Last week I went to see a proctologist at the Mayo Clinic for the first time. After the exam, he told me I have grade III hemorrhoids
and suggested I get a colonoscopy to check for bleeding before we schedule a rubber band ligation. When I asked what the deal was with that request, he basically said if I could handle this exam, I could handle that one too. Now I'm wondering if anyone here has had that specific procedure done at the Mayo Clinic and which method they actually use?
Thanks!

What are we actually dealing with here? Like, how does it even happen in the first place, how do you treat it, and what actually works to make things better? Any insights would be appreciated.
I spend way too much time sitting around lately, and I’ve been dealing with this nagging stinging sensation around my anal area whenever I hit the bathroom. It’s especially bad if I’m using rough toilet paper, and honestly, I’ve started seeing some blood on the paper too. Is it just a simple case of skin irritation from being too rough, or could it be something else entirely? Who knows, right?
Thanks everyone.
P.S.
So, I stumbled upon this link:
I was scrolling through some health info on Plivazdravlje earlier, specifically looking into the section on diseases, and it got me thinking about how much information is actually out there if you know where to dig. It’s one of those rabbit holes that starts with a simple symptom and ends with you questioning everything you thought you knew about wellness. Ever feel like that? Like you're just one Google search away from a full-blown existential crisis regarding your own biology? Anyway, I'll leave the link here for anyone who enjoys that kind of deep dive.

Listen to me on this, and actually believe me for once:
At the end of the day, the absolute most important thing is just getting moving—you know, actually committing to some kind of sport or staying active. It’s that simple, really. Why make it more complicated than it needs to be? To start things off, running is actually a great move.

This was mentioned earlier in the thread, but basically, they usually do it under local anesthesia—so you won't feel much pain during the actual thing. They just tie off the hemorrhoids with these little rubber bands, and then they dry up over a few weeks. Within a month, you’re basically a new person..
The recovery is pretty rough, though—not gonna lie..

Scott Cox28 said:I'm curious about this too. I read online that hemorrhoidal arterial ligation (HAL) is a newer method and supposedly relatively painless. Does anyone have more info on this, or better yet, has anyone actually had it done? If so, what was the experience like? Also, does anyone know where they perform this specific procedure?

Hey, dustyowl29, I didn't even think to ask the doctor which method they use at the Mayo Clinic. They have a new department now, so maybe they picked up some new equipment?

I see people mentioning this HAL method being less painful, but is it actually offered at the Mayo Clinic?
I came across this description:
DG HAL is a minimally invasive way to treat hemorrhoids. It works by using Doppler technology to identify the specific blood vessel causing the swelling and then tying it off.
The perks here are that you don't need special diets or medications. Post-op, patients report little to no pain or complications.

The biggest takeaway
The most important part is that after this surgery, the lining of the rectum stays its normal shape and size. This is vital for maintaining regular control, which isn't always the case with other surgical options.

Best!

Recovery is painful, though, I'll give you that..

Painful recovery? ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. 😲 My old man had that exact procedure done, and the guy couldn't sit down for two whole months. He actually ended up buying one of those donut pillows with the hole in the middle just to cope. 😂

Honestly, I’d exhaust every other alternative before jumping into that... and if you’re dead set on surgery, at least look for a method that doesn't leave you feeling like death afterward. We live in the modern age; there are way more sophisticated options than just simple banding now... things like cryotherapy or coagulation methods, for example. Maybe it’s best to scroll back and read all the previous posts first. People have managed their issues in so many ways—from tweaking their diet and lifestyle habits to using folk remedies or highly effective supplements. I personally know people with Grade IV issues who managed to sort themselves out without ever stepping foot in an OR... so, take it easy!

You might want to check out some private practices, like Dr. Fila’s, for instance... or go to a high-end pharmacy and talk to a pharmacist about stuff that actually works. Don't waste your time on cheap creams that barely touch the surface or suppositories that just mask the pain instead of fixing the actual problem...

Good luck!

