Which motherboard are we even looking at? Brand, model, what's the deal? 🙂

I mean, if he picked up a 5.1 channel speaker setup,
these days most of those things come with a remote included anyway.

It's a laptop, an Acer Emachines... can't find it in the settings, it worked fine on Windows XP.

Jamie Hughes6 said:Just one quick question—I picked up a 5.1 surround sound system, but I can't seem to find the settings to make it all work. Everything seems fine, but I'm only getting audio from two speakers and the subwoofer; the other three aren't doing anything.

Right-click the speaker icon in your system tray > Sounds > Playback. Select Speakers, then click Configure in the bottom left of that window. Choose 5.1 Surround and run the test.
You might need to mess around with the settings inside those windows a bit to get it right. 🙂

Sorry, but can you walk me through that again? Either I’m being a complete idiot or there's something seriously wrong with my week.😕 I've tried everything and I can't find those settings anywhere. Nothing.

Then you’ll need to install the actual audio drivers; right now, you’re probably just running on some generic ones. I guess you can just head to the motherboard manufacturer's website and find your specific model there.

Which specific Acer Emachines are you running? You might want to check the sticker on the bottom of the laptop to get the exact model number. 🙂

Seems like my Emachines G725 doesn't support 5.1 audio.
Looks like I just threw my money down the drain.😢
Or maybe there's some adapter you can plug into that speaker jack, then just hook up those three green, orange, and black cables.

Installed it again. Still doing the same thing.

Or maybe there’s some kind of adapter you can plug into that speaker jack, which then leads into those three colored cables—green, orange, and black. I guess. Maybe.

Wait, you actually bought a 5.1 system without checking if it only had a stereo output? I guess that's possible. 😬 So where exactly are you plugging all those cables in? Honestly, I can’t even remember the last time I saw a laptop that actually supported 5.1 surround sound. You could probably:

Maybe just buy an external sound card and plug everything into that.
Maybe buy a 3.5mm splitter, but I doubt it’ll actually work the way you want it to.

a) buy an external sound card and plug everything into that
b) grab a 3.5mm splitter, but it's gonna be total garbage and won't work right

dammit... so option A is better, which means it's also more expensive...

Just make sure you look for an external sound card that actually supports 5.1 surround 😬

So, yesterday my system screen went totally black, even though it’s usually blue. I ran a system update and now the screen is just... gone. Completely vanished. Tried to get it back, but no luck so far.
image

I tried refreshing it, same way I've always done it before.
image
I've tried every single combination you can think of—the green stuff in the photo—to bring it back, but nothing works. It's just stuck.

Right when it starts the refresh process, it hits this part (image 3) and then just throws an error at me.
image

Anyone know what's going on here? System Restore isn't going to help because the screen was already black before the update. If I roll it back, I'll just end up right back where I started with that black screen.
Is there some other way to fix this settings mess?
Everything else on the PC is running fine, everything works perfectly, it's just this one weird screen issue driving me crazy.

I'm 100% positive I ran the update. Before I even touched it, I tried refreshing the score and kept getting that same damn error. So, I figured fine, let's just do the update and try again... nope. Still nothing. It just keeps throwing that same error at me over and over.

It's like the Windows Media decoding tuning just hangs right when it tries to refresh.

Got two questions about Windows 7. If anyone knows the answers, I'd appreciate the help.🙂

1. My Windows experience index is sitting at 5.9. When I check the details, everything is around 7.5 except for the disk.😕
The disk my system is installed on is:
KINGSTON Solid State Drive 2.5" Serial ATA II-300 64 GB MLC

Dammit, why is it the slowest part of the system?😕
Isn't this disk supposed to be faster than a standard hard drive?🤷

2. I can't for the life of me get a Media server (Wild Media server), Windows Media Center, or any kind of Share working on my televisions.😕
It worked perfectly fine back on Windows XP.😢

I set up a shared folder and it shows up on other PCs on the network and even works on Popcorn media Player, but none of my TVs can see anything in Windows 7.😕

Could this be some kind of router issue?🤷

I'm using a Thomson TG782.

Maybe the problem is there, but it still baffles me—if that were the case, how does everything work fine on Popcorn?🤷
