What is wrong with you? 😁 I definitely haven't been doing that this year. Maybe two years ago... 😢

I think I go out more than any of you guys, actually. I mostly just try to kill time with Skype meetings and coffee chats.

Alright, so who actually voted for The Stone Roses instead of David Bowie?🙂

Look, for me, this follows right after that massive "punch to the eye" movie—you know, one that could've easily been one of the top 5 or 6 masterpieces of the 2000s.
Honestly, wrapping everything up with a cliché gangster showdown felt way too easy—it just feels like a cheap way to lean into those old tropes about how bad Americans can be.

It’s obviously me... though I have a feeling I’m not the only one out there feeling this way.

Man, talk about a nail-biter right until the end! (Seriously though, some of you guys jumping in just before the finish line... do you owe me money or something? 😁 ). Anyway, I’m stoked that The Stone Roses took the popularity vote given how tough the competition was. Not that I would've minded a tie, honestly—there are definitely other albums out there that earned it 🙂
.
I'll drop the next theme tomorrow. 🎉

I think I'm basically checking out from all of you at this point; I'm trying to spend as much time as possible in Zoom meetings and tea parties instead.

Whatever, good for you 😛

Could someone who hasn't voted yet—and wasn't planning on voting for Bowie anyway—maybe cast a vote for him in my place?😁

I wasn't even going to vote at all—I guess I just lost interest with all these multiple votes, and the sheer number of suggestions kind of thins out the competition... plus some other stuff making it hard to keep up with the thread—but if I were, I feel like I couldn't vote for anyone else but Bowie. Not in this heat. Though, I have to admit, that Stone Roses album is great, and that Psychedelic Rock Band album is definitely a cult classic here in the States.

Edit: actually, never mind, the voting window closed. 🤦

The Stone Roses are actually pretty solid. I’ll probably be blasting some young Americans for the next few days too, and maybe a few other tracks from the list. 👍

I finally logged onto the forum at exactly 9:57 PM tonight. That’s when I caught a glimpse of the Album of the Week and realized I had completely blanked on it... talk about cutting it close! There were literally only three minutes left on the clock...😁

It just feels too easy to wrap everything up with some gangster shootout to lean into those European stereotypes about how bad Americans are.

Yeah, I get that, but I don't agree. Personally, besides Breaking Waves, Larson's work might be my favorite.
I'll write more about this somewhere else, I don't know where. Maybe there's a specific thread for this movie?
(I think he used 'Life on Mars?' in Breaking Waves, maybe during that last intermezzo...)

Anyway, I was hoping this Bowie album might make the cut, but I don't really bother voting for myself anymore—it's just not my thing (not since those first few albums). I guess it's more important to listen to whatever most people want to hear that week, because then we actually feel involved.

And for anyone who actually decides to give Young Americans a full listen—as WW suggests—my advice is to listen late at night. 🙂 Every single one of the eight tracks on that album is executed perfectly. I picked out both singles since they're the biggest hits, though I can't decide which is better... personally, 'Right' and 'Can You Hear Me' are my favorites.

I'm still stuck in last week, diving through Prince's discography. Thanks, fass. 🙂

Dogville have you ever heard of it? 🙂

In that movie about what Jack built for the House, there’s this whole theme 🙂

Wow, what a lovely surprise! It's such a great album—I haven't even touched it in maybe 7 or 8 years. I always had a soft spot for Blue Moon and Where Knock is open Wide. Honestly, I can't even remember how I first found them; I think I stumbled upon them through some indie compilation back in the day.
I just gave it another spin twice, and it still hits the spot perfectly. Cornfield is special too, and In Every Ford is just pure 90s vibes—plus The Dirt Eaters... though, to be honest, I never would have associated this sound with you! 😁

This pick is perfect for road trips, especially made of Ston 🙂

@Lisa Davis46/">@@Lisa Davis46 Just checked out your Last.fm profile to see if you were actually telling the truth about Prince.😁 Man, blasting 1999 for five hours straight is impressive—though I’m guessing you had work going in the background. Honestly, I think I'd lose my mind trying to focus on that for five hours straight.😁

Man, I actually won the vote for the album I picked. 😁

My album ended up with 6 votes. 🙏 It was basically a toss-up where someone else could have easily tied me, but nope. Nothing. At least metal didn't take the win this time. 😁

EDIT: Edgar Allan Poe gets zero points. 😲 Nobody even realized I recommended that album last time just to mess with people—it was literally on one of those "worst albums ever" lists. There’s a whole saga involving Philosophy of the World. Frank Zappa thought it was a masterpiece, and so did Kurt Cobain. Eventually, the critics came around and started praising it. 😁

Honestly, I think I’d pass out if I actually tried to sit there and focus on it for five hours.😁

Of course I'm telling the truth. It wasn't happening alongside work every single time. 😁
I guess '1999' is actually exactly what you described in terms of its theme.

😁

I actually stumbled onto them through that kaleidoscopic, monochrome music video the Quay brothers did for Are We Still Married. Honestly, the collab makes total sense—HNIA are basically surrealists at heart. "Mouth by mouth" creates this kind of metaphysical poetry by blending extreme collage with a layer of fantasy, myth, or dreamscapes (shoutout to Guy Davenport for that idea). Think Ernst or De Chirico. From there, it was just one quick associative leap to the stuff in my profile—now my album choices don't seem so random. 😁
"Cornfield" is the standout on this one, especially the lyrics. Their next album, "Stars on Esp," is a bit more polished, but still killer—especially that metamorphosis trilogy built around the "I can't live at home in this world anymore" motif.

There’s a slim chance more than two people actually bother to vote for this or give it a listen, but I honestly don't care. 😁 Those who do decide to take the plunge will discover just how insane the melodies, riffs, and lyrics really are, considering the entire thing was crafted by a single individual, Alexander von Meilenwald.
