Not if you're staying within the free tier, obviously. And just so you know, it doesn't go through Visa.

He’s basically saying he won't touch those kinds of transactions, so he'll just decline yours...

Kevin Morris12 said:Once you’re up, they’ll send over a link for the Chase Bank app if you're using iOS, or the PayPal app if you're on Android. I’ve noticed some people are actually jumping the gun and registering before it’s officially their turn, and honestly, it seems to be working just fine—so if you're looking to get an account, why not give it a shot? The account itself doesn't cost a dime and covers several major currencies (though there isn't a local currency option available). You also get a free virtual card—which is a bit weird because the binlist identifies it as a Brazilian prepaid credit card, wtf?—plus the option to order a physical card for $5.99. Transfers to any other card follow the standard PayPal pricing at $1.50, while bank transfers are listed as "coming soon!" but are currently free. Topping up your balance is free, too, though you will need a valid ID to complete the registration process.

So, I just finished registering and started the identity verification process. Sent over my ID photos and a selfie video, and now it’s telling me the check could take up to three hours. Is that actually for real, or does it usually move faster? Also, I see the top-up limit is capped at $500 per year, but apparently, that goes up once you're verified. Anyone know how high that limit actually gets?

For some reason, their app-based ID verification isn't working with our driver's licenses. Just shoot them an email—there’s an option in the app to report a problem, so just click that and let them know you're stuck on the verification step. They usually get back to you within thirty minutes during business hours, though since it's likely after-hours now, you might not hear anything until tomorrow.

Once you get your account verified, they bump your limit up to $5,000. If you send over a recent utility bill, like from ConEd or PG&E, they'll increase it even further, but I haven't tried that myself so I'm not sure what the cap is. You can always do that later; for now, I'm sticking with my $5,000 limit.

You run into any issues with those Paysend virtual cards lately? I tried running a quick $1 test transfer via a payment link over to my PayPal, but it got shot down immediately. Apparently, it failed some address verification check—told me I needed to input a valid country and zip code...

I’ve managed to switch from Chime over to Western Union, but I haven't tried going back the other way yet. I used my Western Union virtual card at three different merchants where they didn't require an address, and everything went through without a hitch. It might be worth sending them an email to clarify exactly which billing address you should use during checkout; from what I can tell, their support team is actually quite friendly and responsive via email. I even reached out to ask about adding USD support for card-to-card transfers, and they mentioned they're planning to integrate it directly into the wallet to make the whole process seamless.

On a side note, isn't it interesting that they handle 3D Secure authentication through SMS rather than through an app?

Yeah, the transfer from Chime to Western Union actually went through, but now I'm totally stuck and can't reverse it 😠 I reached out to support, but they won't get back to me until tomorrow morning, so I figured I'd just ask around here instead. The Okta prompt popped up, so I saw the SMS verification clearly enough.
From what I can tell, the top-up feature is strictly for USD; everything else is just greyed out...

It’s pretty wild how the exchange rates in the Chase Total Checking app are actually decent, whereas if you use the old service, they absolutely rip you off—we're talking a spread of over 1%...
Plus, on that outdated platform, if you aren't swapping currencies, they hit you with a flat fee up to $100 and then jump to 1% after that. With the new setup, it stays a flat fee regardless...

Yeah, that’s a classic headache. Just shoot an email over to support at global-account@westernunion.com and you'll probably have to manually upload the photos...

One more thing. Every time I try to link my Bank of America Preferred or Visa Signature, I get this error message:

Can someone please explain why I should even bother with these apps instead of just sticking to my bank's mobile app?

My bank keeps things simple—all my accounts are linked in one spot, moving money between them is seamless and free, and the fees for sending payments to others are only about 1-$0.67. Honestly, it doesn't feel worth switching to some third-party service just because—what, maybe they don't support the specific business or person I need to pay? Not to mention the potential security gaps and lack of guarantees with those platforms...

Anyone?

It really depends on which platform you're looking at, but the standard perks usually include better exchange rates, zero fees for ATM withdrawals anywhere, and way more control over your card—like being able to freeze it instantly if you misplace it. You also get things like virtual cards, cards issued from different regions (handy for bypassing geo-blocks on certain services), and cheaper or even free wire transfers... The list goes on and on...

Honestly, I’m not even surprised. They’ve been having quite a few issues with card top-ups lately; even with my own cards, it often just shows an "X" at the end after adding them. It’s pretty obvious the whole system is still stuck in beta phase...

I think I'll pass for now and just wait.
It’s not like it's some massive deal.

I just went ahead and tested adding a Google Money Mastercard (an American credit card) to my account, and everything worked perfectly—it added without a hitch and even topped up on Western Union seamlessly... I guess if they're operating within the EEA, there shouldn't be any issues... 🤣

What's the deal with this Google Money thing? Is it even available here in the States?

Pretty sure the Venmo app advertises support for the EU, Russia, and Kazakhstan.