So, I just slogged through all 18 pages of this thread... and I’m still looking for some guidance.
A few years back, I dealt with painful, bleeding hemorrhoids. I managed to get rid of them, and they haven't come back in that specific way, though I occasionally deal with some itching in the area.
A couple of days ago, I felt a lump. Naturally, I grabbed a mirror to investigate and found what looks like a small, skin-colored sac hanging from the rectum. It isn't inflamed, swollen, or painful, and my bowel movements are normal. I'm wondering if this is just another hemorrhoid—should I be applying a cream like Preparation H, or should I be trying to push it back in?🤷

I'd appreciate any insight someone could offer... thanx.🙏

Hey everyone...🙂
In one of the older threads, I remember reading that someone joined this forum specifically because of the "chemistry" (that's my little nickname for them—we've been together for quite a while now), and well, I suppose I’m in the same boat.
Basically, I’ve gone through almost all the past posts; I found myself in some of them, though not all. For a long time now, I've been dealing with a bit of a situation with my proctologist—which I would strongly suggest to anyone experiencing even the slightest discomfort back there: please, go see a doctor sooner rather than later. The chances of them actually helping you are much higher if you catch things early, and it gives you more time to realize the severity of the issue and try to manage it through diet and lifestyle changes before things escalate. I certainly wasn't that wise!!! 🙂
My experience so far has been a revolving door of creams, ointments, and suppositories... whether they are American, European, or global brands, they might put out the fire, but they don't actually solve the underlying problem. I eventually reached a point where I felt I HAD to undergo surgery because I end up being out of commission at least once a month for a few days at a time, and I just can't work like that—thankfully, I have a wonderful boss who understands. So, anyway... I've given myself another six months to see if I can make some headway through diet and physical activity.
I tried using Hemeroidin, though I'm honestly not sure if it made a difference since I was seeing a proctologist simultaneously, who prescribed ProctoC + Procto after a month. Long story short, things were better for about six months, and then the problem returned in all its former glory. 🙂I see that Hemeroidin keeps coming up in the discussions, so I guess I'll give it another shot.
I’m also going to try that herbal supplement that Joshua Kim2 mentioned.
I can't exactly change my job—eight hours at a computer plus an hour-long commute between work and home—but I am going to try to take care of my backside a bit more carefully than I have in the past. How that will actually pan out, I haven't the slightest clue, especially since I'm already quite thin.

All I know is that from everything I've heard from people who have gone through it, surgery is a total catastrophe, and perhaps worst of all, there's a significant chance the problem just comes right back.

So, listen, people: the moment you notice even the tiniest issue, go to the doctor immediately. Take care of your hygiene, drink PLENTY of fluids, move around more, and really watch what you eat.

Best to you all!🙂

Hey everyone, thought I’d jump in here... a new face on the forum and in this whole damn community with these hemorrhoids. :-) So, they showed up for the first time in my life about a month ago... I scoured the forums, took some advice (Factu, HEMOPROPIN...), and honestly, it worked! Thank God it passed! But what now? Do you guys have any recommendations? Should I keep applying HEMOPROPIN for a while longer, or just stop once the symptoms vanish? I still get a little itchiness every now and then, but the actual real issues are gone... Does anyone know what the actual root cause could be? I work an office job, so I'm sitting for about 7 hours a day, but I also hit the gym several times a week, and as far as diet goes, I guess everything except the junk stuff is fine... Can just sitting be the culprit? Or maybe some digestive tract issue? Stress? I've been overanalyzing my own situation and I can't make sense of it, but I definitely don't want them coming back... brrrrrrrr... Has anyone else dealt with them recurring? I see people mentioning it here... Could something like a "cold" be the trigger? For instance, I was out hiking for a few days and spent a lot of time sitting on cold, wet snow. I really don't want this to happen again, please help me out.

I dealt with some pretty intense digestive issues a long time ago, and naturally, I ended up with external hemorrhoids so severe that sitting, lying down, or even walking was basically impossible. It was brutal. Eventually, I started a routine where every single morning, without fail, I’d drink some warm mineral water—as warm as I could comfortably stand—like a glass of San Pellegrino. It really helped regulate my movements. I don't drink it constantly anymore, but the moment I feel things starting to slow down, I reach for it, and everything clears right up.
When I was pregnant, I didn't have any bowel issues at all, which was actually my biggest fear during that time. But by having about 8 to 12 ounces of warm mineral water every morning, I didn't experience any hemorrhoids either, which felt like a total miracle. This stuff is a lifesaver!

