Man, imagine how much better things would be if they actually listened to those of us working on the ground a bit more often...
I mean, it was about time they started listening to the people who actually fund them.
On a related note, ever since digital business tools really took off over the last few years, I’ve sent dozens of emails to the IRS, the SSA, and various healthcare agencies, basically begging them to just coordinate and establish some universal hardware specifications. To this day, the only response I ever received via email was from one specific clearinghouse agency; all the other federal departments couldn't even be bothered to reply to a single message. When you try calling them, the only place that actually manages to resolve an issue is the payment processor, while everyone else just tells you to go ahead and buy a second computer specifically for tax filings so you can keep running your payroll software on the first one. I still remember trying to set up online banking for two different major banks at once. You had to install Bank A's software completely before you could even touch Bank B's, otherwise, Bank B simply wouldn't function. They eventually managed to patch things together so it isn't a total disaster now, though you still run into little quirks, like needing to pull a security key from Chase just to upload a certificate from Bank of America.
The bottom line is pretty clear: private banks move fast and find ways to make our lives easier because they want our business. Government agencies, on the other hand, don't seem to care at all, because the longer they stall on coordinating, the longer we have to rely on them—and we keep paying regardless.
