Scout Niblett - The Calcination of Scoutt Niblett (2010)

Things were getting heated, but things feel lighter now! 🎉

I love pretty much everything she puts out, but this one? This is the peak. It's raw, it's stripped back—nothing extra, nothing wasted.
She handles the instruments, vocals, lyrics, and basically everything else herself. Oh, and Steve Albini helped out too.

+

The album's cover shows Niblett brandishing a blowtorch as if she's held one all her life. "It was a stunt," she clarifies, laughing. The picture is a comic take on the process of calcination, which is "a technical term for heating," she explains. "The version I am referencing is the first stage in alchemy. There's the actual, physical making of gold, in a chemistry way, and then there's the psychological, which is what I was drawing from, really. It's just about heating something up in order to get rid of what's not needed."

"Welcome to my self-made sweat box. This is where I take it all off. I've got to sweat it out, I'll cook those monsters out -- I'm not coming out of here until my soul appears" is a line that appears in the title track of The Calcination of Scoutt Niblett, and if there is a theme for this album, this is it. The word "calcination" refers to burning metals into calx -- the ashy substance that remains. It’s appropriate here.

Man, I was actually planning on posting today, but I see there are already 10 people ahead of me. Guess I'll just wait until next week then.

Man, it totally slipped my mind until today, haha. I figured, hey, let me go check if there’s maybe one more free slot left, but of course, no luck. There's another one next week 😁

Just spinning some Public Image Ltd. right now. If I weren't a doctor, I’d probably suggest checking out one of their other albums in a few weeks... maybe even a different one! Calling all doctors out there—fire at will! 👍

Not enough voters. It’s fewer than what was suggested for the album.

Dammit, I completely blanked on this because things have been absolutely chaotic on my end. It’s a real shame; the whole conversation was starting to pick up some serious momentum, and now it feels like we're losing that spark. 👎

It’s pretty standard, really. I guess everyone feels like things are getting crowded right now, just before the December lull kicks in...

What exactly do you mean by "picking up" right now, and what kind of "lull" are we talking about in December?

I would’ve handled everything by now if I hadn't been stuck dealing with some idiotic self-isolation that forced me to basically move from room to room inside my own house. If things had stayed normal, I would have voted 😁

Uh, you doing okay? How much longer are you stuck in isolation?

Something here for those with a really specific kind of sweet tooth...😁

😁😁

I just got Rice this year! Just spotted Amanda Robinson4! On the topic of that sound !!—specifically with People. I can’t say the album didn't really hit the spot, even if it still feels a little too over-the-top for me. Too brutal? I'm not sure—but hey, Disneyland Can wait. 🙏Well, they gave us a fair warning right there in the album title—I’m over here sipping Martinis and Misantrophy, but hey, you guys can do whatever you like!
Maybe move it over to a more fitting thread—like Neofolk?—so we can actually dig into it. I’m really curious to see what everyone else thinks, and honestly, I'd love to hear your take on it too!

I’ve listened to Scoutt Niblett before, but I never really clicked with it—though honestly, this is pretty good! Bargin totally hooked me right away... It gets a little intense at times, I guess, but man, those distortions and that raw sense of directness are just killer. It actually reminds me a bit of early PJ Harvey—really captures that same vibe. 😁 Anyway, thanks Lisa Davis46 for the suggestion!

Giles Corey 👍 This stuff hits just as hard as Deathconsciousness—real high-quality depression right there.

Out of the ones I haven't checked out yet, Orange Goblin and Raul Seixas are totally hitting the spot—I'm absolutely obsessed with Portuguese!