Stress can actually trigger this quite easily! I went through a massive turning point in my life about 15 years ago, and ever since then, I've struggled with constipation. Before that upheaval, I never had a single issue. And honestly, it was that constant hard stool that eventually led to me developing hemorrhoids. Looking back, my diet wasn't great and I was constantly on the move, which tells me that stress was the underlying culprit here. I don't deal with these problems much anymore, but whenever things get uncomfortable, just having some Donat solves everything! Give it a shot.

Thanks, Harold Palmer23. So, Donat plus trying to keep the stress levels down... I'm definitely going to give that a shot. I'm willing to try anything at this point... thx🙂🙂

Could there actually be some kind of link between Helicobacter pylori and my hemoglobin levels? I know I might just be overthinking this or asking something totally out of left field, but...?

Oh, sorry, I'm not quite following—what exactly do you mean by that? If you could clarify, maybe I'll be able to give you an answer.
As for Dasani—well, it definitely does the trick. But honestly, the warmer it is, the better it tastes! It can feel a bit unpleasant at first, but once you get used to it, drinking plain bottled water starts to feel pretty gross.😁!
I've tried various digestive tablets before, but they didn't really do much for me. Even using ointments helped a little during those first few applications, but then you just get used to them and they stop working. And herbal teas? For me, they actually seem to make things worse—it’s a nightmare.
Dasani is all-natural, and you won't find yourself getting "addicted" to it, but it can be incredibly helpful if you stay consistent and drink it regularly!

I’ve been taking some magnesium-based stuff like Donat for about two weeks now, and I’m finally hitting the bathroom every single day! Before that, I was pretty much stuck on a schedule of once every four or five days😢. Lately, though, I’ve been dealing with this constant burning sensation down there, which is honestly driving me crazy. I’ve been trying to stick with some Lawry's supplements to help out, but it’s hit or miss—some days feel fine, and other days are just rough... anyone else have any solid recommendations?

granitegull3 said:I'm with you there—long-term, changing your diet is always going to be the real answer. But when you're already dealing with certain issues, I guess the quickest way to get the body to actually respond to that shift is through "cellular nutrition." It’s just easier for the system to process—highly assimilative, if you will—and it gets those nutrients to your cells way faster.

Ugh, the Herbalife reps are driving me absolutely crazy—it feels like they're everywhere I turn lately. 😠

Just keep sticking with the Donat; things should stabilize for you eventually. Personally, I don't take it much anymore, just once in a while. Before that, I was using it for several years, but man, it really did the trick!
Have you thought about trying HEMOPROPIN ointment for the hemorrhoids? People say it works way better than Factu!

HELP!!
I woke up this morning and realized I’ve got a hemorrhoid popping up on my backside. I’ve been scrolling through some of these posts—not all of them, just a few pages here and there—and I have to say, I am pretty overwhelmed and confused. I had never dealt with anything like this until last night when I was hanging out with my brother and felt this slight stinging, aching sensation. I honestly don't know what to do now... like, what is the actual protocol here? Does this thing just stay there forever? Is this something that happens often? I have absolutely no clue how to handle this, and it's getting on my nerves quite a bit. I haven't been sick—not even a common cold, really—for about six years now. Please help!! Thanks in advance..😕

Is it actually possible for hemorrhoids to cause your bowel movements to:
- become more frequent and softer
- lead to unpleasant, sour breath

Or am I looking at symptoms of something else entirely?

I would suggest heading down to the pharmacy to pick up some ointment from a brand like Factu and applying that. Also, please, don't even think about using toilet paper anymore; I swear, I think it causes about 70% of these issues. For years, I've used nothing but wet wipes, and I haven't had a flare-up since. While things are flared up right now, maybe try using just plain water instead of wiping with anything, and once the irritation subsides, you can go back to the wet wipes.
As soon as I use any toilet paper, the stinging starts immediately.
