Yeah, I remember, it was all about that 'Fass sound'! Honestly, this might be one of the best topics we've ever had here. 🙂
We’ll probably post a list of the recommenders somewhere soon, so you guys can go bug them to drop the individual intros. 😁

I've got another little nugget for you all because I just found myself rewatching something yesterday...

Danny Baker's Great Album Showdown (that three-part NBC series from 2013) — specifically the second episode focusing on the art of the pop album.
One of the guests was Boy George, and when they asked him at the end to pick his top three favorite albums of all time,
his selection—alongside the inevitable David Bowie—was this:

Bob Dylan - Desire

...which strikes me as a bit unexpected. Honestly, if you had asked me, I never would have guessed that Bob Dylan would be
one of his absolute favorites. It just goes to show, you really can't judge a book by its cover.

Oops... my bad. Totally my mistake!

What I meant was that I would never actually suggest Michael Jackson - Thriller. I just don't go for those massive "mass appeal" albums, you know? It’s like trying to pick a mainstream blockbuster when you're looking for an indie gem. And for the record, I wasn't even talking about Can.

They are honestly light-years away from ever being anyone's go-to "greatest hits" reference.

It turns out Michael Jackson - Thriller actually features eight tracks on the album—which includes six different singles.
Even with those massive 50-plus million sales, it still feels like an automatic "greatest hits" album to me.

I see a lot of people are pretty unhappy with this week's lineup. I feel for you, I guess. Personally, though, I’m actually feeling really happy—both about last week and this one. But especially this week. That rotation was insanely strong! And the variety was great. If I had to pick just a few standouts from the menu (which was tough), it would be these:

Aksak Maboul - Onze danses pour combattre la migraine (1977)
That was a pretty wild ride. A little unpredictable, I guess, but I actually kind of dig it!

Bob Dylan - Desire (1976)
I guess Bob Dylan - Desire might still be my absolute favorite, right up there with JWH. Maybe it’s because it’s such an outlier—it feels like a totally different version of him. It’s easily his most passionate work, and honestly, it sits completely outside his usual style when you look at his massive catalog. I definitely went through a phase where I just listened to the whole thing on repeat, over and over.

Can - Tago maga (1971)
This is easily one of the top five albums from this era. It’s a total masterpiece—timeless, really, and way ahead of its time. Honestly, can you even believe this record is fifty years old? It's wild. I'm hoping the OP might drop some more insights on it, though. I haven't actually read much about this specific album myself, I guess.

Gal Halid - Hajde da se drogiramo (1990)
This really blew me away. I hadn't known much about Barrett's little projects before, but man, he never misses. Even when he veers off into some gritty, dark underworld vibe, he just dives straight into the deepest parts of human nature and himself, and he’s totally willing to lay it all bare for us to see. To me, he’s the only artist truly capturing that raw, dirty, full-blooded blues of this country. I guess others had their moments like that, but I've always mostly seen them as more mainstream, sunny-side-up types.

Harumi - Harumi (1968)
Not bad at all. It’s got that chill, Japanese summer vibe going on... I guess it worked for me!

Michael Jackson - Thriller (1982)
This album is honestly great. I’ve played it through a few times now, and it just doesn't get old. Before someone suggested it, I hadn't actually sat down and listened to it as a full album, though I definitely recognized a bunch of the tracks. Even if it is a pop record with massive mainstream appeal and a huge budget behind it, I guess it still offers something more than that.

Both Tool and My Bloody Valentine albums were on the list here, but there was no way I could vote for all of them. I set a limit for myself at four. None of my top picks are actually among these options...

Honestly, this place is the main reason I’ve slowly started coming back to the forum. It’s where I actually felt like having the drive to write, dig around, and listen to new stuff. I’ve discovered so much through certain members here—way more than I ever expected. It’s been great. Anyway, I wanted to check in and let everyone know that I have to freeze my activity for a bit. Between writing and moderating, life just kind of happened, and I need some space to deal with things. I still have a few albums from my old rotations that I really want to revisit over the next few days—stuff like Coltrane, Talking Heads, and Townes Van Zandt—so after that, I’ll officially check in with the bosses to take my break. 🙂

Look, if you’re asking me, I’d probably lock this thread down for a while. Stotka was great. It really was. But I guess all good things have to end—or at least take a breather—while they're still actually good. In the beginning, there was this incredible energy here, right up until maybe the last thirty albums or so. Everything was just constantly building. People were debating with such intensity, both in this thread and in the individual topics. But lately? It’s just gone dry. The curve is dropping, there's no juice left in it, and honestly, I don't see how I can contribute anything meaningful anymore. So, I figure it's better not to force it on my end. Maybe that’s just how it goes, with waves and cycles and whatever... but it feels like the pulse has been missing for quite some time now.

