Yeah, true. If I can't find anything this way, I'll just hit up some private labs myself.

Does anyone know the typical wait time for a vascular ultrasound or color Doppler of the neck arteries and limbs in Chicago? Or is there a hospital nearby where I might be able to get seen sooner?

Hey there!

Has anyone else ever felt the need to complain about an MRI report or actually ask for it to be re-read?
I’m talking about an MRI scan of my brain and cervical spine that I just had done over at Medikol.
The thing is, I’ve had this exact same imaging done three times over the last few years, so I have plenty of old reports to compare this one against. Usually, at Medikol, you’d wait a whole week just to pick up your results, but this time...
It’s just a few short sentences basically saying "no significant changes," even though the whole reason I'm getting this MRI is to track those tiny, "minor" shifts!
So, here's the deal: 1) they handed me the results immediately, and 2) the report is incredibly vague.

Does anyone know what my rights are when it comes to this kind of thing?

Does anyone have a rough idea of how long the waitlist is for a knee MRI around the Chicago area right now? And honestly, where can I find the fastest turnaround? I’m already bracing myself for the possibility of paying out of pocket for a private appointment, but I really want to exhaust all my options through insurance first...

My advice? Scan your referral, send it off to every provider in the area, and just take whichever appointment pops up first.

Over the last few years, I’ve had this scan done three times, so there's plenty of data for comparison. This time, the results were supposedly ready immediately after the scan—which is odd, considering waiting a week for reports at Medikol used to be the standard.
The actual findings consist of just a few brief sentences stating "no significant changes," even though the whole point of the MRI was to track those very "minor" shifts.
So, two issues: 1) the report was issued immediately, and 2) it’s incredibly vague.

What are my rights in a situation like this?

First off, why not just reach out to Medikol directly? Tell them you aren't happy with how they read the results and see what kind of solution they actually propose.

I just got my referrals for:

t4, tsh, tpo, tgat, psa, fpsa

I'm planning to head over to Rib tomorrow morning to get this done. I assume I can just walk in and handle it, but I was wondering if I need to fast for these tests? I'm not sure how long the wait times are, and since I'm driving all the way out to Rib, I'd rather not make the trip for nothing.

I don't think you can just show up unannounced, unless you're heading over to Brooklyn, but maybe I'm mistaken. 😉
As for thyroid hormone tests, you don't need to be fasting, but as for the other one, I'm not entirely sure.

I was at Rib last week seeing a GI specialist/hepatologist, and they sent me off for an abdominal MRI. I’ve got a follow-up scheduled in two months, but naturally, the earliest I can actually get into the MRI machine isn't until November. I made sure to fill out the intake paperwork specifically noting that the doctor needs those results by April to decide if surgery is necessary and to gauge the whole situation, and I attached my full medical history. The woman at the front desk told me a review board handles these requests and that they might move my appointment up based on that—saying they'd notify me five days before a new date. Does anyone have experience with this? What are the actual odds that they’ll somehow pull that appointment forward to line up with my April check-up?

Quick question!

If I'm trying to book my very first appointment with a specialist, is it going to be an issue if my referral says "Follow-up visit" instead of something else, like "Specialist consultation"?

Look, if it’s your first time seeing them, the referral should specify an initial consultation. For any subsequent visits, you'd call it a follow-up, but your insurance paperwork needs to show a 'new' referral to cover that second trip.

There’s actually a pretty good chance you can get that MRI done within two months, or maybe even sooner, at Rib. I know from experience.

If these new referrals have a date on them, do they really expire after just a month? I mean, is there any way to extend them?

Question: I need to get on the waiting list for Rib at the specialist's office, but they're backed up about 6 months... since the referral is only valid for a month, I don't really get why I even need to scan it just to sign up... ??
Should I just ask my GP if they can issue a referral without a date? Thanks

The referral still counts. As long as it isn't more than a month old when you actually make the booking, you're fine. Once you've secured the spot, even if the appointment is 6 months out, the referral remains valid.

Thanks a ton for the quick reply!
boldnomad45 said:That referral works out fine in this case. Basically, just make sure it isn't more than a month old when you actually place the order. Once the order is in, even if you're stuck on a six-month waiting list, that referral stays valid.

But what about those appointments where you don't actually need to book ahead? I mean, at those clinics where you just show up with your referral and get seen right away. My referral is dated January 7th. Does that mean... I guess it might mean she’d have to go back to the community dentist to get it extended if we don't make it in for the exam until next week?

Then it's useless.
