Where is your hosting server located?

It looks like Orbis, based on what I know. You can actually verify this quite easily by just doing a quick Google search to see where their domain is registered.

inetnum: 195.29.89.0 - 195.29.89.255
netname: ORBIS-US
descr: Orbis Internet Services
country: US

Which browser are you even running? Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, or Chrome? Try switching it up. Clear your cache, hit refresh.

Before you start hunting for a technical fix, you actually need to provide some basic information about your setup. 👍

Speaking from experience, 99.9999% of the time, the issue is on your end. No insult meant.

Fine, let's call everyone in quotes "geniuses," since apparently we aren't all tech experts.
Not everyone is a computer whiz, regardless of age, which is why it comes across that way. I assumed that if my characters weren't scrambling on four other forums—but they are here—that maybe it was an issue with the site or the settings. It doesn't happen every single time, either. And while there were login issues earlier, I'm not necessarily blaming those. Other people had trouble logging in too, so suddenly everyone is a "genius."

Kevin Garcia70 said:Now we have these self-proclaimed geniuses acting like they own the place, though I think most of us aren't exactly computer wizards ourselves.
It seems some people are quite a bit more educated than others regardless of their age, which certainly explains why things end up looking this way. I actually went through a brief period where I thought the issue might be rooted in my own settings or perhaps an error within the forum itself, especially since I noticed my characters weren't displaying correctly here like they don't on the four other platforms I frequent. It isn't a constant struggle, mind you; it happens sporadically, much like that recent headache I had when I was having intermittent trouble logging in—though I suppose I shouldn't link the two issues too closely. It wasn't just me, either, as several others were running into those same login glitches, which seems to have given everyone a sudden burst of unearned expertise on the matter.

Let me try putting that a bit differently.

Kevin Garcia70 said:I was wondering if anyone else has run into this strange glitch where my typing starts behaving erratically. It’s quite a peculiar sensation when you're mid-sentence and suddenly the letters just begin to scramble themselves, jumping out of order as if they have a mind of their own—for instance, I am attempting to type this right now just to see how the system decides to mix things up. On top of that, the cursor has started blinking with this intense, distracting intensity. The most frustrating part is that it isn't a constant issue; it seems to happen exclusively on this specific forum, and even then, it only hits me sporadically. Some days, everything works perfectly smoothly while I'm typing, and then, without warning, the whole experience becomes a bit of a mess.
I find myself experiencing this strange delay where I hit a key, have to pause for a moment, and then finally type the next letter. It’s quite a frustrating little hiccup to deal with. Why on earth does this happen?

That was a very kind way to ask.

jadetrucker43 said:You really are one of a kind; I don’t think anyone else out there deals with a situation quite like yours. 😁

It seems he was truly stuck without a way forward; perhaps if he had phrased things a bit differently, he could have avoided such a difficult realization altogether.

Kevin Garcia70 said:🙂Haha, it honestly feels like we aren't even allowed to mention having a problem anymore! It’s as if everyone here has reached some sort of state of absolute perfection. If that's the case, maybe we should just scrap this entire section of the forum altogether. I might as well just go ahead and finish what I started.🤮

And that is an answer that actually offers some real value.

--

Now, regarding that technical hiccup you've been running into—have you by any chance tried clearing out your browser cache? It’s one of those annoying little quirks that tends to pop up on quite a few websites and forums lately, where things just don't render exactly as they should because of some leftover data lingering in the background.

To really get to the bottom of this issue, we first need to pin down exactly which web browser you're using. I know I mentioned this before, but it's a crucial detail for troubleshooting—so, just to be absolutely sure, could you let me know if you're running Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Chrome, or perhaps Safari?

It’s highly probable that you're running into one of these three scenarios, so if you wouldn't mind giving these steps a shot and letting me know if they clear things up, I'd appreciate it:

Firefox: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/...%20the%20cache
Internet Explorer: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...learcache.mspx
Chrome: http://www.technipages.com/google-ch...ear-cache.html

No harm intended at all, I'm just trying to be helpful! 👍

To being perfectly honest, I don't think that will really solve anything, especially since quite a few people still struggle with vBulletin while sticking to Internet Explorer. From what I've gathered over the years, my best advice—mostly for the sake of your own computer's security—is to simply make the switch over to either Firefox or Chrome.

