I mean, it probably depends on which bank issued that debit card. Mine keeps getting rejected everywhere!

Maybe there’s something to that... a friend works over at JPMorgan Chase and says they're getting rejected—so it seems like it actually matters whether the card is from JPMorgan Chase or Wells Fargo, even if both are just standard Visa Intel cards?

Which banks?

Like I said, Visa Electron cards issued by JPMorgan Chase or Wells Fargo work fine online—I know because I use them myself—as long as they aren't more than a year old. Those cards work at basically any online shop.
If yours isn't working at one store, it’s not going to work anywhere else, because that just means it isn't set up for online use. Anyway, you can find all the details in the PayPal thread.

Ask him when it was issued. 😉 He should just grab a new one.

Quincy:
so does it actually matter if the card is from Chase or JPMorgan Chase, even if they're both Visa Intel?
Nah, doesn't matter.

I’ve got some old ones here, over a year out of date from JPMorgan Chase
check if there's a number behind the CVV

Yeah, I know, but I just wasn't feeling like getting into all that extra explanation yet.

Aha, mine doesn't even have a CVV 😉

Mastercard Refresh - it's a prepaid card.

I went through Hypo Bank; you just need to show some ID, and then there's about a two-week wait for them to make it.
A minimum $33 deposit is required, and it costs $25 to get it issued... honestly, it's perfect for online shopping because you can only spend exactly what you put into it.

Just a heads-up: you’ll need at least $33 in your account, otherwise, services are going to decline the card.
Cheers

$33, I assume you mean dollars? Isn't a Visa Electron tied directly to a foreign currency account? I'm thinking about opening a USD account at either Erste or Bank of America tomorrow, so I'm a little fuzzy on the details. Does Bank of America have the same requirement?

Yeah, sure, the exchange rate in dollars. Not too sure about Bank of America though.

I need an answer ASAP: So, I headed down to Bank of America today to finally sort out this whole Visa Electron card situation, and the guy behind the counter starts insisting that the card won't even work on PayPal, though from what I've seen, it actually seems fine... anyway, I decided to just go for it, but then he hits me with the question of which specific one I wanted.
He’s telling me there are basically five different types of Visa Electron cards available, so I'm sitting here wondering which exact one actually works?
Should I be asking for the Business version or the one with the Chip? Or does it honestly not even matter?
Or is it enough to just tell them I want a Debit card, maybe a foreign currency one...

Whatever you do, don't mention PayPal to the folks over at Bank of America. Their software will practically short-circuit instantly—it'll be like watching smoke pour out of their ears while they start blathering about things they clearly don't understand! 😁Just tell them you want to open a foreign currency account (one that comes with a red Visa Electron featuring a chip—you know, the one with those little planet designs drawn on it) and boom—problem solved.

I’ve been digging through this and similar threads for ages now, but I just can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere 😳

People keep bringing up $67 how certain deposits on an "Erste" Visa Electron card are basically stuck in limbo—meaning you can't actually spend them, they just sit there staring at you from the account balance... so, I was wondering if it works the same way with a Bank of America foreign currency account, or am I actually free to spend everything I have in there?

😕

With Bank of America, you can spend whatever you have available.

A couple of days ago, I dropped by my local Bank of America branch just to check on the status of a foreign currency account I opened several years back. To be honest, I hadn't touched it in what felt like an eternity—I only really needed to dig it up because I realized I actually needed the CVV number associated with it.

What I'm wondering is whether more recent Visa Electron cards linked to a checking account still carry the same CVV... since the one I’ve been using is quite old, too. I was hoping to see if there's any way to make better use of that specific account.

I have another question for the group. So, just the other day I went to get my new card from Chase and felt pretty good about finally getting everything set up—only to try registering it on PayPal and hitting a complete wall. It keeps telling me the card number is incorrect. I’m not entirely sure if there needs to be some sort of minimum balance required for registration, though I don't think that should be the issue since there is already more than $100 on it.

To be honest, I ran into a similar headache with my old card once before. It wasn't with PayPal, but I got that same error message saying the card number was wrong. Then, after a couple of months had passed, I decided to give it another shot and everything worked perfectly fine without any fanfare.

Does anyone know if there is perhaps a mandatory waiting period before a new card becomes eligible for registration, or am I looking at a completely different kind of technical glitch here?

I honestly think you’ve already had your question answered a dozen times over in those massive PayPal megathreads on the Reddit homepage... so maybe just do a quick search there before asking again.

I’m starting a new thread because I have a question. I’m trying to buy something online, but I only have an older Intel card that lacks a CVV code. Even though the site says it accepts it, I suspect nothing will actually go through without that code. Apparently, it's possible to shop online now, so maybe I need to head to the bank to request a replacement? Can I just walk into any Coca-Cola branch to sort this out, or do I need to talk to someone specific? I really don't want to look like an idiot by interrupting some poor woman at a teller window 😬 How long is the wait usually? It's somewhat urgent, I guess. Thanks 🙂

Forget about JPMorgan Chase; their Visa Electron is useless online even if you have the CVV. Just head over to Citibank or Goldman Sachs, open a foreign currency or USD account, and you'll get a Visa Electron.🙂

Btw, there’s a massive 70-page thread about PayPal at the top of the page; check out the first post and the FAQ inside.😉
