Hahaha, oh man, honestly, Krav Maga being famous for those groin strikes isn't exactly a step up from this stuff either... but hey, I guess I can just say goodbye to the idea entirely since I won't be able to train it in the Netherlands anytime soon anyway, lol.

It looks quite legitimate to me. Aside from the weapon work.🙄 Everything else seems fine. It reminds me a lot of Kempo, though. I trained Kempo for a long time, so I recognize some elements. The techniques seem solid. 🤷

😂
this is more comparable to that guy who just throws everything around him without even touching them. Real Krav Maga has nothing to do with this.

Look, I’m not even trying to lecture anyone here; I’m simply making an educated guess based on what I see.

The moves are decent enough, but let's be real—just like in almost any martial art, if you want this stuff to actually work, you need to be a master while the attacker is a complete amateur.

Basically, doing some half-hearted training two or three times a week—or worse, just taking a self-defense class—isn't going to do much for you when you're actually in trouble. If you want to feel even remotely secure, you need to sweat buckets and train consistently. At the end of the day, the specific style doesn't matter nearly as much as the person behind the strikes—the "fighter."

Personally, I stick to MMA because it covers every aspect of unarmed combat, plus it lets you pick whatever fighting style suits you best.

Hey everyone, does anyone here happen to know anything about the Goju Ryu karate club "Dr. Ante Starcevic"? I was wondering what their training sessions are actually like, what their schedule looks like, and if it might be possible to just drop by sometime to watch a class or even maybe jump in and try a session myself? If you have any info, feel free to shoot me a private message. Thanks so much!🙂

Is anyone training in New Orleans? I need some intel. What are the sessions actually like, and are people actually happy with the club?

Hey.

Some might remember me, some might not. Doesn't matter. In short, I’m looking to try my hand at this BV again this year, so I'm interested in hearing about anyone's experiences with Mr. Biljanic.

Honestly, I’ve read this entire thread, and it offers next to no concrete info. It’s mostly just useless rambling. (Almost makes me glad nothing has changed in these last four years.) 😁)

If you’ve got something negative to say, just hit me up in my DMs. I don't need a philosophical debate about ontology triggered by a traditional kidney punch.

Regarding the training itself, I'm familiar with the theoretical foundations of WC (I posted a thread a while back about "blitz defense," which, if I recall correctly, is just a variation of the EBMAS system), but I'll spare you the tangents.

Does anyone here offer any kind of sparring? I’m curious about how much focus there is on leg techniques—if they even incorporate them at all. Also, what’s the vibe like? Is the group mostly hobbyists or advanced practitioners? And why is the schedule only twice a week?

I don't want to hear "go look it up." That’s exactly why I’m asking. 🙂

If I could actually go out and check out every single one of those 34,554 BV clubs in the city, I wouldn't even be able to make a decision by the end of the year. 🤷

Thanks in advance!

If I were you, I’d just call Mr. Biljanić and ask him

I reached out to get some feedback from people with more experience, and I’ve already received a few messages. Thanks again for the help.

Setting other options aside for a moment, does the idea still hold that their BJJ program is the highest quality section at the YMCA? That was the consensus a few years back.

So, the choices are WT, TKD, BJJ, or Muay Thai. It doesn't matter to me which one I pick; my main priority is intensity. I should also mention that a large portion of the trainees only show up for physical conditioning and aren't particularly motivated.

I'm looking for your experiences with the YMCA. 🙂

Out of those listed, I've only attended WT so far. It was decent in terms of both technique and intensity, but personally, I don't think it's very useful unless you can attend sessions more frequently.

Regarding Muay Thai, I've heard the place gets crowded and there isn't even enough room to warm up because the gym is so small. There's certainly no ice packs available to soothe your bones after a grueling day of micro-fracturing them. 🤷

As for TKD, word is it's useless if you didn't start training as a kid, and it feels like the quality is diluted by the fitness crowd—like the whole group trying to convince the instructor they crushed their push-up sets.

I've heard BJJ is top-tier and the crew seems very serious, but I have a hunch it might not be for me. At 5'11" and thin, I'm automatically at a disadvantage whenever I need to execute a move, and I suspect nobody there weighs under 200 lbs.😕

Anyway, sorry for the long post. If I sound indecisive, it's likely because I'm still looking for housing in the city, so I'm interested in all the options.😛

MMA is for striking, BJJ is for rolling—or just go for both if you've got the drive. Forget the YMCA stuff, MMA is way better than Taekwondo. Weight doesn't even matter—you’ll be training with people your own size anyway, and you'll get stronger regardless. Plus, not everyone is some absolute beast ready to toss you around and eat you alive like I did to Sam Roberts.😛

Hey there!
I'm looking to get into some kind of martial art, just for fun and fitness. I want something that isn't really about throwing punches or taking hits, though. I'm more interested in stuff focused on defense, self-protection, blocking, and just dodging strikes... so what would you guys recommend? I was thinking maybe Aikido?...

JJ, BJJ, Judo, Krav Maga, Systema, or even shooting... 😎 there's plenty to choose from... 😁
