Just set up PayPal, and they’re asking for a 50 dollar deposit for the card, but I’m not seeing any of that cash...

So, if I’m remembering this correctly, there's just a one-time setup fee for the card and then everything else is free on a monthly basis?

But yeah, you're right—it's a lot. That kind of pricing might fly in the US, but it's a bit harder to swallow here.

It’s a one-time thing. Even though the website and the app claim the membership fee for that essential card is just 25 bucks, when you actually go to checkout, it tries to pull 50... either it’s a glitch or there’s some hidden fee they aren't being upfront about. For cards issued in the EU, there's a currency conversion fee of 0.57 bucks plus another 1.5% (but if you're using a US card, it's free). They claim to support a ton of different currencies (including the old local stuff), but all I see in my app is USD, EUR, and a literal mountain of random crypto...

The fee schedule for American cards is actually pretty interesting. There are a ton of line items, most of which are just zeroed out. I bet other American card processors charge for all of that, so these guys probably just go with the "pay once and everything else is free" model...

Kevin Morris12 said:The issue is they restrict how you spend your balance—it's strictly limited to actual retail transactions, whether you're shopping online or walking into a store. You can't use their card to top up a Chime account or any other similar service; you'll get an instant notification in the app telling you that the transaction isn't allowed. At first, I thought it was just some glitch or a temporary block within the app, but then their customer support confirmed that this is actually intentional behavior.

The card is a Visa debit Prepaid (available both virtually and physically). The BIN and IBAN are based in Poland, though you share those identifiers with other users. As for currencies, you can choose from USD, EUR, GBP, CHF, and PLN.

By the way, has anyone here tried signing up for Expensify? They are incredibly popular in the States, and they've finally expanded into the European Union, having started shipping cards across the EU earlier this month. They even offer crypto options. Looking at their Twitter feed, it seems like Europeans are absolutely thrilled that they've finally arrived, even if the service isn't a carbon copy of what they offer back in the US...

Huh, according to their website, they say something else entirely:

Do I get a unique IBAN with DiPocket?
We provide unique IBANs for every customer for every currency of customer’s accounts.

It’s been quite a while since I last logged into this account. I finally decided to jump back in today to see if anything had changed, and it looks like they really have moved to those "unique routing numbers," but for some reason, it still isn't showing up under my name. 👎👎

Credentials:
Beneficiary name: DiPocket Limited - Client Funds
Beneficiary address: 911 Wierzbowa St - Warsaw - Poland
Beneficiary bank: Bank Pekao SA - 53/57 Grzybowska St - Warsaw - Poland
Routing number USD: PL81124XXXXXXXXX
BIC/SWIFT: PKOPPLPW

To make matters worse, I couldn't even get into my account at first. I managed to enter the wrong password three times and ended up getting locked out! The only thing I could do within the app was request a video call, and honestly, they called me through the app in about 20 seconds. It was a woman on the other end—I explained the situation, and she sent a temporary passcode to my phone via SMS. I remember their customer support being pretty solid when I first signed up, too; I ran into a few hiccups during registration, and they were incredibly fast at resolving everything.

Yeah, obviously because of legal restrictions they can't just open accounts under a client's name, so they came up with this little workaround where they just open a massive pile of accounts in their own names and then hand them out to clients one by one...

PayPal got back to me. Apparently, they’re dealing with some technical glitches regarding fund uploads to bank accounts and fintech apps. They claim they're working on a fix and will let me know once everything is back up and running.

Interesting marketing here, and it’s actually available in the US... though everything else about it is pretty mediocre.

Yeah, honestly, these fintech apps often slap you with currency conversion fees that are even more of a rip-off than what you'd get at a big bank like Chase.

What’s the deal with Newport for bill payments? They announced they were coming to the States nearly a year ago, but we haven't seen a thing. And all that hype about Open Banking—how banks would have to open up and fintechs would suddenly explode... yet here we are, and the only one that's even bothered to register with the Federal Reserve for payment initiation services is PayPal, and even then, they're just doing B2B stuff. Feels like a lot of noise for absolutely nothing...

I’m still waiting on Paul—or at least, I’m holding onto the naive hope that things will finally get moving. I reached out to them back in October, and they gave me some kind of line about everything being ready to go, but despite all that, we're still sitting here with nothing to show for it today. 🤷

The geniuses over at TW are actually tripping. Seriously, if you try to top up your borderless account using a bank transfer, they tell you to send the cash to some massive joint account using a specific reference code—which means your money just sits in limbo for days waiting to clear. It would be so much smarter to just point people toward their own individual routing number so the funds land in minutes... but hey, why make things easy?

Nah, you can only make payments through private checking or savings accounts.

Hmm, I haven't decided yet
Even if I did, I’d have to cancel my Chime premium membership. There's no point in paying for both.

it feels like things have finally settled into a routine, and honestly, I've basically reached "endgame" status since my specific spending habits are way more intense than the average person's out there. My go-to battle kit is pretty much a Chase Visa paired with a Wells Fargo Mastercard—that covers 99% of my life, really. Most of my daily transactions just fly through via Google Pay with the Visa or Mastercard, and then the Visa handles all my automatic top-ups without me thinking twice. But, you know, just in case a terminal decides to act up or if I find myself somewhere that hasn't quite caught up to contactless tech yet, I always keep both physical cards tucked away in my wallet just to be safe.

Anyone here actually know anything about PayPal?

Edit: My bad, just realized people have already been talking about this—going to go catch up now.
