nimblepilot17 said:Hey, I’m asking for a friend whose period is running late. It’s usually off by about 10 to 15 days—it’s rarely on schedule, usually at least a week behind. About 20 days ago, she went in for a color Doppler ultrasound, and her OB-GYN told her everything looked perfectly fine. Now, her period is late again by about 10 days, but when it finally showed up, it only lasted a single day, and there wasn't any actual blood. Instead, it was more of a pinkish-brown discharge. What could be going on here? Does she need to go back for more tests? She’s 23 and hasn't had a Pap smear yet, though she does see her doctor regularly. Usually, her periods last about 5 or 6 days.😕

The part that’s bothering me is whether that was even a period or just some random discharge.🤷

It was just discharge—stubborn thing. She asked me to look things up online since she doesn't have her laptop right now, and I'm having a hard time finding anything helpful.

I realize this is completely off-topic for this thread—and I apologize for the derailment—but I’m honestly at a bit of a loss and could use some advice. I’m dealing with incredibly painful cramps right now and, unfortunately, I don't have any over-the-counter pain relief like Advil or Tylenol in my medicine cabinet at the moment😢. Does anyone happen to know of any other ways to manage the pain😕

Applying a heating pad to your lower abdomen usually helps me quite a bit.

I deal with pretty painful and heavy periods, and lately, I’ve been needing to pee all the time during my cycle. I guess you wonder if the increased flow and the pressure could be causing that frequent urination?😕

You can bet on that. 🙂

You aren't going to get much relief doing things that way... For next time, my advice is to keep some NSAIDs on hand—something like Advil, Motrin, Aleve, or Bayer Aspirin—and take them the second you feel even a hint of discomfort. A lot of women make the mistake of waiting until the pain is unbearable before reaching for a pill. By then, unfortunately, it’s often too late... once those prostaglandin levels spike in your bloodstream to trigger the cramping, the medication struggles to catch up and actually work effectively...

nimblepilot17 said:She actually asked why, claiming she’d dealt with frequent inflammation quite often. Apparently, her doctors told her to hold off on any Pap smears while there was active irritation—specifically mentioning a yeast infection. But she hasn't actually had an infection for a few months now; it’s been clear ever since she stopped using those daily liners.Do you really think the doctors were being unprofessional just because they didn't perform a Pap smear on her?

Absolutely, a resounding YES! I’m convinced I have the absolute worst gynecologist on the planet, but honestly, I haven't made it through a single checkup without a Pap smear. I know plenty of women who ended up in the ER for absolutely nothing because of her incompetence—I even had a friend who nearly lost her baby during her second trimester because this doctor failed to treat an HPV infection in time. But hey, at least the Pap test actually got done.

I'll throw in some Bentyl and Naproxen for good measure. 👍

My last period was back on February 23rd, and I haven’t seen a thing since. About a month ago, I dealt with some intense ovarian pain followed by a single day of brownish discharge, but that was the end of it. I actually saw my OB-GYN right before my last cycle and everything checked out fine, and my thyroid levels came back normal too. My cycle usually runs about 40 days anyway, and there have been a few times in the past where I skipped a month entirely, much like what's happening now. I'm just hoping it starts soon because the suspense is starting to wear thin. Between the breast tenderness and this constant feeling of bloating, I'm just waiting for some relief 🙂

Is thirty-five days considered the absolute upper limit for a menstrual cycle? 😕
My OB-GYN told me that anything up to forty days is perfectly normal, yet I keep stumbling upon data suggesting thirty-five is the cutoff... so now I'm left questioning everything. 🤷

To be honest, my cycles have always seemed excessively long—I’ve been averaging about 38 days ever since I stopped taking birth control pills, which was two years ago now. 😕
And this most recent one? It stretched out to a full 43 days. 😲

A cycle can range anywhere from 21 to 50 days. 👍

I finally decided to kick the birth control habit back in August. My cycle started out predictably enough, but after a five-day delay on the second round, things just spiraled into total chaos, and now I’m sitting here a month and a half late. Honestly, I’m almost looking forward to the day it actually shows up; there’s this dull ache in my ovaries right now that makes me think maybe, just maybe, something is finally settling into a permanent rhythm rather than this endless uncertainty.

