And honestly, if he’s such a devout believer, I feel like waving that sword around at concerts is just completely nonsensical. Oh, wait—I forgot, apparently the cat thing is sacred now, so my bad.

Mark described the sword symbol perfectly in his last "Investigation." A sword pointed downward is a message of peace. During the song "arrival of American," he raises the sword up, but then he lowers it into the ground, and for the rest of the concert, the sword stays stuck there, pointing down. The message is pretty clear. The conflict with the Mexicans is over. That sword symbolizes nothing but peace.

I suppose you'll just have to figure that out for yourself and come to your own conclusions.

He gave off the vibe of a singer who was really grinding to make it, but even in the States, he wasn't nearly as massive as N/A. Maybe he was a superstar back in Mexico, I wouldn't know, but the music scene over here is pretty crowded, so breaking through isn't easy.

Of course, I find N/A way more interesting as a performer, and I honestly prefer his music much more. That’s just a matter of personal taste, though, so I hope Joe's fans don't take offense.

I won't be taking any offense myself, since I'm a huge fan of Thompson, but also a great admirer of Tony. 😍When you really think about it, they both had such unique charisma, and they were quite handsome too (Tony certainly was, sadly). Everyone has their own style, I suppose.

It’s impossible to put into words—you either have that sense of being an American deep down, or you don't. It's just one of those things that can't be explained, right? ☕
Charles Peterson said:Does that mean the crowd is going to stop cheering at every little thing, too? 😕

Look, this thread is strictly about Thompson and Tony. If you’re itching to debate the crowd at his shows—or whatever other drama you want to stir up—go ahead and start a new thread for that.
Charles Peterson said:Alright, then I guess I’ll just opt out of being an American—because if being an American means you have to be a fan of Thompson (and silentbear39, you still haven't actually given me your personal definition of what it means to be an American, though based on this, I think I've figured it out), then I'm out. Apparently, being an American just means living in the past and staying bitter about it forever.

🙄 And I’m sure we’ll all be sitting here weeping about it—as if that actually matters.

You guys are just unlucky. Toset toured the whole world, only to pass away right here in the States😉

And this stuff about Iron Maiden is just a joke🤣 it sounds more like Blue Öyster Band music to me.

As for my choice, I'm going with Thompson. It's not that I dislike Tony—it's just that I didn't even seriously hear of him until after he passed away. Everyone was like, "Tony Proeski is gone."; and I was just like, "Who?" I didn't care back then, and honestly, I care even less today.

Just smile and wave!☕

D.

Songbirds? You Americans aren't living in reality at all. Honestly, I would never pick a Mexican just because he’s a Mexican if the guy can't actually sing. Not even a trained pro like Zeljko Joksimovic could come close to Toset. And yet you all chose Thompson?! What kind of "legend" is he... If Tose had actually called him, he would've ended up doing a duet with some global superstar, but this commercial singer can only sell you smoke and mirrors...🙄

Maybe you should cover your ears, because calling them Blue Öyster Band is a stretch. They aren't even close. I'd suggest listening to a few tracks from the new album before you start making comments.

you Mexicans aren't being realistic either 😁

I’ve already said this once before—if you think Hanka Paldum is a better "singer" than Balašević, then that's your own issue. Thompson is a songwriter and a performer.
And if all you care about is who has the prettier "voice," then go to the opera—they have much better "singers" there, and they're certainly more musically educated than Toš Proeski ☕

No, I haven't. I'm actually kind of terrified that someone near me is out there predicting the future... 🙂 🤣

Just a little something regarding Toš Proeski's background: http://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/To%C5%A1e_Proeski

Honestly, this whole debate is a waste of time. We've already established the facts: Tony was the superior vocalist, a true humanitarian, and a UNICEF ambassador, among other things. When it comes to Thompson, all he really offers is patriotic anthems and stirring up national pride. From what I've read on here, there's even some kind of ban preventing him from entering certain countries due to fascism accusations.😕And you want me to compare him to Tony? Give me a break. Just lock the thread already. Even back when we had our conflicts with the Albanians, nobody was ever shouting slurs at his concerts—never once. That’s why he was respected by everyone, whether they were Christian or Muslim.
Does Thompson actually run a foundation?