The whole "Album of the Week" concept used to actually mean something. Lately, some of us—myself included, I guess—have been lagging behind, posting intros late, and now everything feels messy. We’ve even got one album just sitting there unclassified and waiting. It’s also pretty telling that lately, people are starting threads for albums that never actually got that official "Album of the Week" tag, so they don't get any of the visibility the selected ones do. It’s a shame, really, but maybe it's just proof that the whole idea is slowly losing its impact. If I were giving advice to Anderlon, I’d suggest adding a new prefix—maybe a yellow one?—just labeled "Album." If that's an option, why not? It might help those threads actually float to the surface instead of getting lost in the sea of everything else.

Album themes are actually pretty great because you can always circle back to them whenever you feel like it. People who never even participate in our weekly album threads will eventually stumble upon them, and after a few years... we’ll have this massive archive. I guess the intro to each thread matters, but what really counts is the actual discussion the music sparks. That conversation can be reopened and expanded on any time.

So yeah, those comments above got me thinking, because at the end of the day, just opening new threads isn't the whole point. It's not like we want everyone to end up with just five posts like poor Terence Trent D'Arby did recently, but still. Anyway, I'm stoked for the hundredth album—I'm so glad it ended up being Can! I really hope it gets people talking. Though, honestly, I bet a Bob Dylan album could do the exact same thing. Maybe that'll prove that the whole "Album of the Week" label is kind of losing its meaning anyway.

Hugs to everyone, looks like I've finally got some again! 🙂

What an absolutely insane, genius masterpiece of an album! That rhythm section sounds like it’s coming straight from the far reaches of Jupiter! How the hell did they even pull this off? The way Karoli & Schmidt structured this is just pure, unadulterated musical madness!

I feel this intense urge to rewind everything back to '97, when I finally got my hands on those Spoon releases of Tago Mago and the Unlimited Edition. I owe everything to the universe for orchestrating that exact moment. Huge thanks to MTV for that '95 programming, and to Viva Zwei for putting that "Oh Yeah" video on air right when I needed it. Czukayev’s precision basically performed brain surgery on me, and for that, I am eternally grateful—all while getting lost in every single beat delivered by Liebezeit behind the kit.

Here’s my two cents regarding the Album of the Week situation, since we’re clearly in the middle of an "airing of grievances" right now. The quality started tanking the moment we opened the floodgates and allowed an unlimited number of albums per week. We really should have found a middle ground—maybe 7 or 8 albums a week if 5 feels too small—because otherwise, the whole thing just burns through content way too fast. Let's be real, there aren't even more than 7 or 8 people consistently participating in this thread anyway.

Second off, if you suggest something and it gets approved, but then you fail to actually post the thread in real-time (before the next poll), you should honestly be banned from making any suggestions for the following two weeks.

Thirdly, I’m actually really attached to this thread. It genuinely makes my day when one of my picks gets chosen, and I truly enjoy the process of writing those intros. It’s a shame that because there are so many different threads, things don't stay active; I feel like there’s a tiny burst of energy around Thursday, and then everything just goes dead until the next Thursday rolls around.

At the end of the day, we could just wrap this up at 100 posts and try again sometime this fall, maybe with some slightly stricter rules in place.

Honestly, one hundred is such a great milestone. I was actually thinking along those same lines as Lisa Davis46—maybe we should just put this thread on hold for a bit. I started this whole thing right when things were starting to pick up around here, and man, it’s really gathered such a killer crew over time! Beyond just breathing some life into the forum, this whole section feels totally solid now, regardless of which albums we're talking about...

But look, I can't really promise how active I'll be moving forward either. It looks like I've got some big life changes coming my way, you know? New scenery, new challenges, all that good stuff...

