'll probably have to leave it by the small lake near Aquarius or a bit further out by the big one near where the old Jure used to be, though I have a feeling those spots will already be taken... If you think you're going to be staying for a while, I'd honestly just park over by the Middle area and take the fifteen-minute walk to the festival, which is what I did yesterday...

Grab a half-day or full-day pass for $3.25
When you hit the entrance ramp, don't bother smashing the ticket button. Just walk straight up to the guy in the booth, ask for the day pass, pay him, and you're golden. You can come and go as you please until the pass expires, so you basically just breeze right through

Honestly, I'm pretty glad I skipped the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this year 🙂

Rolling Stone says:
"The track 'Radiohead' delivers incredibly catchy, anthem-like melodies, while simultaneously serving as a grim warning about the threat of nuclear catastrophe by listing various sites of past nuclear disasters."

I was actually kind of surprised by how decent the organization was. The only thing they seemed to forget is that human beings occasionally need to pee and take a dump, and usually, people prefer to do that in designated spots.

The undercover cops were honestly hilarious. Watching them nodding along during Kraftwerk while keeping a side-eye on anyone lighting up a smoke was pretty funny. The guys in uniform, though? Not so much.

Lily Allen was just... meh. You go in expecting some catchy pop fun, but instead, you get this frustrated, pretentious British post-adolescent who seriously thinks she's dropping truth bombs when she says everything's fine as long as you're losing weight. And man, the amount of obnoxious drunk fifteen-year-olds was unbearable—just screaming names at each other like 'AAAAA, Baaaarbaaararaa, you're heeeeere!' I swear, security had to tell them several times that the concert is happening in front of them, not behind them. They were basically nesting the whole time until someone finally snapped with a super tense, 'One more move like that and you're dead!'

😬

Kraftwerk wasn't really my vibe, to be honest. It’s all that dehumanization stuff. It's fun, sure, but also kinda creepy.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were the highlight of the night. They lived up to the hype, even if they played a little shorter than I wanted. I was hoping for maybe two or three more songs. Also, it blows my mind how crowds lose their damn minds over confetti. It's just confetti. Whatever.

Franz Ferdinand actually sounded better than the first time I saw them. Mr. Wrong nailed it. Just a solid, really good pop band. I was actually surprised by how aware they were of the space and the moment—they really knew how to play the room.

All in all, day one gets a ***1/2, which is actually a pretty great score.

That's about it.

Lily Allen is absolute perfection. I don't care what anyone else thinks... she’s just the best!

And honestly, to all those people dragging her and comparing her to some pop starlet from a Hollywood hit song—she actually sang a perfect little diss track about you guys yesterday...