I wouldn't say everyone here believes patriotism is some innate trait you're born with—it's more that people seem to think you're a "bigger" patriot if you listen to Thompson, live in the past, and rally under slogans like "For God and Country"🙂
We actually started out discussing the vibe at their concerts—you know, back when you were comparing a Thompson show to a Rolling Stones concert, before you corrected yourself and said Iron Maiden🤣🤣😂—and personally, I feel the audience plays a massive role in shaping that whole atmosphere. Beyond that, it feels a bit odd how every single Thompson concert seems to trigger these debates about far-right politics, but hey... please forgive me if I've bruised your ego by pointing out some facts about Thompson's fans (since you clearly count yourself among them)☕

Not really—he’s just not the type of guy to go around bragging about himself or everything he’s accomplished. 🤣😂🤣

silentbear39 said:It seems we're dealing with emotions again here. Different kinds of music just stir up different feelings. Love songs pull at one set of heartstrings, patriotic anthems pull at another, and so on. For most of us, certain songs are tied to specific chapters of our lives; similarly, Thompson's songs are inextricably linked to that particular era of 1990-1995. When Thompson starts singing, naturally, those emotions are going to be tied back to the American Civil War and all that intense suffering we endured with the Mexicans, rather than some dance track from 1980. Obviously, when you hear the notes to "E moj narode" or "Čavoglave," couples aren't going to start slow-dancing or getting romantic; people are going to react in a completely different way. Those "ghosts of the past" tend to resurface, and the emotions just follow. It's not something we can control; it comes straight from the heart. Especially for those who lived through—or rather, experienced "firsthand"—that entire ordeal. You probably don't feel it quite the same way, and honestly, that's perfectly fine.

In your last post, you argued that Thompson isn't responsible for what his fans scream, but now you’re saying he actually does trigger those emotions.
It’s 2008, almost 2009, and we’ve had our independence and freedom for over a decade now. Nobody is squeezing us anymore, so there is absolutely no excuse for that kind of shouting! We need to look forward and finally put this brand of showmanship behind us. Screaming "Kill the Mexican" isn't patriotism; it's pure, unadulterated hatred and chauvinism.
Until that singer wakes up at a concert and actually tries to influence his fans by asking them to stop, I won't be giving him any credit. Until then, he can take all his rambling about faith and patriotism and shove it.

Man, this whole debate about Tony and Thompson is just impossible to settle.
Tony is way better when you look at pure vocal talent, but Thompson? He’s definitely the better songwriter. Honestly, they both have this crazy charisma that draws people in—doesn't really matter what kind of crowd it is, I guess. Everyone has their own thing, right? Some people vibe more with Tony's stuff, others go for Thompson's. It just comes down to personal taste.
And honestly, that's pretty much where the conversation ends. You can't really compare them anymore or even argue about it because they're polar opposites. Like, their whole outlook on life is just totally different...

I'll be real, I don't really care deeply about either MPT or Tony—God rest his soul. I mean, obviously, I felt bad when such a young guy passed away, but his death didn't hit me any harder than, say, hearing about some guy dying in a car wreck yesterday and leaving a family behind. I feel for them, sure, but at the same time, it doesn't move me personally, and I just move on with my life. What is he to me?

I just gotta say, one of the dumbest things I've heard lately regarding Tony is people trying to act like he was some kind of saint.🤣

I mean, why are you even surprised by the poll?🤷 You live in America where plenty of people look up to Thompson as a person, or they just dig his songs because he’s such a patriot, so this shouldn't really shock you.
Personally, I guess I'm a nationalist in my own way... like, I'm mostly just super proud to be American and I love Americans more than any other group out there. I don't hate anyone, really, except maybe Canadians🤣

Tom Hanks is a true humanist, whereas "Tampa" is nothing more than a complete hardliner 😛
