Hey, I was wondering if anyone here has ever gone through a private doctor outside of the US? I might have to head to another country to get this medication since it isn't covered by Medicare. It's not technically on the controlled substance list, but you still need a prescription for it.

Just have a doctor write you a private prescription.

That’s really the only tricky part, I guess. Like, you'd get your medicine in that other country, assuming you have a prescription stating it's just for personal use and all that. Maybe it's more of a legal thing, like how customs agents might look at it or whatever.

Who should I see if I'm worried about pernicious anemia? Also—any recommendations for specialists in New York City? Private clinics are fine too...

Your best bet is starting with your primary care physician to get a referral. You’ll likely need an internist or a hematologist. An internist covers a broad spectrum of issues, while a hematologist specializes specifically in blood disorders. Since any form of anemia is essentially a blood issue, a hematologist makes sense. Just a heads-up, one of them will probably send you to a gastroenterologist—a digestive specialist—because pernicious anemia can stem from an enzyme deficiency in the stomach that prevents B12 absorption, which is pretty common as people age.

Don't sweat it. Modern medicine has come a long way, and most vitamin deficiencies are easy enough to manage.😉

I'm not a medical professional, just someone who reads up on this stuff quite a bit. If I got anything wrong, feel free to correct me.

Typically, a hematologist isn't the primary specialist tasked with treating pernicious anemia. In most clinical scenarios, both the diagnostic journey and the subsequent treatment plan fall squarely within the expertise of a gastroenterologist, primarily because an endoscopic evaluation is often a necessary component of the process. Before any such intervention occurs, one must first undergo comprehensive laboratory testing to establish whether there is indeed a suspicion of pernicious anemia and to uncover the underlying reasons for that suspicion.

Can anyone give me a recommendation for a solid, highly skilled private gastroenterologist here in New York City? Also, what’s the consensus on Dr. Nives Tarle? I need to get an abdominal ultrasound done, and from what I’ve heard, she seems to have the best diagnostic equipment available.
Thanks!

Regarding a gastroenterologist—I can definitely recommend Amrusev (specifically Opacic, though I've heard good things about others there too).
As for Tarle—it depends on what you're actually after. If you just want a general check-up, she might be a bit pricey—but if you specifically need high-end imaging tech, then yes, go for it.
Personally, she left a really positive impression on me—very professional, great bedside manner, and her diagnostics are top-notch.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good GP in New York City or maybe near a suburb like Cleveland?
I'm also looking for a dentist in those areas who takes Medicare!

Thanks!

Tarle—I'm not entirely sure what you're looking for specifically. If it's just a standard checkup, they might be a bit pricey for you, but if you need high-end equipment for something specific, then yeah, go for it.
Personally, they made a really good impression on me—just felt very human, you know? And the diagnostic side was solid too.

Thanks so much!

I'm looking for some private practice recommendations in New York City:
- Cardiologist
- Endocrinologist
They don't necessarily need to be at the same clinic. 🙂

Hey everyone, if you could take a quick moment to fill out this survey for my best friend, it would be a massive help—she actually needs the data for her senior thesis... She’s digging into how a doctor's communication skills impact overall patient satisfaction, so she's looking for anyone who has been treated in an outpatient clinic or a hospital setting by doctors in any specialty, whether they're surgeons or non-surgical specialists.

Thanks so much in advance 🙂

I've been seeing Dr. Smalcelj (cardiologist) over at the Bates Clinic. I'm pretty happy with him.

Does anyone know if Dr. Ante Ivkosic from the Holy Spirit Clinic works privately anywhere else?

A ton of people on this forum have been hunting for a solid private Neurosurgeon in Miami, but nobody’s had any luck yet. 😢 Honestly, I’m in the exact same boat. If anyone actually knows someone decent, please hit me up—and I’ll do the same if I track someone down.
Thanks!

Maybe try asking at Saint Catherine Clinic, their New York City branch, Mayo Clinic, or maybe Ariter.

They don't all have to be at the same clinic, obviously. 🙂

Amrusev Bates Clinic, Saint Catherine Clinic, ABR, Phoenix, and Synthesis.
