I started my period today, but I’m feeling a little anxious because it’s coming out dark brown. Is that actually normal, or should I be worried?

Mine can be just as unpredictable sometimes when I first get her.

I wonder if you might be on any kind of medication? I’ve personally noticed this happening a few times since I started taking my pills, though it was never an issue before that.

Nah, I don't drink them. I was on them for about six months, but that was two years ago. They just didn't sit right with me.

Aha. In any case, if everything continues to feel normal, I really don't think you need to worry. Honestly, it’s happened to me several times—I panicked at first too, only to realize it’s just an initial hiccup before things settle back to baseline.

Laura Mendoza said:Right. Honestly, if everything keeps feeling normal from here on out, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Seriously, this happened to me a few different times; I panicked every single time, only to realize later it was just a temporary thing at the start and everything else turned out perfectly fine.

🙂 Everything is back to normal today, thanks so much!

I need urgent help if anyone has dealt with something similar!
I'm on my period right now. I was showering today when I noticed some tissue at the bottom of the tub. At first, I thought it was just a clot, but when I actually picked it up (!) it felt like a piece of flesh about 1.5 inches long. It wasn't washing away like normal blood clots; it was definitely tissue.
I've been searching online, and apparently, women say this can happen after giving birth if the placenta is still coming out, but I haven't given birth or even been pregnant!
Does anyone have any idea what this could be? This is the first time this has ever happened to me.
Also, just for context, my doctor ran some tests a few days ago and everything came back perfectly fine...

That’s totally normal. 🙂 During your period, the uterine lining sheds, and you might see different sized clots—it really just depends on how heavy things are getting. Sometimes the lining thickens more than usual, sometimes less, which dictates how much comes out.

Look, I’ve never been pregnant or given birth, so I can't speak from experience there, but you shouldn't worry. The only time you need to head straight to the doctor is if you notice you're passing huge clots constantly or if the bleeding gets incredibly heavy.

Look, I get that spotting is normal, but this wasn't just a little bit—it was a massive chunk.
Oh, melloworca6, what would I even do without you? You're always there to bail me out on every single thread. 🙂

melloworca6, seriously, what would I do without you? You’re always there to bail me out on every single thread. 🙂

Honestly, I've had those moments too where a larger piece comes out. It all depends on your cycle. The lining doesn't thicken the exact same way every month, so if it gets a bit thicker one time, yeah, you're going to see bigger pieces.

Don't sweat it, 🙂. I've definitely had times where a large piece came out and I nearly lost my mind. Then I ended up chatting with some girls online and realized this happens to pretty much everyone from time to time.

Sarah Bennett58 said:I experienced some similar bleeding episodes back when I was taking aspirin for pain management. Well, maybe not quite within twenty minutes, but give it an hour and things start getting pretty messy... Regardless, it’s probably never a bad idea to check in with a doctor (even if you don't think anything is actually wrong, of course).

Aspirin essentially dilates the blood vessels, which naturally ramps up any bleeding. It's just how it works. In fact, that's exactly why people dealing with circulation issues often rely on it.

Man, melloworca6, I don’t know what I’d do without you. You’re basically my lifeline on every single thread. 🙂

Sometimes the entire basal layer just peels off at once. If you took a scorching hot shower, that’s likely the culprit—though overdoing it at the gym can trigger it too.

Thanks for the input.
I didn't take a hot shower, though now that I think about it, I felt something strange happening while I was out in the city—it only actually came out once I was in the shower. xD
Gross, gross, gross...
But if it's normal, then fine.🙂

I am back again 😬
Here is the situation:

I was on birth control for two years straight, right up until this past summer when I decided to take a break. I took my last pill at the end of July, had one final period, and then nothing until November 11th, when my cycle finally returned because my gynecologist prescribed Duphaston. It is now December 29th and my period has vanished once more 🙂. Trying to get an appointment with my doctor is a total lottery; I haven't been able to reach anyone the last few days, so I am looking for some insight here. What should my next move be? My intention was to restart the pill—partly for contraception and partly to regulate my cycle—but I am concerned about how much my hormones have shifted. I am unsure if I need to stabilize my cycle before starting the pill again, or if the pill itself will handle the stabilization. Just to provide some context: even before I started the pill, my cycles were quite irregular; specifically, immediately prior to starting medication, I went two and a half months without a period..

Have you ever actually checked your reproductive hormones or your thyroid levels to figure out why your period is running so late?

I used to have totally irregular cycles—I’d go two or three months without seeing anything—and it turned out to be my damn thyroid. Now that I'm on medication for it, things have shifted, but they aren't perfect; my cycles just fluctuate between 30 and 35 days now.

Not quite. I need to head over to my primary care physician sometime this week, and I was wondering if she could provide the referral for that instead of Dr. Ginić.

Regarding thyroid meds? Yeah, absolutely. As for birth control, I honestly have no clue because lately, some of the prescriptions and refills that used to be standard for primary care doctors are suddenly off-limits—they could handle them just fine a few years ago. Just ask your doctor; you've got nothing to lose.

For the thyroid stuff, I know for a fact you can get those. I get all my medication refills, hormone scripts, and referrals to endocrinologists straight from my GP.