And if we’re going to keep the thread running properly—you know, with the polls on schedule and using all those moderator tools—I’m honestly not sure if it’ll stay at the same high level it’s been so far.

So, we're waiting on that hundredth album! But like I mentioned before, feel free to start a new thread for any record you're loving... just please don't call it "Album of the Week." 🙂

It sucks that we're saying goodbye just as things are hitting a hundred, but I guess that’s life—everything good stays (too) short 😢
I really should have been more active here—I mean, I was around from day one, but then I just kind of drifted away way too soon

To whatever comes next, and sending all the best vibes to Lisa Davis46 and Amanda Robinson4 🙂

So, you got this? 😁

Anyway, joining in on the congrats—big thanks to the mods for keeping this thread alive over the last year. 👍It popped up right when everyone was getting shut down in real life because of COVID, forcing us all to go hard on the virtual hangouts. Now we’re left with this massive archive of like a hundred albums, plenty of which barely have any comments, so there's definitely enough to dig through for the upcoming summer days and nights.

I don't really have anything specific to add here, so I guess I'll just take this chance to encourage everyone who feels like writing to keep the momentum going in our other threads. If there are albums you didn't get to mention or ones you were thinking about suggesting, feel free to drop them in the album recommendations thread or maybe the musical obituaries section. You could also just post within the specific band or artist threads—most of them have their own dedicated space anyway (though looking at the last list, Dylan, Bon Jovi, Tool, and Michael Jackson definitely have their own). I know the mods have mentioned before that you can start a new thread too—just skip the "Album of the Week" prefix—but I suppose that really depends on how much you think an album might actually interest the rest of the community. For those lesser-known names, if you aren't feeling a whole new thread, you can always chat about them here.

There are also plenty of other interesting topics that haven't been very active lately, even though they seem perfect for some decent discussion—whether it's about punk, classic rock, old school American rock, or even country. As a quick example, the thread about 80s hair metal bands has some really great posts to catch up on, even if I wasn't personally a huge fan of that era or certain genres from back then. I was just scrolling through the last few pages, and honestly, if I went further back, I’d find a ton of threads that have just been sitting there gathering dust for months or years, despite having so much potential for good conversation.

To put it simply, it would be a shame if everyone just vanished from this forum just because this specific thread is being archived. There's plenty of other places to hang out and talk music. We'll still be here reading and commenting 😁

👍 That’s how you do it!

I'm all for locking this thread—honestly, if this topic is meant to make a comeback, it'll happen when the time is right. 🧐
You guys did an awesome job, Lisa Davis46 and Amanda Robinson4; it was such a blast being part of this—it’s actually pretty refreshing to realize just how much I still don't know about music sometimes 👋 😁
I know we’ve been hanging out both here and off-forum, but I’m sure a fresh crowd will show up eventually and bring their own vibe to the group.

I feel like I've shared pretty much everything I had to say on this sub-forum, but hey, who knows... I just hope we don't end up dealing with the same kind of chaos we went through last year.

Lisa Davis46 said:Can doesn't have anything to do with this decade. 😁 It’s definitely not his era.
Even if I hadn't put the list together, I'd still know which suggestion was his.😛

While we wait for whoever picked the winning album to finally start a new thread...
I noticed Dennis Hall41 hasn't shown up yet—he has a habit of pulling these disappearing acts.

Anyone want to do the honors and give us an intro for Metallica? Who actually voted for them?

Well, I'm back. I was feeling pretty burnt out—both mentally and from the music—after grinding through work these past few weeks. This whole American capitalism thing is a killer.👎

What, were you guys planning on locking the thread? Screw all that—while I was gone, I'll be right here holding down the fort.🕺

Honestly, just tell me you found someone to hook up with after getting vaccinated instead of whining about life's big turning points. Music was probably just your refuge because you couldn't find anyone to sleep with at Coachella or in some parking lot.😁

Man, I am seriously howling at the Moon—let the music do the talking:

Let’s keep this momentum going if enough of us are still around... I’ve got an album by Ipčet Ahmetovski that absolutely rips. Even if Amanda Robinson4 isn't feeling up to it, her involvement doesn't have to be some massive undertaking... We can drop the poll whenever it makes sense...