Grace White66 said:I still don't get it, and I haven't found a clear explanation. It’s all about the bottom line. Apparently, there’s software—someone wrote code specifically for this forum—that you have to buy. And you need servers to run it. Some glitchy setup that constantly crashes. 😬
Okay, that part isn't even the main issue.
The real question is: why does this thing even exist? Is it purely a money grab?
Advertising. But what about everyone else? Are the moderators, site managers, and admins all just working for free??

Has anyone actually researched how effective advertising on a forum like this even is? I ask because I can barely remember seeing a single ad here. I once accidentally clicked on a Gerber baby food link. That was it. When I come here, I come with a purpose; I'm looking for something specific. 🤷 If everyone is like me... then honestly... I'd say forum advertising is just throwing money down the drain.

Furthermore, how can people work for nothing? (Look, I know what volunteering is, but you usually have to be either completely insane or a college student for that.)

Does Reddit have any other reason for existing besides pulling in ad revenue?
Can you actually read the pulse of the nation here? Can marketing experts, PR pros, or sociologists draw any meaningful conclusions from this? Because logically, they should be able to...

Also, a question prompted by what I saw happening over at Rid; I wonder who decided to "clean house" on the forum and why. So what if a thread gets started? No one is losing money over it. ☕ The point is, if you want people to hang out here, you need a friendly atmosphere where they actually want to return to socialize. Starting new threads is just part of life.

If the logic is that the site is so spammed that new users (new market niches) won't bother showing up, forcing a total reset, then fine, I get it.
But I still don't understand what motivates the mods to do all this if they aren't getting paid and their bosses aren't breathing down their necks with threats of being fired.

A thousand times, why? 😬

Interesting point:
-The whole point of a forum (this one or any other) is human conversation.

-Yeah, some people will never click a single ad on the internet, while others will.
(Side note: I agree with you. I think advertising is often just a waste of cash for people who think they're making a profit... I certainly don't think seeing an ad for Bud Light means I'm suddenly going to go out and buy a Bud Light... but online, it's easy to see if ads actually work... you can track clicks and sales data to see if it's actually doing anything.)

-You have 1,800 posts on this forum and you're asking who has the time? (You obviously do—you're either a student, totally unemployed, or heaven forbid, both! 🙂). Besides, it's not just one moderator; every sub-forum has several.
(Think of it like a hobby, you know? Like a car or a motorcycle, or those other things you swap for two hours of phone calls and chatting every day... 😍 that's your motivation right there...)

-The "pulse of the nation" is measured by people at agencies like Gallup... and I doubt the people they survey have much in common with the population of this forum.

I tried posting a link to a local news outlet earlier and got flagged. Then I used a TinyURL to mask it, just to get hit with the same thing. It wasn't until I switched over to Bitly that the system actually let it through. Is there some sort of blacklist somewhere detailing which sites this forum decides to censor?

If this platform actually starts turning a real profit, I can't help but wonder if the moderators will see any kind of compensation for their efforts. Don't get me wrong, volunteering your time to keep things running smoothly is a noble enough pursuit, but let’s be realistic here—nobody can play the role of the unpaid digital janitor forever without eventually feeling the burn.

I think he just lost his mother. My condolences to him.

Quick question: how many posts have been deleted, banned, or scrubbed from this site since it first launched?

Got another question for you guys.
How do I fix my image size so the avatar actually looks clear?
The issue is that even if I upload a photo that takes up a quarter of the screen, once it’s shrunk down to the avatar slot, it becomes practically invisible. Was that clear enough?

I’ve got one more question, but nobody seems willing to give me a straight answer. Don't get me wrong, please.

I'm wondering about this whole "Mr." crew—Mr. White, Mr. Orange, and the rest of them. How are they admins when half of them haven't even been active for five or six years, yet they're sitting on 10 or 20 posts? It’s like if someone joined a local subreddit in Chicago two days ago, dropped 20 comments, and suddenly became a moderator. That wouldn't fly here, right? Did the head admin just hand those roles out personally?🤷

Thanks for the reply.

Steven Allen9 said:I have a quick question for the group: does anyone happen to know the total number of posts that have been deleted, banned, or otherwise removed from this forum since its inception?

Based on my many years of navigating various online communities, I haven’t actually seen that happen before. If I recall correctly, the feature is called "Pruning," which essentially involves clearing out those ancient threads that nobody looks at anymore, simply because they tend to clutter up the interface and slow down the site's performance. This kind of maintenance isn't done on a set schedule; it might happen once a month or perhaps once every decade, depending entirely on whether the site administrator feels like taking on the task.