It feels like the older I get, the lighter my periods get, which is wild since I’ve barely even hit my twenties yet.
Now they only last about two days, but they still hit me like a freight train—sometimes the pain is so bad I end up in the ER because I actually pass out.
To make matters worse, I've been told I have a retroverted uterus, and I can't help but wonder if that's what's causing all this chaos.

Oh... hang in there, dear—I know exactly what you're going through.

Well, they’ve finally become regular—but they're getting smaller by the day.

My periods used to run about four or five days—nothing too crazy, really.

The one before last lasted about three days—and this most recent one barely hit the two-day mark... though I did have some pretty intense pain to deal with.

I'm honestly stumped—everything else seems totally fine. I use protection, I don't take any pills... and there’s no sign of an infection.
Everything’s back to square one—all five of them.

I guess... is this actually verified? Maybe?

I wonder if this would actually help ease my mind. I guess I’m just sitting here waiting for my period like it's some kind of miracle. It's already been 39 days, and my cycle usually doesn't go past 33.
So, I've been doing IVF and all those other treatments for the last six months... but now I'm on a break from everything and I think I might be running late. I just took a test, but it was negative. I guess.

I guess I’m feeling pretty worried. I'm just afraid things might get complicated later on. And honestly, it feels way too early to go see my doctor.

Sorry if I shouldn't be starting my own separate thread here, maybe the mods can just move this if it's in the wrong spot, I guess?

So, okay, I'm 22, and my period has been super irregular since I was 13. Like, really weird. There were even two times where I didn't get anything for three whole months, and once it was two months, and then—boom—it just comes back normally. I went to see doctors a few years ago and everything checked out totally fine, no cysts or anything like that. But my cycle is always like 35-40 days... well, I never know exactly because it's almost always late. And oh man, almost every other month I get these absolutely horrific cramps where even Advil or an injection doesn't even touch the pain. It's awful.

My husband and I have been married for a year and a half now. We were being careful until January (well, we were careful before marriage too, haha 🙂), using the withdrawal method, but since January we've actually been trying to make a baby! 🙂
Nothing so far, though. Every single time it’s either a negative test or I just get my period. I got it on Feb 14th, then March 15th, then April 15th. I was honestly so happy that things were finally getting regular, assuming I wasn't pregnant or whatever.

But anyway, today is May 23rd and... nothing. Zilch. I took a test on the 17th and it was negative. 😢
Then last night, I noticed some brownish discharge on the toilet paper and just a little bit on my underwear. I figured, okay, my period is finally here! But so far, there's nothing else, not even a drop.
Last month when I got it, it was so weird—if I hadn't seen it on my underwear, I wouldn't have even known I started, which has never happened in my entire life! I didn't have any pain at all, and it was more brownish than bright red blood.
I thought maybe it was just a false period and that I might actually be pregnant, but nope, it lasted five days just like usual.

I know you can technically have a period while being pregnant, but the test says negative!!
It's negative, but I still haven't gotten my period!
I mean, I know it's probably just stress, or maybe this discharge is just the start of my period, but it's never been like this before, so I have this tiny, tiny glimmer of hope that maybe I am pregnant and the test just isn't showing it yet because it's so early!!!

I know everyone is gonna tell me to just take another test, and okay, fine, I will! But I really wanted some advice or... I don't know, stories from people who've been through this? Because I'm seriously freaking out. I'm scared it'll be harder to get pregnant because my cycles are so irregular—at least that's what I've heard. What do you guys think about that?? And I also read somewhere that brownish discharge right when you expect your period could mean something is up with my ovaries that makes it hard to conceive. 😢

I don't even need to say how much I want a little one. 🙂🙂

Based on everything you’re saying—and I mean everything—it sounds like you might be dealing with PCOS
When was your last OBGYN visit, and how often do you actually go?
Ever had your hormone levels checked?

I'm in the same boat—know a ton about this stuff, yet somehow feel totally clueless

A test can easily come back negative if you just did it too early

If you really think you're pregnant, you should get a blood test for beta hCG
You can go through your doctor or just pay out of pocket—you can usually get results in about $53

If that beta level is over 5, then yeah, we're talking pregnancy
