The documentary is excellent, though it doesn't really focus on BOPE. They end up being entirely incidental to the overall narrative.

So, here’s my current take... I’ve already binged the sequel twice in just one week—and watched the first one once too!—and honestly, I am officially hooked on Brazilian cinema. I just finished watching City of God, and now I'm planning to dive into the Bus 174 documentary next.
Does anyone have any solid recommendations for other great Brazilian films? Ideally something from more recent years, and maybe something where the subtitles aren't a total nightmare to track down? 🙂 👍I’d really appreciate the help!

You really need to check out Pixote by Hector Babenko.

It’s an 80s flick—but don't let the era fool you; it still hits just as hard today.

Now, Central Station is also excellent, though it deals with a completely different set of themes.

I honestly had no clue this was even being framed as a "sequel" to Pixote—thanks for the heads-up. This forum really is an incredible resource for deep cuts; I need to get my hands on this one immediately. Looking at what happened to those kids from Pixote... it’s genuinely impressive how much they captured, yet it's just brutally, relentlessly real.

I’ve seen City of God before, and let me tell you, it’s not exactly a "feel-good" experience if you're looking for something easy to digest. 😉

City of Men is pretty recent—it's a decent flick, though maybe not quite hitting the same heights as City of God or Bad Boys II, but still worth a watch.

The sequel actually holds up, even though I was pretty skeptical when I first heard they were filming it. This one really goes after the entire system, whereas the first movie stayed laser-focused on the slums—which, honestly, is why I think the original was better.👍

I finally sat down to watch it yesterday, and I have to say: those overhyped American flicks about elite units—the ones starring actors who are vastly overpaid for playing special forces types in movies like S.W.A.T.—don't even come close to this.
It is an exceptionally well-crafted narrative. The acting is superb, the production design is immersive, and even the musical score hits all the right notes.
And that is exactly how politics ruins everything worth having.

The plot, the dialogue, everything about it just works... there isn't any typical American propaganda shoved down your throat... you don't get that tired trope of the noble Black character dying heroically in a side scene... or the saintly queer character swooping in to save the day... the movie feels almost like a documentary. I’ll admit, I was pretty skeptical when I first heard they were making a sequel, but this is it. A woman leaves her partner for someone else, even though she still loves him... he's the complete antithesis of a "beta" type... the father-son dynamic... the gritty reality of life in the city... 🙏🙏

This is basically a textbook example of where corruption leads. Honestly, the movie is 👍 for me—I think both the first and second parts hit different in their own way. It’s pretty obvious those folks in Brazil don't just kill it on the soccer field and dance samba; they make some seriously killer movies too.

Great movie. I honestly didn't think the sequel could hold a candle to the first one, but it actually managed to outdo it. Seriously impressive.

I'd say this movie has real export potential.🤷
I haven't met a single Brazilc who actually enjoys this flick (either one),
most of my friends belong to that upper-middle class bracket—to them, life in the slums isn't exactly riveting; they act like those neighborhoods exist in some different country altogether.🤷
I found Brazil beautiful, yet incredibly sketchy—you couldn't walk alone or even hold a camera without looking over your shoulder. Personally, I prefer India.
It's much more impoverished, sure, but people actually respect foreigners—tourists, even. Their faith keeps them from mugging people in the street for cash, jewelry, or cameras.

The sequel is actually great!

I went ahead and rewatched the first one just to get back into the right headspace, haha..

By the way, those special tactical units really do exist...
