But I can't really get anything done without a referral from my doctor since he's a family friend, and I really don't want my mom finding out. Plus, honestly, I'm kind of embarrassed to go to him for a referral.
🙄 🙂

Once you take those results to the OB-GYN, they’ll know exactly which pills to prescribe. They'll just write you a quick prescription for them, which you'll have to pay for regardless of who writes it. 😬

😕 What kind of referral for a gynecologist from a GP?

2 Roger Foster3 - Every patient has both a primary care doctor and a gynecologist through their insurance. You basically need to register at a clinic within the local health system—maybe look through this thread for what other women have experienced with OB-GYNs. That specialist will be the one ordering your blood work and writing the prescriptions—your family doctor isn't really involved in that part—though it would be smart to mention you're taking medication, just in case there are any potential drug interactions.

Look, I’ve been thinking about this, and honestly... you don't actually need a formal referral just to go see a gynecologist. You can just book an appointment and go. But, if you're looking to get on birth control, you're gonna need that doctor's note from your primary care physician first so they can order the blood work... 🙂

So basically, I can just show up at a regular OB-GYN, wait in line, and they'll call me in... and that's it? Because honestly, I really don't want to tell my family doctor all this stuff. It's not even because I'm embarrassed about being sexually active, 😍 it's more that I know him personally, and since I'm still a minor, things feel awkward. 🙄 So, I mean, can I just show up with my insurance card, hand it over, and wait my turn?🙄

Look, it’s easy: you just head to the OB-GYN, knock on the nurse's door, and ask if they're taking new patients. If they say yes, they'll walk you through the rest. Simple as that.
But since you're a minor, they might pull the "we need a parent's consent" card before you can pick a doctor.
If you go to the pediatric clinic over on Main Street, they handle minors, but you'll definitely need a referral from your family doctor first.

Basically, you go to whichever OB-GYN you prefer, they give you the necessary paperwork to file with your insurance provider, and then they open your patient file.
Once they finish the exam—the Pap smear, the ultrasound, all that—they’ll hand over the referral for your blood tests.
My own doctor actually gives me a referral for blood work once a year just to stay on top of things.

I went out on my own for the very first time at sixteen, and not once did my parents even bother asking where I was.

Can anyone point me toward a decent gynecologist in the city? Ideally someone private who won't charge me an absolute fortune, or maybe a clinic where I don't need to jump through hoops with a referral first? Please! I am beyond ready to finally ditch the condoms once and for all.🙏

Does it seriously have to be a woman?

Yeah, honestly? I’d much prefer if she were a woman.

Check out the Nemetova Clinic. I actually see this young doctor there and honestly, she is just incredible... She talks to me like we're old friends, actually listens instead of rushing you out the door, and the whole vibe is night and day compared to those "standard" doctors you find elsewhere!!
Prices are pretty much what you'd expect for a private practice, but if you want the specific details on her, hit me up in a DM and we can chat more about it...👍

How much does this usually run? It's my first time looking into it because I’m thinking about starting some kind of oral contraceptive, and frankly, I don't have a clue about the costs, the whole procedure, or any of that! 😕

Nah, I'm not. I'm from this small town where there's just one private OB-GYN and one lady working out of a local clinic.

I feel the need to issue a formal retraction regarding Dr. Maja G. at the Harni Medical Clinic—whom, if you recall my previous posts, I had actually spoken highly of. To be clear: she is perfectly adequate if you are a picture of health and simply require an annual check-up to tick a box. However, if you are dealing with even minor complications—or more accurately, if you feel your actual life is at stake—run the other way. My primary care physician back home couldn't believe the results; apparently, the urine analysis didn't flag anything remotely serious, yet there was clearly an issue. For $200 the price they charge for a consultation, they won't even bother explaining the procedure over the phone. They just leave prescriptions for heavy-duty medications sitting at the front desk with a confused nurse—who then has the audacity to suggest you "just take everything nicely" and wait six weeks before you can even try to talk to someone about it 😕 Honestly, it feels like she should consider a career in veterinary medicine; explaining basic medical concepts seems to be an inhumanly taxing effort for her, which suggests she might not actually grasp them herself.
The bottom line? I won't be setting foot in Harni again. 😠 😠 😠

Basically, I'm done with the clinic in Hartford.😠 😠 😠

Man, I'm really sorry things went down that way for you, but I'm totally lost on that one part, could you please walk me through what you meant if you don't mind...

Indeed, I find myself quite eager for an explanation as well.

1. She treated me like I was completely brainless—she never once asked how I was doing or even bothered to look me in the eye. She just sits there, eyes glued to the computer screen. An entire exam lasts maybe two minutes, during which she stays mostly silent, and whenever I actually try to ask a question, she just shrugs her shoulders at me. Honestly, the woman clearly hasn't a clue what she's doing.
2. To make matters worse, she completely overlooked my terrible blood and urine results—she actually checked off the box for leukocytes when they were at 8!!! My primary care physician absolutely lost it when she saw that.
3. Every single time I tried to ask for clarification, she just brushed me off, telling me that everything was already written on those scraps of paper she dumped in front of me at the start, or that I should just go check their website.
4. Then there was the recent swab result, which was an absolute disaster. Instead of actually picking up the phone to discuss it with me, she just left some vague, half-baked prescription for the nurse. Naturally, I had to be the one to call them myself—they’re so cheap they won't even answer the phone properly, despite the fact that I needed urgent information. When I requested that my doctor call me back, she flatly refused, claiming "that isn't our practice" and insisting that "it's all on the paperwork." Typical.
5. They also never issue receipts for their services—someone really ought to report them to the IRS.

But I still don't quite get that comment about "veterinary medicine"?? 😕 😕

I guess she was treated more like an animal than a person. Like, maybe because she studied vet med or something? Did I hit the mark there?😍