Steven Allen9 said:I have one more question for you.
If you're looking to make sure your profile picture actually looks sharp and clear once it’s set as your avatar, there are a few little tricks to getting that sizing just right. I remember back when I first joined one of those large tech forums, I spent way too much time uploading high-res photos only to have them turn into a blurry mess because the site's compression was so aggressive. It can be a bit frustrating when you want your digital identity to look its best! The main thing to keep in mind is the aspect ratio and the specific pixel dimensions required by the platform. Most sites prefer a perfect square, so if you upload a rectangular shot, the system might crop it awkwardly, cutting off your face or making everything look tiny and indistinct. To get that crisp, clear look, I usually recommend resizing your image to the exact dimensions requested—often something like 400x400 pixels—using a dedicated editor before you even hit the upload button. This keeps the software from doing its own messy scaling, which is usually where the clarity gets lost. If you center your subject well within that square frame, you'll find that the final result is much more legible and polished.
I was just thinking about how even if you upload an image that takes up a full quarter of your screen, once it gets shrunk down to fit into that tiny avatar slot, it becomes almost impossible to actually see anything. I hope that makes sense and clarifies what I was getting at!

I’ve found that the best way to handle this is to first check the specific dimensions and file size limits allowed by the site. Once you know those constraints, you can just jump into Photoshop or even a simple program like Paint to create an image at that exact scale. My little trick is to use the "Save for Web" feature in Photoshop so I can manually dial back the quality settings; doing it that way ensures the image looks crisp and clean once it actually uploads to the forum.

Jose Ruiz2 said:I also have just one more question lingering in my mind, though it seems like I can't quite get anyone to give me a straight answer. Please don't take this the wrong way, as that certainly isn't my intention.

I’ve been wondering about the whole "Mr. White," "Mr. Orange," and the rest of that "Mr." crew lately. It seems a bit strange to see them holding admin titles when they haven't really been active for five or six years and only have a handful of posts to their name. To put it in perspective, it would be like someone joining a local community garden in Chicago, showing up for just two days, making maybe ten or twenty small contributions, and then immediately being appointed as the head coordinator. In any normal organization, that wouldn't happen, right? It makes me wonder if the head admin personally hand-picked them for those roles regardless of their actual activity.🤷

Thanks so much for getting back to me.

It’s quite clear that those individuals could only have been appointed by an administrator, given that only an admin holds the authority to grant such privileges to other members. I suspect they might be reluctant to explain their presence here, though honestly, I can see why; on a forum with such a massive membership base, why would anyone want to broadcast sensitive security details or disclose exactly who holds administrative status? I might be overthinking this, but it feels like asking those types of questions is essentially poking around in the private business of the site's security team. To put it simply, the most logical explanation is that the admin brought them on board. If we didn't have a clear distinction between admins and regular users, we'd likely run into chaos—imagine waking up to find half the forum wiped out overnight, forcing a 24-hour system rollback that would end up deleting some of those lovely posts you wrote. It would be a total headache, really. 😁

The only reason those people have admin status is because an admin is the only one with the power to grant permissions to other members. Honestly, I doubt they’ll even bother answering why they're here. Why would anyone on a massive US forum want to leak security details? Why certain members get admin rights while others don't? Maybe I'm overthinking it, but asking those questions feels like a direct invasion of the site's security privacy. The simplest answer is that an admin made them. If we didn't know who held the keys, half the forum could be wiped out overnight, and we'd be stuck rolling back the entire site by 24 hours just to recover posts you specifically wrote. It's a mess. Long story short, 😁.

No, I was just wondering how those people became admins when they don't even have ten posts and haven't been active in years...

Thanks for the reply.😉

Joshua Ramos14 said:Just check what the max dimensions and file size limits are for avatars. Then, whip something up in Photoshop or even just Paint at those exact specs, and crank down the quality slightly—if you use Photoshop, the "Save for Web" option is perfect for this. That’s how you get it looking crisp on the forum.

Thanks for the tip.

As for all the deleting, I think The Scotsman was wiping out historical threads. A bit overkill if you ask me..

If a thread actually manages to be useful, it’s pretty unlikely they’ll just delete it—more likely they'll just merge it into something else.

As for everything else, I thought Jessica Nelson4 gave some pretty solid answers. 🙂
